Thanks for the revisit. Best 30 minutes I spent today.

One thing i do like about Corralium live, is like with all of their live stuff, guitars are panned hard right and left which makes it easier to dissect the madness.

Kudos to you, Mark, for picking out the individual band-members’ contributions from the maelstrom of noise that is Corallium.
Like you said, the production really doesn’t help the listener. It’s probably one of the reasons that Band Maid isn’t better known. Rick Beato said the same when he gave the Maids the cursory listen that he did.
I love this track, really I do, but there are songs which showcase the band-members with much more clarity. It seems you set yourself a Herculean task, conducting a guided tour of the stables despite the layers of auditory mud obstructing the listener’s appreciation. For the fans, definitely, rather than the casual listener.
(I’m surprised this track was picked for you. It seems more like a personal challenge rather than something which would assist newcomers to get a good appreciation of Band Maid.)
One thing this shows is that you don’t need to be afraid to go beyond the average “Wow, what a track!” There’s some good insight into music production and recording, and we’re here for it!

It's possible it's the lack of clarity that's made me enjoy this song more and more with more listens, as I picked up on new bits and pieces, after really straining to pick them out. I didn't love it at first, like it was just too overwhelming, but over time it's become my favorite. I think it's unmatched for them in terms of just how playful the writing is.
My hope for asking Mark to do this was to get the same sort of effect, of greater appreciation and enjoyment with each listen. If that happened, it wasn't obvious, and I think trying to put it all on one timeline like this kind of doomed conveying it well, if it were to happen.

Hope Dave's 'issue' has cleared up btw.

This was fun. From a number of interviews Kanami's process is to create the basic song on either piano and guitar, then she puts that into a program and adds parts for drums and bass, then sends that file to MISA. MISA in turn take what Kanami has created and makes changes to make it playable (Kanami has a tendency to write bass and drum parts that are unplayable) and sends that back to Kanami, who then sends to Akane, who makes is playable. When the song is mostly finishes, she sends it to Miku and Saiki for the lyrics. WHen it's finished, Saiki has the final say.

Hah, in all of the giant blurbs about band maid we've posted... nobody posted their official colors (yes, I'm serious, they each have a color associated with them). This is easiest to spot in the Unleash!!!!! video.
    The obvious 2 are
    Saiki (blue)
    Miku (red)
They have flowers of those colors in basically every video.
    The rest are
    Kanami (green)
    Akana (yellow)
    Misa (purple)
Now, I know that if you even knew the colors ahead of time you would have picked different ones because you are a chaos demon of entertainment. but it was fun to point out there are actual colors for each member.
I think Saiki would stab you for picking pink for her 😆

Miku actually probably is the strongest member, but Akane probably has the best cardio.

Wow, it's been a while....LOL Thought you might have forgotten about the Maids. Changes up all over, what I love about the Maids. Akane's double kicks, then Disco beat shows up in a few bar in songs...and then gone. Same like the vocals...rock, then a little pop, a little rap and back again. So much going on, yet, it fits so well. BTW...not that you would follow it, being the non-conformist that you are from time to time...LOL, but hey, that's what we like about your reactions and analysis. The Maids associate themselves to specific colors. You got Kanami right, with the green font and boarder. Saiki would be blue, like her rose. Miku is red, like her rose Misa is purple. And Akane is yellow. At the very least, it's a FYI... Anyway, glad to see you did something with Band-Maid again. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘

Thanks, Mark. This was better on second watch, when I was able to pay more attention.
I maintain, though, that it would help a lot to kind of sound out what you’re referring to, and going back to listen to it after priming us to hear it. Especially with this format, where we’re jumping backwards and forwards in time, it would help us keep our bearings.

One thing that sucks with modern rock is that theres very little budget given to a rock album anymore. And by very little i mean like maybe a third of the budget of an album 20-25 years ago. Its hard to find non-tone deaf engineers on that budget. Most engineers these days are CLUELESS about frequencies and equalization, so they resort to trying to fix everything with compression.

Isn't it funny that Kanami seems to be just noodling around on her guitar and that music comes out. Thank God, Miku is happy keeping the rhythm going in the song. Akane and MISA both seem to be messing around with the rhythm and beat. This sound sounds so chaotic but it's fun Saiki also keeps the melody going properly, while Kanami, MISA, Akane are playing in the sandbox.

Mark you're a Legend! that was great deep dive, I agree with the production issues about Miku's guitar being too low on the mix, but as you mentioned That's where MISA takes over with all the hard work she is putting. I also Love Saiki's melodies. Strange but nice letting the Guitar solo play through. Anyway Cheers! great job

First thought: Reservoir Dogs...NOBODY wants to be Mr Pink 🤣 Adding to what Glen Kelly said...Kanami writes the vocal melodies so I guess she's the wee EMO of the band. Also, in studio, she records the rhythm guitar parts using yer lassie Miku's guitar and amp...then teaches Miku to play it later. So studio time for Kanami is setting Miku's next lesson plan (if I remember right, she wrote instru No Holding Back as practice for Miku to prepare for playing Black Hole). Miku keeps busy with the lyric writing and then developing them and the harmonies with Saiki. All Maid''s input to finesse a track is why they all slap you in the face at some point in every song...superb. Question Mark: Is there anything in the maid's music or methods that might have some wee influence on yer own creations?

Honestly I doubt it. I’m not on the same technical level as them, so there’s no way I could even begin to sound like that. Plus I’m just typing drums in with my mouse lol

    • @greylocke100
      @greylocke100 Před 8 dny +3

DT covered about Don't Be Long, but Kanami actually owns one of Miku's Signature guitars. There is a photo in their practice studio where there are 3 Flappy Pigeon. Two on Miku's side and one on Kanami's side. And until Miku switched to a Line Six Helix Floor Multi-effect pedalboard, Kanami would just use Miku's pedal board and amp
