There is an intermediate which dates from WW1. They would wear plain khaki hose-tops with regular socks and boots, and would also wear puttees, which are just long stripes of khaki wool serge, which would cover the the boots above the ankle, and could be basically would up the calf to the height of hose, or just worn around the lower "cylindrical" part of the leg. You can find pictures of it online as a highland uniform WW1/WW2. All that said, that is also really a military thing, and field dress, not something would wear either formally or casually. It would be something you would wear if you were doing a historical impression.

I don't know if you guys have ever covered this topic but I've seen a few companies offering fleece kilts. How do you feel about that? Is it a good alternative to wool for someone on more of a budget?

      Good question...

Thanks for your question! There are certain fabrics that lend themselves to being made into a kilt and others that are "less suitable". The 2 types of fabric we (USA Kilts) use are wool and Poly Viscose (a polyester rayon blend). We have several kilt models to choose from with various price points from $100 up to $550. While a $100 PV kilt costs more than a flannel, acrylic or fleece kilt at $50 or $75, it's going to be something we're proud to put our name on.

I realize that diced hose tops do not have to color-coordinate with your kilt, but I still want to ask if you try to match your kilt or not?

That's personal preference. I (Rocky) don't wear diced hose, BUT if I were to wear them, for formal, I might get some that tone with my kilt. That being said, I don't think I would ever wear them.

@@USAKiltsOfficial I wear my kilt casual with Bellville (military) boots that are brown suede (my tartan is Lindsay), and I use Navy traditional garters. The reason I am thinking of using diced tops is because regular hose has been a nightmare to this point, wearing out in the foot too quickly to justify the cost and as far as I've seen, hose tops only come in diced. I guess Navy/Bottle Green is the way to go. If I do go with hose, could you recommend a hearty, comfortable hose that will stand up to boots? Thanks, Rocky, you helped me with my kilt purchase as well.
