  • I had a chance to ride a Yamaha TDM 850 for a few days. Here are my first impressions, along with a little bit of history on the bike, and how it foreshadowed a lot of the changes we've seen in the motorcycle market since it's release.

I have a 98 tdm , had it for 10 years , sounds awesome with black widow stainless exhaust, 26 years old now and faultless

Same, got Kerkers on mine. Does your system have oversize headers?

I have a 2007 TDM900 that came to me due to a good friend passing away unfortunately 😢. Absolutely great bike to ride! Has a OVER racing exhaust and sounds great. Handles great, enough power without trying to rip your arms off.

Got a 96 tdm 4tx (i was born in 97 😅), first bike! must say aftermarket exhausts without the cat, can be crazy loud! Eventually switched back to the originals. Keeping the bike alife and doing as much as possible myself in maintenance, good bike to learn repairs on. And as a dutchie at 1.96m im super comfortable on it. Nice vid!

The thing is with the TDM's is their ability to do big miles, tour, scratch, track days, commute, gravel and dirt roads and avoid shed time between services. They have their quirks but I've yet to find a bike which ticks the same boxes and won't cost a fortune to replace mine. Their appeal creeps up on you over time. And to be fair, that was an impressive looking back tyre all things considered, no doubt more sprot bike riders were going WTF with a TDM glued to them through the corners.

I have owned one of these for a few years. Very quiet with stock exhaust, you can get a 2-1 exhaust pretty cheap. I prefer twins over I4, more torque in lower register and no need to chase the high revs. Enough power that it doesn't feel slow but not so powrful that you have to be gentle with the throttle.

The scenery is really nice, I was geeking out, but is this Japan it feels like it. So chill and nice environment.

Later model (270 crank) TDMs are magnificent. Best bike I ever owned.

Bro's like: ye this is not that high of a motorcycle... I'm 6 foot 5...
and I'm like: BRO WTF!? like honestly you could be riding a giraffe and by that you'd get similar experience to regular person riding a pony...
ya think it's allright for someone who's 5'11 tho? wondering if I should buy TDM myself... I need something to daily and I'd like something that's comfy

Hahahaha, thanks for the comment man, you gave me a good laugh. I guess I meant that even though it looks tall, it’s really not. My main bike is a Tracer 900 and the TDM felt much lower than that, even though they both look tall from a distance. 5’11 would have ZERO problem flatfooting a TDM. I think it’d probably be perfect for someone your height actually. Lots of legroom, big comfy seat, and at your height I think the windscreen would be perfect.
Anyway, I’m off to ride a giraffe!

Nice bike for scooting around town but never gonna replace the sound of an inline 4

Agreed! Parallel twins are never going to sound great, unless you’ve got a thing for the 360 degree crank of old British bikes.

@@Mason_van_Bike idk, the 270 crank twins and the 285 twins sound pretty dang awesome to me. 180 twins sound the most boring.
