I repot most of my new plants. I always find plugs and/or root rot. So they all get a shower and a repot immediately. I know most people say you should let your plants acclimatise first, but it works for me, and I figure if the plant doesn't survive, it probably wasn't very healthy to begin with. I'm still a beginner though, so I see still have lots to learn! I recently bought an Alocasia Amazonica, and I was very much out of my comfort zone, so I didn't repot. Yesterday I noticed some mushy roots coming out of the pot, so I decided to take a look. I found a fabric plug! So while I hone my skills, I'll continue to repot right after purchase.
I wouldnt unless you think the plant has problems. I still have a snake plant in the same grow pot for like 4 years lol. Only time I have plants die is when I repot them that's why most experts tell you never repot a plant unless you are literally watering it every day or two and you have no choice and to disturb the root ball as little as possible. Most CZcamsrs I notice do the opposite. Lol
I literally just walked out of the store with an Osaka White Aglaonema. Perfect timing
you just LITERALLLLY saved my plant. As it was I saved her from drowning at Lowe's and had just repotted her but didn't want to mess with her roots bc you know, she just drowned. I wassss gonna leave her alone to take her apart after she recovered but there were 2!!! tiny pots in there, one root ball had rotted off already. Poor ladies are now in separate and bigger containers and are no longer stuck in those tiny cages, omg. Thank you thank you for front loading the video with the PSA!!!

Drea, I recently contacted Costa Farms to ask if they used any kind of plastic pot or netting on their plants as I had just purchased a Silver Dragon grown by them.
This is the response that I got: "Only Aglaonema are grown with plastic net pots. There may be a the remains of the biodegradable mesh plug (which we don't recommend removing, based on our experience). In our fields now is the next generation of this plug so in the future by the time plants are available in stores or online only a shadow of the plug will remain."
So buyer beware, and thank you for warning us in your video!

@AlohaPlantLife I wonder if maybe it promotes early growth. I have a 5-year-old Silver Bay that's huge and bushy I've never removed them. I know when you get from costa Farms you don't even have to fertilize that bad boy for a year. Lol. there was no shadow of a plug it literally felt like pots inside the soil lol. I freaked out when I first had to add soil to the pot and noticed it and felt it but then I thought maybe it's there for a reason.
Agree with you completely on light.Their growth definetely goes to another level whenever they get good light.
U should cut off the leggy stem and put it back into soil. In less than a month new shoots start popping up from the mother plant. Leggy stem usually roots in 6-8 wks. So you will have a nice bushy pot in sometime.
I have a Chinese Silver Bay that's about 4 ft tall and wide and filled up in a shady spot in the east facing window past 4 years. some of the easiest plants to take care of in my opinion.

I just purchased a 4in aglaonema from an Etsy shop and watched your video before she got here. Once she arrived I messaged the seller and asked if she used plastic cages/fabric nets, she said no, phew! I tried to feel for one, just to be safe but felt nothing, and then my dog knocked it over : ( But no cage! lolol At least I know for sure now !
You are so right. I have removed these things from plant roots not just aglaonemas. I call it choking the poor plant. I had to cut them off.
Just what I needed to hear! My son gave me 4 of his Agloenema plants as he was having trouble with them,I took them out of very chunky mix soil and found one the whole root system was covered In mealy bugs,never seen that before,soaked the roots in alcohol/water mix and replaced into better soil. Hope it will save them. This video was so helpful..

Thanks for the video since I was thinking about keeping this species. I find those plastic 'cages' very odd in houseplants. I only thought they were used in aquatic plants for aquariums. They are sold in those pots to allow water flow to get to the roots and are easy to pop off most of the time. Hiding them in the soil around the root ball of houseplants is sinister.
Sinister is the perfect word for it💚
In the trade it makes the popping of multiple baby plants into a container easier and keeps the plants upright in order present them well. They can be taken off if your careful and cut the cup off without hurting the roots. People should be informed about them.

I have a Silver Bay and red Siam. I left the cups in mine and keep it in a shady spot and they've been thriving for 5 years. Repotted it once sfter a year. but I totally agree with you on the watering you can't let them completely dry out on you you will lose some leaves. major tip I have that is mine are constantly flowering and I'm always cutting them off cuz they just zap energy from the rest of the plant. They are easy plants to take care of I barely fertilize them and they come back from the neglect.
Aglonemas are highly underrated. They are easy to care for and have beautiful foliage…with the exception of the chocolate one. That one is finicky.
For whatever it’s worth, I just repotted an Aglaonema from Costa farms. No plastic cases and a stunning root system overtaking the pot :)
I just bought one from Walmart (Costa Farms) so doing research. I just checked for that plastic cage and didn't find out either. Maybe it's only certain growers doing it. Costa seems to be doing things right.
Although, the decorative pot the original one is set into does not have drainage holes. Mine has moist soil and a few leaves have brown mushy tips. I'm assuming this is from over watering/ no drainage. I drilled large holes into the decorative pot and discovered the black one it's actual in does have holes. I'm hoping letting it dry out a bit before watering will stop the damage 😅 🤞
Is there anything like an "all-purpose soli" like you have with flour, one-size fits all?
Informative as always, thank you. IMO, growers/retailers should be required to disclose: (1) that the plant's root system is enclosed and/or restricted by mesh or plastic or whatever; and (2) suggestions for how to address it going forward. I understand why its done, but for folks new to the houseplant game it smells a lot like planned obsolescence.

Great video, but I am curious as to why you didn't mention Aglaonemas guttating? Maybe it isn't a common occurrence, but I have had it happen with both my Aglaonema Maria, and my Aglaonema Silver Bay. I now make it a point to water both of them in the morning, and that seems to have taken care of it. I have both of them roughly 3 feet back from an east facing window that has a sheer curtain over it, and they love it! As far as cages/plant plugs go, I recently ordered 4 plants from a seller on Etsy, and 2 of the 4 had fabric plugs on them. Thankfully, 3 of the 4 were 'bare root' plants, so I simply removed the fabric before potting them up. I will have to check the Platinum Mist Peace Lily when it's time to repot her.
Honestly, I didn’t bring up guttation because I’ve never had that issue on any of the Aglaonema that I’ve owned
@@AlohaPlantLife Ah, that's a good reason! LOL They don't drip water like your Alocasia's, but I have found a number of water drops on both of them and one of the leaves on my Maria was wet on the edge, then turned yellow.
Hi there, I just brought home a couple of Calathea and I felt in the soil and they have the fabric plugs you mentioned. I'm torn between repotting and removing the fabric, and giving them time to settle in. I just got them over the long weekend. What do you suggest? Thanks.
I also brought home an Aglaonema Silver Bay this weekend. There were 3 plants in cages all in a 6 inch pot. I grabbed her up just to get those awful things off her. Anyways she's repotted and has those awful things off. I also bought an A. something maddonna about a month ago and there wasn't a cage on her. I repotted her because she was totally root bound in her nursery pot.
Okay sorry for the ramble. I know it's a Calathea question in an Aglaonema video, but I would greatly appreciate your advice.

Thank you so much for another great informative video! I just bought a 6" Siam Aurora from Lowes, and Im pretty sure theres three cages in there. I'll be repotting him asap with help from my husband since repotting plants terrifies me, haha.
But quick question, it came in a self watering planter. Costa Farms, "wick and grow planter. After removing the cages, should I put it back in that planter? I ask because I purchased a small 4" pink colored Aglaonema, and it ended up dropping every leaf and dying. I don't think I overwatered, but I cant be too sure since it may have gotten too chilly in shipping.
Id hate to lose this new guy, so I'm wondering if I should just stick with the self waterimg planter it came in. Some of the roots are super close to the surface of the soil actually, so it might be better to only put 2 of the clumps back into the planter, and put the 3rd clump in another pot by itself. Can you please offer some advice 🙏🏼

No, I never take my plants outside. It gets way too hot hot here.
Question. Do you need to seal the ends of the cuts when you are cutting apart the rhizomes? Like with cinnamon or let them dry out slightly so that they scab over?
Honestly, just depends on how thick it is. If it’s like less than a quarter inch thick I usually don’t do anything to it. But anything bigger I usually let it sit out until the end has calloused over.💚
If I'm using a moisture meter, what should it read?
I don’t like to use moisture meters, as they are unreliable for multiple reasons, but the maker of your moisture meter should’ve included a list of plants and what they should read on the meter when you bought it. If not, you should be able to find that information on their website.
Do you ph your watering before feeding them? Thanks My 1st indoor plant!
I had never ph tested my water until a month ago and I only did it then because I was experimenting with leca which requires you to lay a bit more attention to ph. Your water is probably fine as is. Are you on city water or well water?

Did you say you water every other week?
No, I don’t water the plant every other week. I water it when the soil dries out about 3/4 of the way which depending on the time of year how long that takes can vary. When I was talking about fertilization, I was saying that sometimes in the summer when plants are growing more rapidly, I will fertilize basically twice a month versus just once a month. I think in the video I phrased it as once every two weeks so that’s probably what you’re asking about.

The reason I wondered is I did hear a CZcamsr say she waters her plants on the first and fifteenth of the month so I thought maybe you had said that in another video. I did understand how you water aglaonema . I’m calling the nursery I bought mine from where they grow the plants they sell and see if they use plastic net cages. I surely don’t want to deal with that! I just bought 4 plants there and they all look good but I’m sure if they have plastic bottoms they won’t be happy for long. Thanks for mentioning it. Hi, I'm in Delhi, India and just got home a pink one. It's flowering and I wish to study the process so can i leave the buds to flower or even fruit or is it a big No? Also, about the toxicity. I see you and many others handle it with bare hands so gloves aren't necessary are they? My plant is not very big. Thank you for sharing the detailed information.
You can leave the flowers if you want but just know you might see increased leaf loss of older leaves depending on how many flowers there are. They’re toxic if consumed but just touching them isn’t a problem.

I cut at least (2) of the stalk things off…..was that a bad move?
My plant continues to lose leaves, after turning totally YELLOW 😔
I probably need to repot, hopefully in the same pot….after checking the roots, looking for that cage thing, also checking for bugs/gnats, etc!!!

I guess with the machines/robots packing the seedlings it’s more easier to use plugs,here in Australia ours are made out of mesh,which still doesn’t let the roots out and takes a long time to break down! Can’t stand them..😫
To make it take less time to get the plants to size and to market because that equals more money more quickly
How do u manage low humidity areas. Should we just spray some water on leaves every week once ?
I don’t. I stopped using humidifiers almost two years ago and I haven’t had a problem with any of my plants
@@AlohaPlantLife we get certainly very low humidity and extreme dry weather so asked for alternative
@@-ssch Sorry, thought you were just literally asking me what I do 🤦♀️. Humidifiers would be your best option or if you have a greenhouse cabinet you can transfer any plants that seem to be sensitive to the humidity change into there.
Mine is VERY leggy. What do I do. I'm talking about 1 1/2 feet, and leaning over the edge of the pot. This plant is at least 12 years old.

Clearly off topic, but do you have croton care guide? I don't think I've seen one from you or the other planty people who I love and trust! I got a weirdo croton its like red and black leaves and small but the new leaves are green (apparently normal) but I donnno when or if it changes color or what makes it do that. It is a freak and only came home because mom likes it LOL
No I haven’t created one yet, but the leaves are constantly changing in terms of color on them. Stay on top of preventative pest care with that one though. They are HUGE spider mite magnets. They also don’t particularly like to be moved and will quite literally throw leaves at you if you move them around too much. The one I used to have threw like 8 leaves at me the one time I repotted it.
@@AlohaPlantLife it appeared to have had its leaf tossing tantrum on its way to the store as it's got its bottom leaves then several empty leaf spots and since getting it 3 new leaves 🤣 I think it's happy where it is. It's on top of the cat condo (she only uses the bottom level), with a bunch of other plants. My mom has those little halo grow lights sticking out of her plants and they actually seem to work! IMO it's the most confused looking plant ever but who am I to judge... It probably sees me and wonders why I'm almost always in jammies 🤣🤷🏼♀️

YES i had an aglaonema for two years and decided to take off the cage and it died.
The awful plastic plugs are still coming in aglionima. I’m a manager in the garden center at a big chain store and the next time costa has people
In store, I’m going to ask about them and see what they say. I try to save them when I see them but if something is distressed we clearance or toss and it makes me so sad.
It’s abhorrent and I do not understand why. The peat fabric or whatever they are, are bad enough. Why. Just why? It makes absolutely no sense. They never go away!
