London Grammar's Hannah Reid on sexism in the music industry

  • It's the hit album which almost never happened. Hannah Reid says years of misogyny in a male dominated industry almost drove her to quit music for good. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But now her band London Grammar are back at the top of the charts with their new album Californian Soil.
A record which Reid says has been inspired by those very experiences - She's been talking to our reporter Anja Popp.

Any musician listening to Hannahs melodies, the way she surprises you, couldn't doubt her ear or her musicianship.
Even after I've listened to a LG song 20 times, I can't replicate the vocal melody exactly, because its complicated and original. It's not very predictable. That's the sign of creativity and musicianship.

It is a sad reflection on the music industry that having a beautiful woman in the band makes the music more marketable, but then they think that that is all Hannah is in the band for. Beautiful music.

Idk why you can't simply do both. I mean, anyone with eyes in their head can see that, yes, she's gorgeous, but anyone with functioning ears can also hear that she's got an amazing voice and is a fantastic singer and songwriter. It's like some people need a person to be one thing and one thing only; their brains cannot fathom the possibility that a pretty girl can also be talented and skilled.
Also, not to dismiss misoginy in the business, but some of this might also be related to dumb attitudes among people in the scene that singers aren't "real musicians". The same thing is often said about drummers and it is equally as stupid in that case. There's just a whole lot of gatekeeping among musicians and even music fans over who is "real" and who isn't and it is really small-minded and tiring.

Unfortunate she has been treated poorly and doubts herself. She is incredibly talented and hard working. Being treated poorly can lead to a cycle of being doubtful which other people feed off of and doubt you because of it even more. Hope she can learn to feel differently to how she deserves to feel. It is other people who should learn to accommodate her beauty and give her respect and privacy. I was always worried she would go off on her own because she is so good. Hope LG sticks together for a long time.

Well she's right about one thing, women do need to stand up for themselves and act more like men if they expect to be heard or taken seriously. I've never ever had a problem getting what I want because I've always been a tomboy and learned to be assertive quite early on. Men always listen to me, the problem I have is with women who are sadly only competitive with other women and keep us down. If you speak up, men will hear you. Women will try to find a way to shut you down.

Punk actively changed this for a while when we had incredible and unusual female artists like Ari Up, Siouxsie, Poly styrene, Lene lovich, Nina Hagen, Annie Lennox etc etc. Too many of today's female artists rely on auto-tuned vocals and overtly sexual appearance, and the music isn't even good lol! Because actually what's hateful is the global issue of male violence against women. That's actual hate. People disagreeing with your views is not hate. She's no more objectified than any of the boy bands that appeal to hormonal teen girls. She wears jeans and a tshirt, but I notice she still make an effort with her appearance. She recognises that her image is as much part of the music "product" as her voice and persona.

@@cscscsc When they talk about racism in 2010 or later they really mean personal bias (preference). The KKK hasn't been around in about 50 years and when it was (as with all racist institutions) it was nearly 100% democrat. The conservative right has always been anti slavery and in fact were the backbone of the underground railroad in the 1800s.
Enough with the history lesson. If you want to find racism today, look no further than the party who talks about race with every thought that spews forth. The cultural left is making life miserable for black in the US because it helps them at the ballot box. (fear sells). If they left got there way, blacks would be pampered and given top jobs and allowed to pass with bad scores and who loses? Do you want an equity hire for a boss? It would be a disaster. Don't be disappointed, because it's not true. There is no normalisation of violence, and certainly not against women. Only young people say and think things like this. I was born in the early 60's, and I have seen the progress during my lifetime. Violence is part of human nature, but a lot of us learns to deal with that better and better. If you live in a world where you are surrounded by violent people, you hang with the wrong crowd. There are enough people who try to treat eachother like human beings, no matter their gender.

As a harpist I see how people react to a harp and I see a lot of similarities with the way some people tend to treat London Grammar & Hannah Reid at first.
Many people who first see a grand harp, expect that it is like a well-crafted piece of decoration that it will be a boring to listen to. That is until they hear the sound of it, which catches them by surprise and forces them to listen. Later during a piece when more of the versatility of the instrument is showcased they discover that they just heard a tiny bit of the full potential of the instrument and start wondering how they could have overlooked such a ‘heavenly’ sound for so long.

As a female lead of a band, and very much the representative face of that band, you should not desexualise yourself. You’re a talented vocalist/musician/front person. Your unquestionable female sexuality is a quality and attribute to be proud of. If fellow musicians and professionals working in that field appear dismissive of you, I don’t think that necessarily reflects their greater attention to your male counterparts, I think it signifies their lack of confidence in accepting an attractive, talented, intelligent female they may just regard as more than their equal, which is why they feel more comfortable with your male colleagues.
I certainly appreciate you as a female, for your fenininity, and talents as a vocalist and musician and all that you contribute to the bands success and our pleasure and enjoyment.
