How to Make Belizean Meat Pies | Flaky Pie Crust

  • Meat pies are delicacy made in Belize that are eaten for Breakfast, lunch and dinner. The dish uses ingredients already in your pantry and fridge. Many cultures make this dish in some variation, but Belizeans make it in a cup cake tray with ground beef.
    Meat filling
    2 lb. ground beef
    1 sm. onion (diced)
    3 T. cilantro
    2 Habanero peppers
    2 tsp. salt
    2 tsp. black pepper
    3 T. all purpose flour
    Dough
    4 c. all purpose flour
    3/4 c. butter (softened)
    3/4 c. shortening
    1 tsp. salt ( if butter is Un-salted)
    1 c. ice water

      That's true and interestingly there are a few Commonwealth countries that count meat pies as part of their national cuisine such as Australia and New Zealand.

      A reply to Shawn smith think about it’s true if you go out to California were you find a lot of belizeans you could easily mistake them for Guyanese.

      The Bare Pantry Show yes it’s true you guys even refer to the indigenous people of Belize the way we do as Amerindians there is really very little difference between our cultures .

      @@TheBarePantryShow yes, very similar to Guyanese beef patties. Lots of Guyanese in Belize. My high school friend Samuel Sukhnandan, was a principal of a Christian HS in Belize. Sadly, he padded away in 2015.

    I've tried several different meat pies so far and I havent sound exactly what I remember. We use to buy these in Belize growing up. I'm sure everyone makes them different so I may never find exactly the flavor I remember. But hey. I'm having fun with all these different flavors. Will be trying yours next.

    Hi, just making a little correction with the tamales. Wrapping with the leaves and foil, you did it rongside. the leaves go on top of the foil, the foil is to prevent it from running out or use it when thear is not enof leaves

      This is not tamales. If you're talking about a very old video with tamales, watch the newer ones. We correct the problem. I leave my mistakes in because I want you to know that I don't know everything.

    If you used a round pastry after you laid the pastry and squished it down just get a pastry cutter a little bigger then your pie cups and that should be a lot quicker again, good work lovely video.

    I love your first video and I mastered it at first site. My family enjoys my meat pies and says they are better than Dario's.... I blush when they say that. This new video will make it more easier for me, since I take long doing d single ones. One thing I want to know how can I not make my meat dry I want it thick n watery, but must times its OK.     Maybe use the bigger cup to cut the edges off on the muffin tin? Kind of like you do for making the lids.

    I tried making this and it was all good until I made the dough 😞 it didn’t come out nice and stretchy, I think I added too much butter or shortening, I wish you had the exact measurements written down. Also, I feel like it wasn’t enough flour

      It's so that the crust becomes golden color. If you don't put it, it will be pale, but cooked.

    Why don't you use it to open your own pie shop I mean you would make some money with it. Its nice of you to let people use your recipe to open up their own shop with it that is kind of you but I think you should use it for your own shop. I would love to find a shop that makes these pies. I went to the casa de fruta renaissance faire and they were so good. I had the cottage pie with steak potatoes onions and carrots and they were the bomb. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
