- From the Illinois Channel archives, We take a tour of New Salem Illinois, the reconstructed town of the 1830s, where Abraham Lincoln spent 7 years that set him on course to the White House. The town, about 30 minutes northwest of Springfield, showcases life in Illinois from the 1830s
oh, this makes me nostalgic. When I was in middle school and high school, I spent my summers at their summer camp (and later became a volunteer interpreter). Wearing 3 layers of heavy period-correct clothes does get pretty hot, but it's so fun if you're into history. I usually interpreted at the Berry-Lincoln stores, the cooper's shop, or the Sam Hill house, although I did enjoy working in the blacksmith shop or cooking in the tavern. There were some great folks who worked there, I loved coming back for the Candlelight walk because you'd meat volunteers who came for other seasons when you weren't there often.
Well worth a visit.

I grew up near Decatur and my family visited New Salem at least once a year. Dad took home movies, and Rutledge Tavern was always one of our favorite places. If I lived closer, I'd love to help cook or sit with the lady and quilt with her. Thanks so much for putting together a great video. It brought back wonderful memories.
I went to this place when I was a kid with our school.
So cool. Just amazing. I WILL BE GOING BACK..
Great video 👍
Thank you for watching!
