K-Ross, thanks suggesting Band-Maid to Toni. Toni, I'm a 75 year old geezers who has seen some of the greatest artists and bands in rock history. While I'm not a musician, I have been to a lot of concerts and also did stagehand work for several rock concerts. Band-Maid has restored by love and belief in the future of rock with their music. The are a genre-defying group because they incorporate so many different "genres" in their music The more you listen to their music, the more you will see the individual and collective talent of Band-Maid.

    Band Maid is:
    MIKU (mee-koo)
Rhythm guitar, backing vocals, writes the lyrics. The band’s founder.
    KANAMI (kah-nah-mee)
Lead guitar, writes and arranges the music. She is a riff making machine. “Mincho”
    MISA (mee-sah)
Bass. She’s special and the band knows it, they write songs to show her off. “The Barefoot Assassin”
    AKANE (ah-kah-neh)
Drums. You can set your watch to her consistent driving beat. Happiest drummer on planet Earth.
    “The Gorilla”
    SAIKI (sigh-kee)
Lead vocals. Striking presence, she can command a room.
    She’s the Team Mom.

Welcome to Band-Maid Toni! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog mayhem to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!

Welcome to the BandMaid experience. The greatest proper rock and roll band of the 21st century. Here's some opinions and facts:
•Bass solos are more likely to happen than not. There's a bass solo in their first video!
•Guitar solos are shorter, far shorter than you would like them to be
•Unless you are superhuman, you will not/ can not be able to pick up everything they're doing to make that song great on the first listen.
•Genre? Genres?? We don' need no stinkin" genre!
•You like a hard rocking crazy fast tune? Well how about it done as a slower acoustic version? They do that.
    •April Fools Day 2019
As a joke they recorded a redo of Secret my Lips with traditional instruments and with lyrics in a Kyoto dialect. MV is stunningly beautiful.
•The linchpin member of the band gets the least notice/praise. The Mighty Miku Kobato founder/original lead singer steps back to make way for a new more hard rock vocalist. They want her to hold a guitar so she does and learns to play on the fly, performing all the while she's learning. So the person who willed the band into existence, who is the primary lyricist, the only member who sings and plays an instrument most of the time gets the least comments from reactors. Oh yeah she has her own signature model guitar from Zematis.
•10 plus years with the same line up. Think about that.
•More hooks, riffs and motifs in many songs than most bands have on an album. Check it out. No hyperbole.
•Use of puns, wordplay using homophones between Japanese and English are not the exception. They are typical of Kobato's lyrics.
•Despite the fact that their LIVE videos are superior to the official studio MV"s the latter are excellent. Funny, graphic, innovative and stunningly beautiful works of art describe what you get with BandMaid's official MV's.
•As close to the Beatles in terms of unique persona of the members as any group since the Monkees. MISA is quiet and drinks. Akane is happy and eats, Miku is klutzy and CUTE, Kanami is an airhead who crushes on Saiki and Saiki was the Ice Queen. But the Ice Queen has thoroughly thawed. See Yokohama's Endless Story! Their image is carefully crafted or spontaneous or both.
•Many songs have catch phrases or singalong sections to engage the audience. Many songs are in English and Japanese. Most songs are full of joy as well.
•They're having a ball. They enjoy performing. They enjoy the fans. They enjoy each other.
•Make no mistake, this is not a regular band.

Great reaction and welcome to Band-Maid. Shoutout to K-Ross...spreading the word on the Maids and helping them on their quest for World Domination. Band-Maid's portfolio is deep and diverse. Continue with the Maids and enjoy the journey. As for suggestions, "Hate?" from their 10th Anniversary Tour Finale at Yokohama Arena is another great OLV. "From Now On" OMV is an awesome instrumental which showcases the talent of the musicians you were already picking up on. "Daydreaming" a genius rock ballad and my favorite song. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘

A quick (and tongue-in-cheek) lesson in grammar. Whenever you might find yourself saying, "even the bassist," replace "even" with "especially!" The bassist MISA is arguably Band-Maid's #1 point of appeal, at least onstage (the Pigeon wins the day offstage, and onstage during MC breaks)!
    Band-Maid
Saiki (the Ice Queen) - Main Vocalist
Miku (the Little Pigeon) - founder, rhythm guitar, second lead and backing vocals, main lyricist, 810-year-old Pigeon
Kanami (Mincho, Kanamincho) - Lead Guitar, main composer
    MISA (the Barefoot Assassin)- Bass
    Akane (the Gorilla) - Drums

The song "Domination" describes their plans for world domination.
By the way, their world domination means that everyone in the world knows about BAND-MAID.
That's why the lyrics "Hello, Hello" are included.

Welcome, Toni. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 200 million views just on their official YT channel, plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Hate?, Shambles, Influencer, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Bestie, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): czcams.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/video.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. czcams.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYUJI concerts:
 2023 Yokohama 10th Year Anniversary Concert “Endless Story” czcams.com/video/Za1y-RRVd70/video.html
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” czcams.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/video.html

 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: czcams.com/video/DgxU-MVjta0/video.html
     See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: czcams.com/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/video.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, live streams, CD, DVD/BD & merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 30 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! I've never really dived properly into BAND-MAID but tbh this is convincing me I need to sit down with their discography. Unfortunately it means I can't really say much about them, but since I know of them because they're from the same agency as my favourite idol group PASSPO☆ I'm afraid I'm going to have to hijack this comment now to recommend them. PASSPO☆ are much more an idol group than a band, but they're produced and backed up by a number of Japanese rock and metal artists. Their gimmick like how BAND-MAID have the maid cafe thing is that they're flight attendants (their costumes reflect this, but also they hold live concerts called ‘flights’ attended by ‘passengers’ holding ‘boarding passes’, or tickets, etc.). I should probably use the past tense as they have disbanded but in my heart they are eternal. If you're interested I'd recommend the songs 'Natsuzora HANABI', 'WING' and 'Himawari' to start.

The origin story: Miku Kobato, rhythm guitarist/backing vocalist (red flower), was an ex-idol (Lil'Cumin) who had worked in maid cafes. She was signed with the Platinum Passport agency. She proposed to management a hard rock band with a maid-look, she liked the contrast ("gap") between the subservient maid-look and the hard rock music she wanted to play. As @anoriori has noted they already had a themed group in PASSPO and they liked the idea. They advertised for musicians, but Miku, being rather driven, went looking on her own. She found Kanami on-line. Kanami was a singer/songwriter posting videos of her music. Kanami was interested and suggested Akane as the drummer. They had done gigs together. Akane in turn suggested a classmate from music school, MISA, for bass. So in 2013 the band started with those 4. Miku decided though they needed a vocalist with a more "rock" voice so they recruited Saiki who was also signed with Platinum. So later in 2013 they became a band of 5. An alternate version of the story is management wanted another vocalist, but I am skeptical because Miku's voice was perfectly suitable for the pop rock management originally had them recording. Management did want one of the singers to hold a guitar for just for the look. So Miku took it up and actually learned to play guitar. So Kobato is the band-founder, backing and sometimes lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, chief lyricist, and main spokesperson. Recently Saiki has written the lyrics for some of the songs and has taken up some of the front-person duties. Ohrenje's bios are definitely worth checking out.

Welcome to the World of the MAIDIACS! Where Bass, drums and guitar solos roam free with the voices of angles over a 10+ year catalogue of songs. Where women are hard rocking and oozing with talent.
Fans of BAND MAID include: Herman Li (Dragon Force) - czcams.com/video/u3O4KW5mHVE/video.html
Interviewer - What’s the meaning of the name “BAND MAID”?
Miku: I used to work at a maid cafe, and I thought “I want a band!” So it became BAND-MAID - maids in a band!
Interviewer: Maid outfits aren’t exactly rock ‘n’ roll. What is your ultimate heavy metal costume?
MIKU “Now Band-Maid’s outfits are part of rock n roll, so we pick these!”
Interviewer: Why should people listen to Band-Maid?
MIKU - “We’re not a pop idol group! Don’t judge us on how we look. We want to blow you away with our heavy rock sound.”
MIKU “We want a big gap between how we look and how we perform in order to be unique,”.
Interviewer - How did BAND-MAID come together? Did any of you know each other before joining the band? MIKU found KANAMI on CZcams video. Then asked KANAMI to join the band, and then KANAMI brought her friend, the drummer AKANE ...... Then, AKANE brought her friend, the bassist MISA. So the instrumental performers were all gathered through connections between musicians. After that, MIKU decided that she was not a strong enough vocalist for the band. So MIKU went looking for a singer and found SAIKI.
KANAMI writes the music and brings that to MSA and AKANE who then refine the music together.
MIKU writes the lyrics to the music and SAIKI helps to refine them. In some instances, HATE? for example, SAIKI wrote the song on her own.
Bottom line - The band works together as a unit and all members get credit. No ego's in this band after 10+ years.

Nobody engages their audience like Band-Maid. Their live show combines their high level of musicianship with their engaging humor and the fact that they are happily sharing that they are living their rock dreams. They've been playing together for over ten years and have become as friends and family to one another.
Rhythm guitarist, backing vocalist *Miku Kobato* is the band's founder, who pitched the idea of an impossibly hard rocking maid band to the Platinum Passport talent agency. She was a pop singer from a failed idol trio who was paying the rent by working in a Maid Café. After getting greenlit she then started recruiting band members. Miku writes much of Band-Maid's lyrics, which can be much more cerebral than you might expect from a pop rock band. She is an 810 year old pigeon with the mind of a middle aged businessman who ends many of her sentences with the word: "Po!"
Miku found *Kanami Tono* online doing guitar covers. Kanami had played classical piano since she had been a toddler and taught herself guitar in high school so she could look 'cool' to the other girls. She was studying business and economics in college, but with the idea that knowledge of those fields would help her singer, songwriter career. Kanami is the musical genius that leads Band-Maid in composing their music, occasionally sings back-up, and is one of PRS guitars featured artists. Kanami taught Miku how to play guitar. Kanamincho is a great teacher and Miku has become an excellent guitarist.
After Miku recruited her, Kanami called her drummer friend *Akane Hirose* and asked her to audtion for the band. Nicknamed "Gorilla", Akane is an absolute monster on the drums, capable of over 220 BPM on double bass pedals and the Queen of Fills. She's always in the pocket and has the dynamic spot on at all times; one of the most melodic drummers you'll ever hear.
After agreeing to join, Akane called her college schoolmate Misa and asked her to audition to be Band-Maid's bass player. Misa didn't really like the maid costume idea and had had a bad experience in a previous all female band, but her current band had just broken up and she liked palying with Akane and Akane had told her she knew the lead guitar (and liked her) so she agreed to audition. Misa likes to drink and showed up hungover for the audition, but she's such a great bass player that it didn't matter. Misa is a magician on the bass: she can slap, pick, do finger style, and she has this trick for palming her pick effortlessly, so she can swap style of play instantly.
This all happened in a matter of days. So Band-Maid is this strange combination of a nearly organic put-together band. As they began rehearsing and doing small gigs, Miku realized that her vocals weren't strong enough to match the power trio she had put together. As a band they decided to audition for a new vocalist. When they heard *Saiki Atsumi's* voice they fell in love with her. Saiki now writes song lyrics, sometimes in collaboration with Miku, but often on her own. She has learned keyboards since joining and a little guitar, too.

Thanks to K-Ross for making the insightful recommendation to you to listen to Band-Maid! Great reaction, Toni, I loved how you noted the amazing Band-Maid energy exchange. Being there (I've seen them live, once), is amazing. Also I love how you got the real meaning of the music (underneath the surface meaning, which is that they are... successfully to date... taking over the world). Subbed for your insightful nature.
I'm really glad you're going to be looking into them more, I think you'll love everything they do. I hope you eventually adopt the title of Madiac like all of us in the comments.
If you're unaware, Hanbie is opening on tour for Jinjer coming up in the next few months! Not coming anywhere near me, unfortunately.

Thanks for reacting to the greatest hard rock band in the world! The Maidiacs will be out in force to give you all the info on the Maids, but I just have to say that I love each of these ladies. I became a fan of the music, songwriting, and incredible talent. As I learned more about them and I soon realized that they're just amazing people who love their fans and each other. They're also very funny and humble. I can't say if I love Saiki (first vocalist), Miku (second vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and founder), Akane (drummer and huge eater), Misa (bassist), or Kanami ( lead guitarist, main composter, and musical genius) more (it's Akane but don't tell the others), because they're all unbelievable. I recommend anything they've ever done.

    Introducing The Band...
Misa [mee-sah] (Barefoot Assassin) - Bass Guitar
Her nickname comes from an interview where the host was saying that she was not wearing a maid outfit and Miku spoke up for her stating that it was an assassin maid outfit, along with the fact that Misa goes barefoot on stage.
Miku [mee-kuu] (Small Pigeon) - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Lyricist, Band Founder
Her nickname comes from her chosen last name Kobato, which literally means small pigeon.
    Akane [aah-kah-neh] (Gorilla) - Drums
Her nickname comes partially from her love of eating bananas. She almost always snacks on one during their long okyu-ji (servings, concerts) which routinely last well over 2 hours.
Saiki [sigh-kee] (Sai-Chan or Ice Queen) - Lead Vocals
Fans called her the Ice Queen early on because she was very stoic and showed little emotion. She has evolved to be quite expressive now. The band just call her Sai-Chan.
Kanami [kah-nah-mee] (Mincho or Princess) - Lead Guitar, Songwriter
Fans called her Princess because of her infatuation with Saiki. When she introduces herself onstage she says "Please call me Mincho". (meen-cho)
Some song suggestions for you are Moratorium, No God, Rinne, Onset, From Now On, Without Holding Back, About Us, Play, Why Why Why, Clang, Endless Story, and both versions (live and video) of Don't You Tell Me. They have a catalog of over one hundred great songs. If you are not fond of one then choose another because it will be much different than the one before it and the next one to follow. Have fun with it!

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. Poker shark and horse racing fanatic. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed. Definitely eccentric, possibly insane.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors. A sweet, motherly woman who turns into a beast when you hand her a guitar.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Completely unflappable. Frequently snacks between songs. Has been known to sign her banana peels and throw them to the audience.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. Regards her band mates, especially Kanami and Miku, with bemused exasperation. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

The "problem" with Band-Maid is that their catalog is huge, and although they basically play a mix of pop/punk rock, throughout their ten-year career they have played and composed songs that sound very different from each other.🤔
These would be my official MV recommendations: "YOLO", "Alone", "The Non Fiction Days" and "Daydreaming"... and live, I would recommend the usual suspects: "Real Existence" and "Hate?". 🙂
