After Nintendo and Square went their separate ways due to the N64 not using CDs, Nintendo still wanted to make a sequel to SMRPG so they found an internal studio willing to make it, known in Japan for making the Fire Emblem games but not really all that well known worldwide. That'd be Intelligent Systems, who would begin development on Super Mario RPG 2, which would eventually evolve into Paper Mario. On the M&L side of things, a lot of people involved in the development of the original SMRPG (including the director and composer) left Square to form their own company, Alphadream. They made their own JP-exclusive game Tomato Adventure just to kinda get their bearings and have *something* in their company portfolio before approaching Nintendo about another Mario RPG. Normally such a new, small studio would be lucky to get some smaller obscure property, much less the primary mascot Mario himself, but given so many of the people there had worked on SMRPG Nintendo figured it was a safe bet. So really it's all down to interpretation. Paper Mario (N64) is the literal evolution of what was SMRPG 2, hell it could be argued it *IS* SMRPG 2, but Mario & Luigi was worked on by a lot of the same people as the original SMRPG, whereas Paper Mario was the product of an unrelated studio known for their turn-based strategy games. It really all comes down to what you interpret as being the more important factor: the intent behind the original project (PM), or the talent behind the project (M&L)

I never played the original game. When I first entered the forest in this remake and heard the music, I put down the controller and spent a few minutes just listening to it. This song has such a magical and mysterious feeling to it that I absolutely love.

i can't even BEGIN to describe the pure euphoria i felt entering the Forest Maze for the first time and hearing this. even coming back to this i'm tearing up from just how good listening to this track feels. bravo, Shimomura. bravo.
I ain't gonna lie, hearing these themes remastered by Yoko Shimomura makes me as happy as David Wise coming back to compose for Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. I absolutely love some of the extra little musical flairs she's added like at 0:36 and 1:06.
it is worth noting that yoko had composed every mario & luigi game and co-composed mario + rabbids sparks of hope between the original SMRPG and the remake. she never left :)
