    • @chasewilson3693
      @chasewilson3693 Před 8 lety +43

      +neos1234125 because she comes with the assertion that this is a male only problem and "human women" qualifies as an expert on the human anatomy. both male and females are prone to this myth and no being a "human women" does not make you an expert, obviously the information is correct because they researched but so was every adam ruins everything video but he brought in experts to prove his point.

    • @shamrocklass
      @shamrocklass Před 8 lety +24

      I totally agree. Emily did her research and knows her stuff, so what if not every women is an expert on female human anatomy. I saw it as a bit of a joke. everything else in the video was educational and funny.

    • @chasewilson3693
      @chasewilson3693 Před 8 lety +26

      Cait Kay because the joke makes the assertion that women don't need experts to prove anything about the female body or anatomy, but men do. its a double standard that is only worse because the "stawmen" Adam and the other guy go "i feel bad" because they were supposed to "believe" she was an expert automatically because she was a women with no other reason given. hell it is actually kind of funny how these stawmen are written.
      despite adam's past history in the "i ruin everything"series in this episode he becomes a idiotic, uninterested (in female issues), dude bro who only wants to play video games and sports bruh instead of listening to this women talk about women stuff.
      then she makes the claim that virginity tests are assault, which they are not. they are wrong and flawed but far from sexual assault. and then there is the claim that virginity was "created" to control women, which it may or may not have been, but the video acts like its meaning has not changed in the thousands of years since its creation. its more an insult to men now thrown at each other by other men now and that is whats important..
      she was right....to some extent. some the studies she used are statistically flawed, make untrue assertions based of less than stellar data and are biased as all hell. but that does not make her an expert who has spent 4+ years studying the human anatomy.
      its clear this was written by a feminist because there are so many unproven assertions and accusations (against men), that women are equally at fault for. it taints what should be interesting into something akin to propaganda....like everything interesting that feminism touches.

But there are also ones that can be helpful or inconsequential. Both lack of wisdom teeth and hymen do not create any evolutionary disadvantage, so they are being passed on.

    The concept of virginity as a means to control women has always been a fascinating subject to me. It isn't some thing physical which leaves physical evidence behind, it is merely a lack of sexual experience. It does not exist physically, it was created by human society as a means to control female sexuality. Creating imaginary physical evidence, such as the hymen, to try and back up their arguments.
    And this is shown in how virginity is viewed in our culture:
    If a woman is a virgin, then she is pure and unsoiled.
    If a man is a virgin, then he is a loser and not considered an adult yet by his peers.
    And of course if men loose their virginity then he is praised, if the woman does then she is becomes impure, "used goods" if you will. Luckily, this view is slowly changing in Western society but the underlying is still there. "Whore" is still a popular insult for a sexually active woman. But virginity was always a means to control young sexuality so ingrained in our culture.

A girl is seen as pure/innocent, but it doesn't matter if she is a virgin or not. It matters if a man is a virgin, cuz society. Don't see how a womans sexuality is controlled, she can do whatever, but a man is judged for being a virgin.

    warning...I'm about to get a little graphic. I knew this when I was in high school. Why because part of my hymen was surgically removed! Let's call it the most embarrassing night of my high school life. I lived with my grandma who was against tampons, but she left for the night so I popped on a tampon for the first time. 2 hours later, I'm paranoid it's ready to come out and so I try and try and try. It won't come out. I try to relax and still won't come out. My grandma comes home. I'm still trying. After an hour, my grandma is concerned and so I have to tell her. Next thing you know I'm at the hospital explaining to nurses and doctors. Ends up my hymen was not a balloon arch but more like a really thick donut. Tampon went in, tampon expanded, and couldn't come out. Out come surgical instruments, bye hymen. It was so thick doctor told me I would have likely never been able to have sex if it wasn't surgically removed. Fun stuff...

But since everything was so dry it was stuck and the cotton gave a burning sensation when I tried. I was pretty horrified and had no idea what to do, since it was only partially in, but hurt to move either way. Eventually my mom got worried and came to check on me (I was in the bathroom panicking for a while...) and told me to hop in the shower to hopefully get it wet enough to slide out without pain. I did eventually but it honestly scarred me for life, I used pads from then on and never looked back. I started using a cup a CUP-le (ha!) years ago and it honestly changed my life when on my period..despite the insertion factor, it's so so much better than tampons

      And even paperwork that comes with tampons specifies that you can urinate while you have a tampon inserted, like WTF people don't actually know that urine doesn't come from the same place as menstrual blood.

    I think people hate to hear this because it makes us feel bad about our early sexual experiences. For example, my boyfriend's ex was a virgin the first time they had sex and she bled a lot and was in a lot of pain. He justified this to himself as an unpleasantness that just had to be gotten through because he thought her hymen had to be broken and that it was supposed to hurt. So finding out that hymens don't really work like that made him feel bad that he had hurt her so much when it wasn't necessary. So yeah, I totally understand why this news is a hard pill to swallow for a lot of people. We just weren't given enough sex ed and it's not our faults... Are there really people so delusional that think entire concepts are created with the only purpose to be mean to women? Is it really their victim complex so out of control?
    Yes, of course the concept is wrong and full of misconceptions from darker times that should be cleared up by now if people in general wouldn't feel repulsed by the mere idea of talking about sex or how sexual organs work (both men's and women's) but that doesn't mean there is an evil being called society that wakes up every morning with the sole purpose of being mean to women, it is a process, not a deliberate action

      +92brunod I believe Emily was pointing more towards how virginity is handled in countries where women are still considered property. She specifically says that there are "virginity tests" that hurt women. Virginity is a made up term by humans, and it may cause for men to be made fun of a little, but it genuinely can destroy a woman's life. A lot of places, if she has a damaged hymen she can't get a job and can't get a husband (er, be sold by her parents to a man), so her literal only option is prostitution. And these countries think they are absolutely just, because a woman who has been used before is worthless and won't amount to anything except petty prostitution. She is not fit to be a mother, she is not fit to be a wife. At no point in society that I am aware of has a man been affected by his virginity like this. Even in first world countries women are commonly viewed as less, or as whores, for having sex a lot, even though there is literally no difference between a woman who has had safe and enjoyable sex and a virgin biologically; I can cite that argument from jack darrell's comment above mine.

    • @92brunod
      @92brunod Před 8 lety +19

      Well you could believe all you want but there is absolutely nothing said on this video to base that she meant any of that with the phrase "virginity is something we made up to be mean to women" which is what I criticised. All the other stuff you said was already mentioned in the video and, though I agree, it's totally irrelevant to the content of my comment, maybe you didn't understand what I said because your entire comment is completely unrelated to my point.
      PS: "Virginity is a made up term by humans" Every single word and term was made up by humans, that's how language works

    • @Paladora
      @Paladora Před 8 lety +35

      `That's exactly what she meant, she even specifically stated that virginity is used against women in several countries. Name one country where a man being a virgin drastically effects his chances of getting a job and I'll agree that her comment was out of place. Just because we live in a country where we only get made fun of for it doesn't mean that women aren't beaten, killed, or otherwise devastated over having sex. The concept of virginity hurts women, it does not hurt men. Nobody would describe a young animal as a virgin, it's just a stupid idea of classification that can be used for control.

      To be fair people I met who know the most about female bodies in real life were men. I legit met virgins who didn't realize they get "moist" from foreplay and that is good way to make sex better for both parties involved. Like not even shitting you one asked me once "how could you tell if she was not into it and just faking it?" I went well for starters it would be less moist, she tried to counter with "what if they peed?" I went yeah there is difference in the two.. Same girl at 19 told me she never wanted to have sex and it was scary and sounded too painful at 28 admits in her marriage she is the one who gets punished from with holding sex as she wants it more then her husband does, and admits she can't go 3 days with out it, with out getting seriously pissed off at her husband.

  • @hankdumb
    @hankdumb Před 8 lety +173

    Okay... I just felt like throwing my two cents in on the comment everyone's losing their minds over: that virginity was created to be mean to women. Partly true. However, the reason we thought what we thought about the hymen is because sex-ed is less about educating and more about scaring. to put it simply, it wasn't made up to be mean, it was made up to scare. Girls are told the hymen mumbo jumbo in an attempt to scare them from having sex too early. and yes, there are similar tactics for boys. because spreading fear is easier than wisdom.

    • @cfmorrow1
      @cfmorrow1 Před 8 lety +11

      +hank412 It's to stop them from having sex with anyone before they're married, that's it. The idea was if your hymen wasn't intact then you weren't a virgin, therefore you weren't pure. Therefore you might be pregnant and the child would not be your husbands (they had little understanding of how pregnancy worked back then. They basically thought women were flower pots and men the planters. The female egg wasn't discovered until last century). Also, I hate to say it but age wasn't a problem when this was invented. Girls have been getting married off and having sex waaay before their sexual maturity level. In fact, it's still happening in certain parts of the world. Age or maturity doesn't factor into the virginity myth it is a way of controlling female sexuality. Saying it's being "mean" to women like they say in the video is seriously white washing the actual issue.

    • @Aviavi-fv5op
      @Aviavi-fv5op Před 8 lety +8

      +hank412 Just to add my two cents, it was made to see if a woman hadn't been claimed by another man, since marriages made alliances and tied families, and why women were put in this situation is because men were off fighting wars and doing other dangerous activities. Why that happened was because let's say women and men fought alongside each other back then and I had a tribe of 2k people, I lose half my men, they can still reproduce and the next generation will be fine, but let's say I lost half of my women, there's not going to be as many children so everyone'll fight each other and chaos will happen because not everyone will have a wife.

    "Virginity was invented to make women feel bad" I have somewhat of a gripe with this since 'virgin' is typically more of an insult used against males. So it works the other way around and I don't want to downplay women's issues, but at least virginity isn't just used to shame women.

      +Victor Ohrwurm Virginity is only really used to shame men in the modern western world. Historically and in some modern cultures (as the video points out), virginity really only mattered when it came to women, and there were and are actual laws that regulated female virginity in a way that, as far as I know, has never been applied to men.
      Being made fun of sucks. Being stoned to death because your hymen ripped is incomparable.

      +Victor Ohrwurm I think it most definitely can be equally used to shame both women and men, just in different ways. Men are shamed for being virgins, women are shamed for not being virgins.The problem is the same, the way the issues play out is different, and in the end the overall side effect is the same: both groups are shamed for doing what they want to do with their bodies.

      +Victor Ohrwurm You get that when she said "being mean" she meant what some women have to go through if they're supposedly not virgins (the stuff she said a minute earlier)? And yeah- now it's used as an insult against both men and women, but I don't think it's what she meant.

      I agree that the repercussion for women not being virgins is *much* harsher than the insult men get for being virgins. However, in modern western culture (especially in Europe, US still being very religious and conservative) I think that while still in a worse way, women do get shamed less for not being virgins than men for being one. Shaming men for being virgins is 'normal' while shaming women for not being virgins (which isn't quite the same as slut shaming) is disgusting to as good as everyone.

      +Victor Ohrwurm Bro, you're male.. you don't know what girls talk about at all, don't talk like women are never harassed about being a virgin. When I was growing up, by middle school people would make fun of you for being a virgin, they said they could tell by the way you walk and act. It's bullshit that our society is like that... maybe that's why you see so many young girls pregnant. Girls do get raging hormones, but it's far more controllable than a man's, and women are pressured into having sex all the time, ESPECIALLY virgins.
