    The fact that you feel the need to justify baking three cookies is ridiculous - people need to calm down and focus on their own lives instead of trying to be an armchair expert in someone else's.
    I loved this house tour! It's so hard finding pieces secondhand that all go together, but everything in your home feels warm, cosy, and cohesive. Congratulations!

    A small house provides big space for togetherness. Less walls and less rooms means less separation… more collective energy gathers amongst those who are spending time together in the same room. Like you, Immy, we have a cozy common room that has many huge windows. My partner and I chill out there every day. We love seeing the mountain views, the wild bird feeding stations, and the wildlife that ambles through our back yard. I recall you saying a few months ago (before you moved overseas) that you don’t think you’re very good at ‘putting things together’. Well, I think you’ve done a fabulous job and I see charm, coziness, and comfort in every room. Thanks for this welcoming house tour. I loved it and I look forward to seeing how this space changes and evolves with seasons. Lastly… I agree with your husband… big wooden cutting boards for the win!!🔪 💦🌎Ⓜary💕🏠

    About the christmas tree; I once bought a potted christmas tree with the same intention as you to use it each year. However, as it was used to standing outside, bringing it inside quickly made it look very sad and it ultimately died. So make sure to water it enough as the needles will experiene more evaporation than what it is accustomed to. Also acclimatizing it by only leaving it indoors for a couple of hours each day for a period before permanently bringing it inside might be beneficial.
    Also, I am loving the recent videos 🎉

    • @JuliaK-H
      @JuliaK-H Před rokem +1

      Agree, I had the same experience. The tree did not like the temperature changes and did not survive despite watering frequently. It's still something great to try, and maybe it works! Your tips are very helpful!

    Just making this comment as I was baking multiple things today and was not being organized and efficient about it so was running a hot oven waiting for the next thing more than I usually would….. it’s winter. It’s cold. Not the most efficient way to heat a room but that extra heat is not being wasted! In the summer I am much more careful and organized!

    What you buy is way more important than what you do in your home. I remember in my environmental class from last semester I read something like 98% of co2 emissions were on the industrial level. So the best thing you can do is eat less animals and buy less things (you as a general term for people, this is not directed at you) it's like one coils stop showering for a year or buy one less steak.

    When the weather warms up and you start your garden, I recommend planting a sunflower or two, to attract bees for pollination. If you have an aversion to the bees (I always did), you can plant the sunflower(s) in a far part of the garden. The bees will find their way from there. :)

    The thing I love about having land for a garden is the planning during the winter. I love thinking about what we’ll realistically eat, how I could organize the veg and if any companion planting can occur. I sketch out possibilities, draw and watercolor plans…this coming year I’m going up with a lot of vertical fruits due to space limitations and will be trellising cucumbers, cantaloupes and pie pumpkins. Then I’ll do cowpeas up as well. On the ground will be black beans and beets. Play around, especially because you’ll be starting from scratch!

    My husband and I recently bought a house about the same size as yours! We've also been focused on getting second hand items, or the highest possible quality item that will last forever if we do need to buy a new item. So far out only disappointment has been a lovely kitchen table that we bought for our last home that feels a little too large for our small dining room. I loved seeing how you've made your new house into a cozy home!

    Your home is very cozy and I love the garden space. There is so much that you will be able to do with it next spring once you have a chance to see what comes up. I have the room for raised beds (all made from free HT pallet wood) but this year I started so many seedlings that I ran out of space in the beds. Wound up planting dozens of starts directly in the ground in between perennials. Found that those actually did much better. We haven't had much rain here in the Chicago area (zone 5B) and I think plants directly in the ground have better access to water since the soil doesn't dry out as much as in a raised bed. So don't worry too much about getting/making planters. You will be perfectly fine growing in the ground as long as you amend the soil a bit. And it looks like you're getting a great start by not getting rid of the leaves. They are garden gold and there are probably many neighbors who will happily share theirs 😊

    Welcome to your home! I love that you have the hydroponic garden inside. I have a different one. I love being able to grow some food year round.
    As for outside, I just checked out a book at the library called The Postage Stamp Vegetable Garden by Karen Newcomb. I have only flipped through it, but feel it’s a great resource to get you started. I love Permiculture, I’m not practicing on large land because I don’t currently have the space. I do as you do with the leaves.
    I grow what I can in containers (our soil needs to be built up) and I grow what I can vertically.
    We have a very strange backyard microclimate. It’s west facing, but entirely covered with the canopy of the neighbors maple tree (I’m in a townhouse).
    Vertically is my favorite way to make use of space. It’s amazing what you can grow.
    Have fun!

    About gardening, be very careful! Colorado, as I’m sure you’re learning, is extremely volatile in weather. If you want to plant anything that will die at cold weather, you might have to wait until June…because it’s not unheard of to have a blizzard in May. There’s also hail storms in July typically. It’s not impossible by any means, but there are more challenges than most places!

    The house is a little jewel, I'm sohappy for you both ☺️
    As for the oven and the cookies, I'll admit I had a thought about efficiency, but I know I can trust you to be coherent with your values ☺️
    Christmas tree: it will grow and it will probably need a bigger pot at one point (it'll let you notice when it's "suffering"), then it'll keep growing. Our Christmas tree, Charlie, is now 8, slightly bigger than me and had its first fircones (baby is growing 🥲), but I need to find somewhere in a wood where they'll let me plant it, cos I can't keep it any longer in a pot 😅
    Anyway, if you ever decide to plant it in soil, out of a pot, remember: never near a house or a road, as their roots are so shallow and will mess up with floors/pavements and so on 😅

    We recently got solar on our house and are becoming conscious of our energy usage as well. To the oven question, I was interested to find out that the energy efficiency depends on how long you use it for. For instance, if you're just toasting a bagel or whatever, then a toaster or countertop toaster oven is better because it uses less power to come to temperature. However, if you're making several batches of cookies or baking for longer periods of time, the big oven is better because it is more insulated and it will maintain the temperatures for longer with less power. I kind of do the same as you, but for me if I'm baking one thing for a meal I just make my entire meal in the oven. Usually some sort of baked main course (lasagna, casserole, etc) plus a tray of veggies. Anyway, it's very interesting trying to work out the best choice in each area. Sometimes the answers aren't obvious, like with the oven. I was surprised that it is sometimes the better choice.

      Noted all your questions for another vlogmas video! But in short, we are renting (definitely can't afford to buy right now, and we just moved here so would be a little mad to buy). I am actually highly disorganised - its amazing I get anything done haha but I am quite calm except for when i'm in a really good mood then I am high energy!

    If I saw well, you have a small gynura aurantiaca :) I love it! Those plushy 'green-violet' leaves are amazing! Had some in my youth and later was gifted one and also propagated one from a botanical garden. They give good vibess and good mood with the way they look :)
    For the rest- it is an adorable, small home - and you can tell you put lots of thoughts in this. I bet it will become more and more homy within time and with all the love you have for it each other and this place :)

    How is it sharing a wall with neighbors or living technically on the same property? Your space is so nice! In-unit laundry, updated kitchen, and garden space in a nice city? It must be quite expensive, but it seems worth it. :)

    A very beautiful space. And Great for 2 or 3. Less space does bring you closer, and easy to take care of, but in a fam like ours, it is a cause of chaos. Ha!
    I have always loved smaller spaces but we are about to bring our fourth child into our 600 sq ft place and it's a nightmare. My kids all share a room from 14yrs old to 1 yr old, soon to add a new born. We have no closets, no pantry, no storage. My eldest has NO privacy, and it's impossible to tidy up anything and set things in order. We absolutely hate it and Our Christmas wish for years has been, space for our growing family!!!

    So I've seen a lot of people talk about how the Lomi is basically green washing because its an overpriced dehydrator. There is no actual compost at the end of each cycle, just dried out food scraps chopped down into small bits. What are your thoughts on it?

      I honeslty have no idea, I deferred to my husband on this because we have always had glass as a shower "curtain." I assumed we only needed one, but he got two! I guess some people just prefer the look of a softer material one?

    • @jemma50
      @jemma50 Před rokem

      @@TristessaEm LOL Personally, I don't like the look of a plastic shower curtain so that's why I use two, with a pretty fabric one that hides the plastic liner. 😊 Plus, I don't think I have ever seen a pretty liner. Not saying they aren't out there, but they are usually just plain white or beige or clear.
