My elderly neighbor was gifted a grasshopper recently but he couldn’t put it together and gave it to me instead. I’m going to build it for him and give it back ready to run for his birthday, I’m pretty excited to see his reaction. 😊 Reminds us of better times.

My first drive, my father owned a heap and use to track race.
If it's the original 80's made model I would recommend keeping it boxed and buying a newer lipo battery car for him.
Lipo last longer and some of these unboxed cars will fetch over $10,000 in 20 years.
My very first experience with a hobby grade RC was the Tamiya Sand Scorcher. My cousin had one and I was jealous. He never let me drive it. I wanted one so badly but parents couldn't afford one. Fast forward a few years later and I saved up enough to buy the Subaru Brat for $69 and bought the cheapest 2 stick Futaba and 1 battery. The thing had bushings and the mighty 380 motor. The only mods I could make are the free ones. I put those milk caps over the wheels and made my own hub caps to keep the dirt out. Hahaha. What a blast. I still have that very car but is in pieces. It will be restored someday.

Yep it's got to be restored and as a bonus, I would keep the vintage Subaru Brat and also buy a new rerelease Subaru Brat as a daily runner. And what even better is nowadays Tamiya rerelease kits are nowhere near as pricy as back in the 1980's 👌@@kougerat5388

Man that was a blast of memories. Grasshopper was my first car, then went to a big brute. Love how the hobby has changed but old school is still cool.
My very first RC was a Grasshopper. I have a Highlift Tundra, an original Ford SVT Lightning on the TT02 chassis and the new BBX BB01. I always wanted the Midnight Pumpkin.
In 85 I wanted the grasshopper bad,but being a teenager with limited funds ended up getting the Frog instead. Was totally bummed but still enjoyed my first RC.
Since then never looked back! Great haul especially the F350 that model is one of the sickest ever. Makes a really realistic model.

Have been a Tamiya fan since 1973. Loved seeing those vintage cars.
after I retired from motorcycle road racing in 1989, I filled the void with RC cars and plane, I started with the Associated RC10 (still have it!) and then started banked ovals and carpet/asphalt racing. A lot of those boxes were eye candy as I would walk through our local hobby store to the tracks. Congrats on some very cool history!

im 47 years old and the GrassHopper was my very first real rc race car my dad buy for me when i was 9 or 10. sure wish i still had that. brings back lots of memories for me.

Hey Mark, so of course I selfishly would love that grasshopper. Im 35 years old now as of 3 days ago and my very first RC car was given to me by a local hobby store owner when I was 6 years old and I played with it and did some racing with it until i was like 10 when my radio had a malfunction and lost control of the car. It sped off into traffic where it was completely destroyed. That car was an original Grasshopper. Now to be fair, I would probably build that car and shelf it because of the nostalgia bit who knows. Things change.
That grasshopper was something I have always wanted to get my hands on be fun to put together with my pops.
I have a ivan ironman stewart truck from back in day. Complete, nothing broken. Body is 90% good. No damage just aging never cleaned after running it. I worked for a roll off company few yrs back. And i pucked up a roll off container from a customer. It was full of old tether cars, several older rc vehicles, planes, helicopters. Also 60s aurora slot car tracks and 70s afx slots and lionel tcr. Will barter for.

I recently came across a Kyosho Tomahawk from 1983. It’s been fun going through all of the connections and even more fun trying to dial in the mechanical speed control.

I remember when the grasshopper came out, must of been like 10. Of course couldn't afford it but it just looked wicked. Made me smile seeing these, back in the day I would of only seen them in a catalog
The OG BlackFoot. Wow. That what made the trip worth it in my opinion
man brings back memories. back in 1987 my first real job in high school i went and bought a grasshopper. had a blast playing with and modifying and trying to race the rc-10s with that thing. used to ride 25 miles to the track on my little 50cc scooter with my tools in the top case and car on the floor board between my feet. used my scooter battery to charge my battery packs between races. only if i'd known then what i just learned today.
Started my career in RC's with the Hornet in late 85. Man that brings back memories. Drove the hell out of that thing. That score is the reason I buy all my stuff online.
If I ever go to a hobby shop I'll buy so many Tamiya kits.
Nowadays it's all Arrma and Traxxas and Axial when I wanna slow it down but the nostalgia is so real.
Been eyeing off the Avante Black Edition forever..You know what they say...never meet your heros.. Just worried I'll be underwhelmed.
this is a rare collection, these don't come along everyday I got started with a few of these old cars back in the 80's and may still have a couple in the attic
I can't believe you found such a large stash of old Tamiya's!!! How great! As I get older. I like the older cars from my youth and these fit the bill.
My first RC car was the hornet back in the 80s. Plus I had an rc10 gold pan. A original Blackfoot. When I was a kid/ teenager. Only if I kept them. LoL. I did buy another hornet when they came back out and built it just like the one I had when I was a kid. It is a shelf queen. Good stuff to watch, brings back memories. Thank you for the video

I'll have to be honest, I related to this video so much. I love the thrill of the hunt of vintage RC stuff. I have yet to build a Tamiya kit and would love to do so!

My hope is that someday you come across a Traxxas Wildcat someday. I used to race it against Optimas and Hot Shots back in 1986. Probably one of if not THE most rare hobby grade RC car.
Mark, what a haul! I especially loved the OG Blackfoot. I remember mowing grass and saving money for my Blackfoot I bought in 86'. Loved that truck, and yes the box was wrapped in plastic and had incredible blister packs inside. A work of art, Tamiya did it right❤
As a young kid going to Ascot raceway in So Cali running my frogger & rc10 this just brought back big memories. Thanks for this video.

RC10 was my first car and I loved seeing these old vehicles!❣️ Was fun to build the RC10. Back then we had to assemble them or pay to have it built. I kept waiting to see a CLOD BUSTER!! Awesome to see the old sweep style speed controller too. People never understand when I tell them about it. You scored an awesome deal❣️
The Fox was my first Hobby Grade RC. I loved that car!! Actually raced it a few times and did pretty well. Bought a Thunder Shot AWD after and had a Kyosho Javelin and a Kyosho Monster Truck(cant think of the name right now} too. So much fun! Great Video. Took me back to my childhood. Thanks Mark!

I have been collecting rc cars now for the past 30 years. I have a few originals in my collection. I have an original grasshopper, rc10, rc10L, both Kyosho USA-1s nitro n electric. But my favorite is the original release Tamiya Juggernaut. My prized possession is my Tamiya king hauler. Wish I still had my king cab, that was abused beyond repair. Sent to the rc scrap yard too soon. 😢

First rc was an original grasshopper. Was broke more than it drove. But loved every sec. it did run.

I still own my original vintage Tamiya Fox from back in 1987. And i also brought a rerelease Nova Fox. Uts almost identical apart from the lack if mechanical speed control and resistors and nicad battery and the original sponsor decals. And it drive spectacularly. 👍👌
Just built the grasshopper 2, the simple ones are some of the most fun for me because they're turned around so quickly.
This was an amazing haul. Really like this format with Doug. A wealth of knowledge💪💯
For a Tamiya collector that was 30+ minutes of jealousy! LOL! You got a lot of cool stuff in there! Lots of time and some cash to nurse some of the built ones back into top shape but the NIB stuff is great and lots of fun building!! Enjoy them Mark!

I love the vintage stuff, I wanted so many of these as a kid but it was not to be at that time. Years later I got ahold of an RC10 gold chassis and I have it on display in my dining room :) Keep up the vintage stuff and the history, it's awesome!

Yeah, no shrinkwrapped boxes in places where shoplifting isn't a problem. Nice score man. I'm not a collector, so my pick would be the Sand Scorcher or the Rampage.
Watching this video inspires me to go home and charge some batteries and take the Tamiya Beetle for a rip, or maybe the Bolink Little Red Wagon.

My favorite one was the super champ. It had the reservoir of external oil bottle for the shocks super cool.. I think they still make it today in a different version!

I always wanted a Grasshopper as my first real RC car. My parents bought me a Sears rebrand of a Nikko Rhino for Christmas and I stripped the gears out of it in 3 days. They returned it and my dad found a hobby shop that carried Traxxas stuff and I got a Traxxas Cat since it was RTR and I didn't know if I would be able to build a kit at that age. I still have it and have been kicking around the idea of getting it running again.
I have some “vintage originals” from my younger days… my first RC was a grasshopper after seeing a Frog for the first time. At age 13!!! Would have been 1984. Have an original Frog, Grasshopper, Hornet, Wild Willy, Blackfoot and and a Pajero wheelie truck! Congratulations on a great purchase!
Awesome vid taking me back in time. I can remember going to Toys R Us with my grandma and seeing all these cool rc's in boxes high up on the shelves. The Frog, Grasshopper, Hornet, Hot Shot....and then I fell in love with The Boomerang when I laid eyes on it at 12. Grandma caved and surprised me on my bday. Boy, was I thrilled until I opened it and realized it was a KIT!😮 Somehow, I got it together myself, as this wasn't my Father's Forte.
Needless to say, I had issues, and the local hobby shop I found wasn't very helpful. The owner had no interest in teaching a young lad a thing or two. I held on to it for several years in a tackle box in pieces. Eventually only holding on to the tool that came with it. (Eventually losing it on a Gen 8 trail run)
Fast forward to 8 years ago when I was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Hell of a recovery, still is, but I'm a Survivor and it got me back into rc's. Started with watching vids by you and others and it blew my mind how far they have come over the years. It got me up and moving much more, which wasn't, still isn't easy. Eventually, I found my way to crawlers and was hooked. Not only does it get me moving, it helps mentally and physically. Whether I'm out playing or wrenching, it puts me in a different world and blocks out all the stomach pain and mental crap in my head. Hard to understand I'm sure. So I thank you and the others for getting me back in the hobby, albeit not a very affordable one on a disability budget...lol.
Anyhow, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Man, I sure miss my Grandma Boobie. Also, it got me wondering if this is my midlife crisis.....
I'm not sure about my 9 and 11 yo boys, but I sure as hell would love to build an old kit like The Grasshopper with them. Something I couldn't do with my Father. Memories they could hang on to.

My first experience with hobby grade rcs was with the tamiya lunchbox and the blackfoot. Both belonged to two neighbors of ours growing up. Although the neighbor with the blackfoot never let me drive it, the lunchbox owner did let me drive it and i fell in love with the lunchbox immediately. It was the first rc i had ever seen that could pop wheelies and cause monster truck mayhem for 12-15 minutes at a time lol. Unfortunately my parents were not wealthy so the lunchbox was my dream rc for over 20 years until i was able to buy my own in my late 20s. It is still one of my all time favorite rcs and for ever will be

An amazing collection. Im 56 and these all were in my childhood. It was an amazing time for RC. I still play with one every day. I only own one Tamiya, 87 Clod Buster. But own other Brands.
