😂 When I used to see this on TV, Bet Lynch always seemed kind of old, and Deirdre was dull and frumpy.
Now, watching it in 2023, Bet looks a lot younger than I recall.
And Deirdre? She is so pretty! And slim, and natural. 😂
The years really change your perspective.
And the programme itself is such a clever mix of drama and charming comedy. It really makes today's soaps look so bloody miserable. It's an absolute pleasure to watch this again.

It has only been a few short months since Ken won back Dierdre from the more exciting Mike, and he's already plunged the poor woman back into his yawningly boring, ghastly life. Muttering, in his robotic way, about the most boring job on God's planet, casting suicidal gloom into the hearts of everybody he meets. She must have just resigned herself to a life 'most ordinary'. Either that, or she is a dedicated masochist. Poor girl.

Maybe it's because he wasn't part of a couple/double act like some of the other characters. They rarely made him more than the grumpy old man who, when he'd stopped clashing with the Fairclough's, was forever fending off Phyllis. There was a storyline involving him moving in with a widow, only to find that another old bloke had beaten him to it. The writers should have been more adventurous with Chalkie.

I used to find him so irritating, then I started to feel sorry for him, being stuck between his dreadful domineering mother who'd still have him in a pushchair if she could, and Gail, who nagged and complained endlessly and, particularly in the earlier days, regularly ran upstairs in tears.
