Greenland's Incredible City of Icebergs! - (Cultural Travel Guide to Ilulissat)

  • Travel to Greenland means experiencing a unique Inuit culture - and Icebergs! Ilulissat is one of the world's most remarkable destinations. Situated where the UNESCO recognised Ilulissat Icefjord enters Disko Bay, the town watches over a procession of icebergs that mesmerise with their fantastical shapes and colours. It is also a centre for sledge-dog culture and the howls of the dogs are an ever-present soundtrack. This short film provides a brief history of the settlement and also visits the Icefjord Centre, the Icefjord itself, and the Knud Rasmussen museum before taking to the water to view the icebergs up close. Thank you to Casper Christensen of Disko Line Explorer for providing a fascinating insight into the impact of climate change on this unique location.

Small addition. In recent years, most glaciers in Disko Bay have been growing again. Some with about thirty meters per year!

Barren wasteland, no trees, few birds and animals, a scorching 45 degrees in August, life threatening in winter, four layers of insulation. Yup, what a thrill to sit all day half frozen and watch the icebergs drift by. There's a reason the population of the whole island is 55,000. Heck, I can freeze to death in Wisconsin, don't need to spend all that money to visit an ice cube. To each her own, right?

W we won’t quibble that it’s not actually evidence of anything other than they are melting. The two do not necessarily cause and effect. Particularly since the ice sheet ice w stretched to northern France and covered much of Britain. But of course we know context should always be ignored and everything that happens has only ever happened for the first time recently…since the last time it happened.
