    I played in that game. Was on the field for kick off return for the Horned Frogs. He was that low. Nothing fake about it. Gave me goose bumps and fired us up. LT rushed his butt off that game. Great victory for us. Go Frogs!

    I was there. It was my first time attending a Navy football game. I was excited that the flyovers were so awesome. Needless to say, I was disappointed in all future flyovers. They have never been the same.

    I was at this game, as a member of the Navy FB Team, and I can assure you it's 100% real. I was also an aspiring aviator at the time so couldn't wait until our class on Monday for our aviation practicum professor give us all of the details. It is true the pilot was "grounded" for a bit as described by Dport1231 in the Top Comments. It didn't help our cause on the field as we lost to TCU that day, but it certainly was "felt" by each person and the best flyby I've ever witnessed.

    I was there, I've met the pilot on multiple occasions. He didn't get in trouble he flew again later that week. Keep in mind that this was pre 9/11 and the rules were MUCH more relaxed. The flyover from the game before was almost as low and was two F-14's.

    I was there..I'm a naval Aviator and current commercial guy...we were on the second tier on the east side...the reason the shots look different is that they are from two different cameras. One is one the field..the other on the roof of the second tier on the west side. He came is relatively slow..you can see the slats are down and the flaps are cracked to get it around from the east..usually the flyby's come straight from the south..no turns..he surprised EVERYONE by coming from the east

    I was at this game, everybody was looking high in the sky before we noticed the jet swoop through the stadium, amazing to hear the roar of the engines about a second or two behind it. I could have easily thrown and hit the plane with a baseball, thats how close it was.

  • @marrapz

    I was there with my buddy, wife and 2 year old. We were on the opposite side, fairly high, we could see the pilots head. LT was running the ball for TCU, thats why we were there. It was awesome! All the hair on my body stood straight up. They featured this on 60 minutes focusing on the safety of flyovers a couple years later, the pilot throttled down to avoid a civilian aircraft. You'll never see anything like this again, we watch it all the time and its still great.

    So is this the pass that caused all the future flyovers at Navy-Marine Corp Stadiumto be so pedestrian?

  • @EricCoop
    @EricCoop Před 7 lety +2

    This one has been attributed to the Navy-TCU game in the fall of 2000. This one, I believe, happened well after I commissioned in 2001.
    The plane in this video is an F/A-18C. The plane that flew over in 2000 was an F/A-18E Super Hornet.
    Also, the Super Hornet was actually flying slower. He had full flaps down, went into a 70-degree bank over Memorial Stadium, hit the afterburner, was applying full left rudder, and went over the treetops at a level attitude. He did not climb. This was 2000, well before the advent of camera phones and I only ever saw one picture on the internet.
    Also, I don't think the pilot in the 2000 game flew as low. He was actually slightly above the tops of the bleachers.

  • @bradwp2002
    @bradwp2002 Před 13 lety +1

    This video is 100% real. I was at that football game. I've got to say after watching the video it seemed lower in person. The pilot forgot that when you go knife edge the lift created by your wings is no longer in the opposite direction of gravity. It's one of the coolest fly-by's I've seen (till doing my own that is).

  • @marrapz
    @marrapz Před 14 lety +1

    I can verify that this did happen & I was there. It was Sept. 2000 & I was at a pregame tailgate in the SW corner. I remember it clearly because I moved from Annapolis the next day. I was with other Airline Pilot chums and former Navy pilots. The pilot was a Marine and there is no mistaking this flyby for any other. He approached exactly as you see & boy did he impress! They had a brief image of this Flyby on the ESPN Sportscenter lead in promo the next Sunday night. So again, it was 2000!!!

    This was f'ing CRAZY. I thought he was going to take out half the stadium and the midshipmen class of '01. This got #9 ranked TCU pumped and the whole team when ballistic for about 3 minutes on the sideline. Then Tomlinson and the Nations #1 defense proceeded to a routine 21-0 route.

  • @nixternal
    @nixternal Před 11 lety +2

    Whoever you talked to lied to you. The Major did not lose his wings, correct, but he was grounded for the 2 weeks prior to his retirement. The only reason he only got a small slap on the wrist is because he admitted to his errors in judgement and was retiring. This was all over the Navy/Marine Corp news in 2001, I know, I was doing my final TAD at JAG in DC right before getting out.

    He actually didn't mean to be that low, he scared the shit out of himself and he called his commander as soon as he landed and said "Boss...I fucked up". He was grounded for a few weeks, but then right back up with no other restrictions. This is one extreme but the way flyovers are now is the other. A high angle of attack, which the Hornet is extremely good at, and stalling, are 2 very different things. You could bring the F/A-18 through there at very low speed, nose up attitude, (45 degrees+) and still be nowhere near stalling and have more than enough handling characteristics. Slipping the rear away is just natural at slow speeds.

The Navy still flies this version, just not as much anymore due to the Super Hornet. Wow what an awesome pilot.

  • @BradleyTn20
    @BradleyTn20 Před 11 lety +2

    This is undoubtedly one of the best or possibly THE best fly-by I have ever seen.
    I am curious as to why the two pilots who flew over before the Georgia Tech/Wake Forest game ended up permanently losing their wings because they were too low. However, to me they didn't look like they were dangerously too low when I saw the video. Furthermore, compared to this they definitely weren't all that low.
    Curious if anyone knows why or even just have an opinion as to why the punishment was so severe.

    @kb3glo While the Marine's do fly the Hornet, the aircraft is based off of the YF-17 which was a prototype designed for the United States Air Force's Lightweight Fighter program. It lost to the YF-16. It was then entered into the Naval Fighter Attack Experimental program and eventually transformed into the F/A-18 for the Navy and Marine Corp.

They always stop here when they do their ops over the Atlantic Ocean. If you graduate, you are commissioned as an officer in one of the military branches.
