    200 years and 4 or 5 valves later and horn players still fight to find pitches. Weird instrument. Sounds cool though.

      I've played trombone for 40 years and I love it and am proud of it...but I think most brass players secretly yearn to play impressively on the horn...

      I'd definitely struggle to find pitches on my horn if a 5th valve sprouted on it! 4 is more than enough thank you :)

      @@RyanAlexanderBloom I'm aware they do, but I'm quite happy with my F/Bb double. A guy I play with often has a horn with 5, I'm pretty sure that it's an F/Bb with an extra trigger to lower the semitone for E transposition & handstopping.

    That guy must have some serious muscle dexterity in his right hand to be able to adjust pitch that finely.

    Cecil Forscyth in his book on orchestration (1914) noted that Haydn did not write for stopped notes, Mozart used stopped notes in the solo passages but rarely if ever in the tutti, and Beethoven used the stopped notes in both solo and Tutti passages.

    I'm wondering how people could make the natural horn which is tuned at A=431Hz to modern tuning (A=440Hz)? I watched some Beethoven symphonies performance with modern orchestra and I see hornists play the natural horn in modern tuning. Did they replace the original mouthpieces on those horns with some modern ones?

    • @Markworth
      @Markworth Před 4 lety +8

      You just use a different leadpipe, or a reproduction that can achieve A=440. Someone playing natural Horn professionally will have all of the gear they need for this sort of thing.
