One of my favorite things about thrift stores isn’t even the savings. I love having clothing choices that aren’t limited to whatever crazy fashion happens to be trendy.
Yard sales are fantastic, too. Also, clothes swap with friends or social groups.
Yes, I don't like the feel of the new fabrics (plastic).. Thrifting helps me have what I like.
Thank you. I'm so tired of "save money" videos that say to only have starbucks once a day, sell your fourth car, and go stay at a motel at myrtle beach instead of going on a cruise.
We make the rounds of free church dinners. Monday is the Baptists, Wednesday the Methodists, second Thursday the Presbyterians, ect. Hot meal and you don't have to shop OR cook.
I get food and things from the pantry I have a crock pot and a air fryer I have three pantries deliver to me I have a stock pile for at least three months I get caned meat like chicken and tuna I get bread and hamburger and hot dogs I get a lot of pasta to this is all from the pantrys I also get meals on wheels they give me 12 dinner a week plus 12 milks the give me fruit and. Juice I get things from temu they are really cheap I don't drive I am 70 and on disability I can make bread and cakes. Any way thanks for sharing blessing to all stay safe and healthy
Thanks for sharing and being so positive for all of us! Have a great day!
Did you know you can freeze milk and fruit juices? If you think you won't use it before the 'use by' date.
I also use our local food and clothing banks. It saves me so much money.
Wishing you a lovely day! 😀
@@donnawheeler6283 i freeze my milk and juice all the time and I put some of my dinners I get from meals on wheels in the freezer as well
I think the people who don’t listen to helpful videos or too stubborn to believe the reality are actually the ones who will go bankrupt the fastest.
Great advice! I’ll add: check garage sales.
Yep
Agreed, watch your penny’s ❤🙏💯
So many people are unwilling to learn from there mistakes. A friend’s family had to file for bankruptcy. Her daughter had about 300+ pieces of clothing. She and hubby spent $800 on tattoos. She is intelligent yet couldn’t figure out what she was doing wrong. 😮
I see that a lot, & those are the ones that don't get my help. @@kenyonbissett3512
Lentils are great to use with ground beef dishes. They're the same size shape color and texture is ground beef. When mixed into the raw ground beef and cooked up most people don't notice they're there cuz I covered in taco seasoning or spaghetti sauce. 🤫
Ty 4 the tip! I bought bags of lentils but have yet to use them bc I've not cooked any before.
I was surprised to see the price increases on beans and lentils in my stores. Only pinto beans are the same price. Lentils went from $1.32 to $1.96 overnight 😮. Eggs have gone from $3.99dz to $1.53dz. Yo-yo pricing nowadays.
Electric bill runs $60 to $70 per month now. I gave away my big stove and use a one burner hot plate and slow cooker. I gave away my big refrigerator and got a 3 cubic foot one. I keep my AC on 78 degrees. I am comfortable and blessed
Shoot, our electric bills and well into the $300-400 range for us. There’s 3 of us, I hang my clothes on a line, wash my hair every other day so not as much water is used and we keep our house at 79( would love to keep it at 77-78)…it’s rough.
@@kimknowlton3334my dad when we were young taught us the Marine Corps way to shower that takes about 5mins, with long hair, I take about 6 mins. I have really appreciated it over the years. Saves water and time. Since we were on well water our cost of water is electricity.
Electric (good ole Duke Power) is very expensive in Florida! I have friends who’s bills are $500-700/month…😳. Unfortunately, it is what it is.
@@kimknowlton3334 a friend was moving to Florida. While work was being done to their new home they used a rental. The lease paid the first $200 of the electric bill. They didn’t read it closely enough and when the landlord asked for an extra $300 they were shocked. Never had a bill that high in the mid-Atlantic for one month. lol, welcome to Florida electric costs.
If you find a sale buy extra even one. Your advice is perfect you are old school and more need too hear it today.
Adopt a different lifestyle. I love to read. Go to the library, don't buy the book. Also, rummage sales, just remember do I really need this or am I junking up my house
I use the library but I do it all online. Call your local library and ask how to borrow from them online. They'll give you the app name and the password. I get to download all the books for 2 weeks and don't have to use the gas to drive to the library.
I use my library online, too. I borrow audiobooks so I can listen and do other things. I enjoy going to the library with my granddaughter (10 yrs old). We go to the little art gallery, it changes every 90 days and there's usually a craft associated with the theme of the exhibit. The children's section has something fun for the kids and a summer reading program. Needless to say, it's our favorite thing to do together. We both enjoy it and make memories.
I’m an extreme couponer and resell my products out of my garage . My last sale I made $1,600 . My community loves it because they pay a lower price and items they would already be buying and I make some extra money that goes right into my savings
Where do you find coupons?
@@kimschacht4284 A lot of stores will give you digital coupons but I also use paper coupons which you can still get in the Sunday paper
@cindyvoorhies where do you find coupons? Please
@@sandraking9650 Most stores have digital coupons and you can still get paper coupons from the Sunday paper
Wow $1600!? That's great! You sell from your garden produce??
I agree on not being ashamed to take help from SNAP and WIC. Your taxes have paid for these programs. Use them if you qualify so you can feed your family. What qualifies me to say this? We used WIC for a while for one baby. My husband was a public school teacher with two Master’s degrees and we still qualified. When I returned to work, I’m sure my taxes eventually paid back what we used. Thanks, Brooke!
True, I'm working right now and qualify for SNAP due to my income. It helps even though it's not a boatload but I cook at home most of the time and from scratch often.
6/12/24...I AM RETIRED SINGLE LADY IN CENTRAL FL SCRAPING BY ON MY SMALL SOC SEC.....

CERTAINLY MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE ON MY MONTHLY FOOD BUDGET DURING ALL THIS HIGH INFLATION!
@@sonyafox3271if taxes do not pay for Social Programs, whether local, state or Federal, where does the money come from?
I just feel your uplifting attitude helps keep me calm...not worried at all. Just focus my meals on what is on sale each week...not what we want.
I splurged on items for KFC bowls. I should have bought breasts and made chicken tenders and canned gravy, frozen veggies (mixed) and instant mashed potatoes. I don’t know when we will eat them so I got shelf stable, freezer stable stuff. I hate spending extra for convenience but better than spoilage.
Side hustle: canning for people who dont own a canner, dont know how, or dont want to themselves.
That's a good idea are you starting I think we can work something out.
I've always wanted to learn how to can food and would definitely pay someone to can fruit and veggies for me!
last year I was selling jars of homemade pickles for $5 and I got the cucumbers for free from my mom's garden
@@lindadorman2869 that could also be someone's side hustle. Teaching other to can or just to preserve food in general.
That will be even more with your fresh garden produce as organic and non-organic produce and fruits are all sprayed with Apeel coating
Insurance costs are outrageous, too!
My car insurance is now as much as my car payment!
Agree…our home owners will insurance is outrageous! We paid $3700/yr last year and I’m SO scared to see out renewal in the next month.😢 We are already paying $7000+/yr just for home owners and car insurance and I just know it’s going up😬
This INFLATION is NOT going to end
I add refried beans to my taco meat, taste good this way. My grand kids love it like this, try it Brooke.
Unfortunately inflation is not going to get better!😤 We are in a silent depression right now. It’s not going away any time soon people!!
Inflation has improved, which means a slowdown in price increases, not necessarily any price decreases...But when so many companies are reporting record profits, that's not a "silent depression" that's just corporate greed.
@@embercello9688 keep that cognitive dissonance alive!🤷♀️
Prices are out of control, but your shopping and recipes really help! Thank you !!
Thanks Brooke for all your advice and tips!! Luv ya ❤❤❤
No garden? The local produce market here had a case of roma tomatoes 25 pounds for 15 dollars. Cheap sauce, salsa. I sell jams, jellies, breads, salsas, cookies and eggs.
It's really sad... I saw a family being put out of their home today.. They probably were renting the house..My goodness, when will price gouging end... We are ALL real people just trying to live and raise families... Greed kills... Just how much money do rich people need 😢.. Pray everyone... Jesus answers prayers ❤❤🙏🙏🙏.. Brooke, you are so precious 💞
Rent doubled for some. That is the biggest issue. Homes and apartments are being bought up by corporations. Rents have gone up before,BUT double👿
That's very sad, indeed. 🥹 Prayers for the family. ✝️
When I was growing up we hit yard sales. I did that with my kids you can find lots of bargains.
We got clothes in this order: hand me downs from our home or family, yard/garage sales or church rummage sales, thrift and finally clothing sales. The only new thing we got was underwear and socks and they had to last one year til the next Christmas.
Lemme tell you about an emergency I had. My vehicle had to get a new transmission ($4000). The same week, my HVAC unit went out! I had to spend $6100 on that! Thank goodness I have a well stocked pantry!😮
When it rains, it pours!
I was actually going to add the potatoes in taco meat idea. We started doing it when we lived in East Africa and needed to stretch out meat. Leftover cooked rice as well. Raw potatoes work fine if you do 1/4 inch dice and let them cook with the meat. Also good in curry! For all of you struggling out there, my heart hurts for you every time I go grocery shopping. From what I understand, some of the reasoning behind the price hikes is just because the companies can do it, which feels so unjust. Hoping relief is in sight, but yikes! Brooke, what you do is truly a ministry and an inspiration.❤
Lentils work really well too and are super affordable especially if you have an Indian grocery store.
Try adding corn bread to your hamburgers and bake instead of frying. You will be surprised at how good they are. Crumbled white bread works too! Yum yum!
@@sherrymcgee1071 how much corn bread do you add say to a pound?
@@marybendfeldt9596I'd think you'd do it as you would for a meatloaf, by 'eyeballing' it. I bet it'd make a delicious meatloaf, too!
In Mexico, they fry up potatoes and onions with ground beef to make tacos all the time, add taco seasonings and they are delicious!
When it comes to clothing and thrift stores here's another idea for you. For years we would go out of state to visit family in the summer. I would always bring a extra empty suitcase or one that will be empty after giving away the gifts we brought and food we ate. There are different stores with different styles as well as better quality stores than we have at home, and these types of clothing end up at their local thrift stores. My kids mat be wearing clothing that I bought for a few dollars but they are different than what everyone else was wearing unless their parents went on line and ordered everything brand new. Most items still had the store tags on them and sold for $20. to $30. but I paid $3. to $5. When they felt good about what they were wearing and these better brands washed and lasted longer, nobody was upset about where they came from.
I had a yard sale (1995) that had a b&w small 13’ tv 📺. I sold it for $5. A woman on vacation from WV went to yard sales around our area and stocked up on TVs and could sell them at home for $15-$20 from grateful buyers at that price. She did this type of thing every year. It covered the cost of her vacation every year including several restaurant meals. Both of you are so smart.
Love this idea!!
I’m a full time artist and I have been feeling the effects of the economy on my business. BUT, I have some other side hustle suggestions for the creative types:
You can make digital assets to sell online via Etsy, Creative Market, or other online sources. Crochet/knitting/ embroidery patterns. Printables. Templates. Trackers. Clipart. So many things.
Also you can do pet portraits by donation if you are an artist. People love their pets and some people are very generous if you just let them pay what they can.
If you are gifted in sewing you can do clothing repairs. I know a woman who has been doing repairs and alterations out of her house as a legit business for years. You can make money and folks can avoid having to buy new clothes. Win win!
Anyway those are just a few of my suggestions. Thank you, Brooke, for talking about these important things!!!
I'm an artist and. Can draw love doing cat portraits I will dogs and horses...ECT. excellent idea.
My grill and my crock pot are now my go to appliances. Microwave for reheating. Don't have an air fryer. Use up leftovers or reinvent them. Delicious salads for lunch. There are only two of us. I have become the Energy Police telling him (son) to turn off everything when you leave a room. I am not going to pay $400 ever again for electric & gas. I love my prep pantry. Been using your $5 method for a year.
lol my husband calls me the electric natzi
@@Cthomas5678My family & friends have called me the light nazi for years. I’m not trying to pay the electric company a ton of money cuz you can’t figure out how to hit a light switch on your way out of the room. I mean, for real 🤦♀️
@@lifebeyondthesalary2458 I remember the 70’s and we were all taught to conserve electricity and water etc and my mom would also make sure we turned off the lights when you left a room. My granddaughters lived with me for awhile and they’d come downstairs and sit and I found their room with the lights on tv on and fan on😳 I explained about turning off everything before they came downstairs to stay they did pretty good i grounded them once for not turning everything off!! Our area offers free lunch in the town park every Wednesday.
Many churches have free hot dog lunches on Saturdays.
Take advantage of the free events in the area!!!!!
Every little bit helps these days.
@@sonyafox3271 here summer lunches at schools are free to anyone under 18. The person was talking about what happens in their area, which maybe different than your area.
You are a joy to watch. Thank you for caring about so many 💚
I use Fetch and Ibotta too. I will grab receipts off of the ground and scan those too or the trash cans by the registers. You can always wash your hands.
I bought a bread machine at a thrift store and use it to make all kinds of stuff. You use the dough setting and make pizza dough, rolls, cinnamon rolls, and bread if you don’t like the shape of the bread when baked in the machine.
Thank you for reminding me to start using my bread machine again.
My mom used to make grilled peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. She was a single mom and knew how to stretch the small amount of money she made. It was our favorite meal and we didn’t realize we were “poor”.
Was it like a grilled cheese pb or just pb? Tastes great panini style
My nana used to make them for us too!! We always thought it was a real treat 😂 I swear I can't make them as good as she could. Same with her salmon patties recipe. I still haven't been able to make them as good as she could ❤ I guess it was the love ❤
Use fans to keep cool with a higher tempature on the AC.
Many great ideas. My pantry has certainly been a life saver.
Brooke, I simply love your videos. You are one of the most down-to-earth people on CZcams. There are very few tubers that I can stand to listen to on a regular basis.
When I lived in AZ, I used my crockpot outside. It helped tremendously.
Hang dry your laundry. The dryer will aff a bunch to the light bill
I hang mine all the time :) Makes the clothes smell so much better! ♥
The best Christmas present I received in the last few years was a large drying rack. It may take over the living room in my small apartment on laundry day, but it has made a difference for my budget
I’m a Retired Nina with Fibromyalgia. I use my Microwave & Toaster Oven. I’ve learned to Simplify.
Thank you!! I needed a friend today, some comfort and there you are. You do so much for so many, Brooke. Thank you. ❤

Gardening has helped our budget, and gets me outside more. It did take awhile to learn to only grow what we will actually eat.
Herbs are a good place to start. They can be grown indoors or outdoors, and with the exception of cilantro and parsley, are expensive for fresh herbs. They can really add a lot of fresh flavors to basic recipes.
Good tips. I’m old enough to remember the stagflation of the 1970s and the yuppie inflation in the 1980s. Prices came down again. The economy goes in cycles. To stretch ground beef you can also add a bit of oatmeal before you cook the ground beef. It works for chili and spaghetti. Brown lentils, too. I feel that if I can grow food (I can), I Should grow food. If it’s not for me, the Foodbank will gratefully accept it.
It was not an easy time. We ate a lot of tuna casserole, spaghetti/meat sauce, SOS, chicken pot pies at 4-5 for $1.
you will be happy to know that amazon, walmart and target just announced price cuts on tens of thousands of food and household items ||
If you have a produce farm near you, they often sell their blemished produce at a very low price. Some sell by the case, so if you're a canner, you can buy "seconds" and preserve delicious produce for later❤ Tomatoes, apples and peaches are just some examples of cases sold cheaper for seconds/blemished produce.
I don't know if you have garage or yard sales in the South, but we do here in Maine. It's a great way to get kid's clothes.
Grilling also saves heating up the house. We grill 4-5 times a week.
Hoping my little garden (just a few buckets and raised beds) grows well. I’ll be getting lots of produce from friends (I make them bread - good trade) and canning. I’m in Atlantic Canada and our growing season is short. Thanks for the tips, Brooke. Have a blessed day.
Watch Adventures in Groceryland. Melanie is in Nova Scotia and helps a lot with how to save money on groceries in Canada.
Oh my gosh, Yes! Diced potatoes in taco meat is so good. I used to do this because I liked it. I worked at a Mexican restaurant and this was in the taco meat. My family says they don’t like it. 🙄 I should do it any way. 😆
I cooked hamburger patties in my Instant Pot last week and I'll definitely do that again to keep from heating up my kitchen.
I work at a thrift store. Our columbia shorts are 6 dollars. If our sale that week happens to be shorts, they are 3. Our sales change weekly. And it is in a very nice area in Florida! AND I own a vacuum sealer! BOGO sales come in handy for lots of things!
That is awesome!
Our thrift store is pricey here. I pay attention to Walmart prices, because the thrift store prices was higher then Walmart or the same as Walmart. Smh
@@shannonamell7102I watch Walmart and other stores for seasonal clearances. I buy off season and get very deep discounts on clothing. I buy throughout the year for holiday and birthday gifts for grandkids and my sons. Lots of savings that way, too.
My daughter cooked radishes once and they are a blank canvas, as well. All the peppery taste goes away and they’re very mild. I think I’m going to use them in place of potatoes because I have to cut carbs as I’m pre-diabetic.
My moms neighbor regurbishes lawnmowers& resells them they seem to fly out if hus ysrd, all apprearvto be brand names.😊
A emergency pantry really will help when the you know what hits the fan. In our case it was a tornado. For us we lost trees and had minor roof damage. Loosing power resulted in loosing everything in the fridge and freezers. Our pantry and gas stove along with pick up meals from mercy chefs and the red cross kept us fed. We are now in the process of building the pantry back up. I now have a more extensive emergency stash of items like batteries extra cleaning supplies a gallon of bleach heavy duty trash bags and battery powered led lanterns all stored in our 5 day cooler.
Solar generators are getting cheap enough to power a refrigerator and freezer for outage times. You can keep them charged with regular electricity and use just a few solar panels to keep them charged afterwards until electricity returns. Pretty cheap ways to save thousands in frozen and refrigerated food.
Your suggestion to use cash is spot on. Plastic changes purchasing perceptions. Cash gives a visual and tactile experience to where your money is going. Greats tips!
I believe the most recent data was that people tend to spend about 30% more when using a card!
Committing to zero food waste can make a big difference. Periodically, don't grocery shop, but instead use up what you have. If food from the fridge is being thrown out on trash day, rethink your meal plans!
Learned years ago to grate a potato in my taco meat. It is sooo good.
Berries. Blueberries, Raspberries, Blackberries... we have berries that grow wild in the state parks also have relatives with berry bushes . Sometimes we go and pick berries. You can make jam. You can make syrup. You can make smoothies. Not to mention adding to breakfast items like pancakes or waffles or cereal, yogurt. Snacking...the only problem is timing when they are in season and ripe...
My mom eats a lot of cooked apples. She peels and cores the apples. I get her to save and freeze all the peels and cores and when I visit I look for good sale prices on strawberries there locally and make really yummy sugar free preserves for her using splenda. Mom is diabetic and the sugar free preserves fron the store aren't nearly as good as homemade from fresh berries. The apple peels and seeded cores release enough natural pectin when I boil them that I never have to buy any pectin or surejell at all.
I'm growing my own blueberries. They're coming in beautifully!
@@hannakinnthat's a great idea! I buy fresh cranberries and make sugar free cranberry sauce. I put it in quart sized freezer bags and freeze several bags of it. I like cranberries on lots of my foods. I also like mine a bit on the tart side. They cook so easily and self gel. Yummy!

Make sure that every business gives you a receipt when you purchase something. I know especially with fast food places in my area has got bad at not giving receipt unless we ask for one.
Food banks are an option for the working class. I make $40,000 a year but with rises costs and kid in college, i go once a month now. They said I qualify with my house note n etc.
You are so right Brooke. We needed to hear that !

Hey Brooke! Do you have a list somewhere of your survivor meals? We’ve had a deluge of earthquakes in Southern California in the past week and I’m feeling like a big one is eminent. I want to do a shop and raid my pantry this week to put stuff aside that doesn’t require gas or electricity to prepare.
The way I shop is for the year. Example my local food city had canned vegetables for .49 cents a can a few months ago. I bought a years worth. My Dollar General had 50 % of the body wash my family likes . I bought a year to year and 1/2 worth. My grocery bill has stayed the same $545 per month family of 4. Meat I can’t do this for so I buy 4 to 6 months worth. The $545 includes food, toiletries, etc. this has helped me keep my costs down.❤

Brooke, thanks for all the useful tips. Here’s another one…keep your curtains, blinds, etc shut on hot days. Helps the a/c not work so hard. Keep up the great work!! 😊
Another tip for hot summers is to put up foil in your windows that face south and west. It reflect the sun and keeps those windows cool, even during the hottest part of the day.
Note: I usually put the foil at the top of the windows to get natural light, if needed.
And use insulated curtains/drapes
You are so amazing! 🤩

Mexican Picadillo is adding potatoes and onions ect to the taco meat. I small dice onions, potatoes, and carrots to mine. I found out years ago in a Mexican restaurant here in town that they do this. Also I’ve added some quick cooking oats when the meat is cooking, they disappear and you can’t tell it’s in there.
Thank you, Brook, for being so uplifting. With this video, you got me thinking outside of the box on ways to prepare meals .
I enjoy your video. You have a calming voice also.
Tip 3 - if you keep a rotating pantry the has 3-6mo of food (over time), you can always eat at the lowest price for every meal. Be sure to store larger bulk items in a way to protect them from bugs and vermin.
Consider keeping a Price Book. There are YT videos and Google explanations of how to make one. Remember you are only keeping a list of items you buy, not the whole store.
Eventually, with time and effort, you will learn to best, least expensive way to make these approaches work for you and your family. As this happens, plan to buy a freezer to lower your cost further.
You are awesome Brooke. Thank you for this
God bless ~💜💜💜~
