    Cockatiel might not be able to mimic human voice anywhere nearly as good as macaws or African grays, but from so many uploded YT videos it seems like they are the best type of singer among all parrots and birds ;)

    Ours used to be pretty territorial as well in the beginning though we got him used to us by frequently taking him out of the cage, setting atop the cage, allowing him to perch on my shoulder, walk on the carpet, etc... Eventually he'll start being more comfortable around you. Just a matter of time before he begins to trust you though don't be discouraged. Even our bird today will open his beak when the cage opens but I'll bring my finger to his chest regardless & he'll hop on.

    Thanks for watching & thanks for sharing these great memories about Hannibal. Amazing how these tiny little birds with tiny little brains have such HUGE personalities. They whistle when they hear your car on the way to the door, they get separation anxiety when you leave & they're so happy when you come home. Very sorry to hear about your loss & thanks again for sharing...

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 12 lety +5

    Just 20 or so minutes a day is how I train Twinkie for a new song. I've found that even though he's not responding or whistling back, he's still listening. They'll also pick up repetitious sounds like buttons on the microwave, ring tones, alarm system, etc... If he's picking up these daily, random sounds I think your little guy has potential as well. :)

    It takes patience and a lot of repetition whistling to the bird. They will sing more when they are happy, as you can see. Twinkie loves his little girl!

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 11 lety +3

    I did at first with with the Andy Griffith Theme Song but found it actually didn't take much time at all, whistling a song for a few minutes in the AM before work & whistling again for (10/15+ minutes) when I got home from work. In all, I'd say 15-20 minutes a day average (5 days a week for a few weeks) & he would start whistling/perfecting on his own over time. All of his recent songs (including a few we're currently teaching) do not use any looping.

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 12 lety +3

    Definitely persistence. Twinkie will do nothing but stare at me when I whistle a new tune to him. I’ll notice that he’s paying attention (he’ll turn his head sideways & stare at me) or do some funky thing with his neck, almost like a dance, but he won’t utter the tune (maybe occasionally a random squawk). I’ll whistle to him daily, even if I do not get a response & eventually (days or even weeks down the road), he’ll start whistling the tune (& I'll join in) until he perfects it.

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 11 lety +4

    Thank you! We're in the process of teaching another one & should hopefully have it posted shortly. The next one has been pretty difficult for him though the main notes should be pretty recognizable.

    We played a looping mp3 of the Andy Griffith theme song which he picked up very quickly. That was the only time we looped the mp3 since we found that occasionally whistling tunes like the imperial march, adams family, etc… were picked up very quickly with just 30 or so minutes of whistling a day, after work. Even if they do not respond, whistle anyway since they are still listening/memorizing. (which is what we found with Twinkie)

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 12 lety +1

    As raiderhawg already mentioned, persistence is the key. I will whistle a new tune to him even though he doesn't even make an attempt to whistle back. Even though he's quiet, he's still listening. Only takes 20 minutes or so a day of whistling the same tune & he eventually picks it up. Male cockatiels however (rosy cheeks) are the most vocal & easy to train.

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 12 lety

    Thanks very much for the feedback. Will work on getting more songs/vids posted.

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 12 lety +4

    With Twinkie, I only take about 20 or 30 or so minutes a day if I want to teach him a new tune. The trick is, whistle the tune regardless, even if they don't seem to be responding. Twinkie typically won't whistle back but he'll tilt his head & look at you as if he's listening. After a week or so (or even longer), he builds the courage to start whistling out loud. (though I'm guessing he's practicing when I'm away) :)

    Ours started mimicking within 6 months or so. What's funny is, we got him initially as a pet & didn't even consider training him to whistle. It was only after he started mimicking ring tones, the microwave, the ADT alarm system touch-pad, etc... that we decided to see how far he could go. Doesn't take much time at all with training as they pick up the tunes even if they don't appear to be paying attention.

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 11 lety +2

    Hi. Cockatiel's are very social birds. It's a matter of getting them comfortable around you & daily interaction. Over time, they'll learn to trust, eat out of your hands, allow you to pet their heads/scratch their necks, etc... Just takes patience. Good luck!

    We got him very young & he started mimicking things like the alarm system, the microwave, ringtones, etc… within a few months. When we saw the potential & we started whistling the most recognizable tunes like Andy Griffith & Adams Family which he picked up very quickly. I’d say within 6 months or so after we got him he was able to whistle recognizable tunes.

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 12 lety

    He picked it up pretty quickly. We started off with the Andy Griffith theme song, basically continuously whistling the tune. We would even loop an mp3 of the song on the pc when we stepped out. This/these songs however he just picked up whenever I had time to whistle (so we no longer brainwash him with mp3's) :). He mimics our cell phones, microwave as well as the alarm system alarm pad tones.

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 11 lety

    Yes, amazing as well that it doesn't take much time for them to pick-up/remember a tune. Twinkie picked up the ADT alarm system tones, microwave as well as the home phone ring tone on his own. Good luck with the training!

  • @Pumzilla
    @Pumzilla  Před 12 lety +1

    Shortly after we got him, we noticed that he started mimicking things like the alarm system, the microwave, ringtones, etc… We figured, let’s try to whistle to him & see if he can mimic. What’s funny is, they listen even if they don’t whistle back. I’ll whistle to him daily with him doing nothing but staring at me. Then a few days or week later, we can hear him practicing the tunes. It’s just a matter of persistence & not giving up if you don’t believe they are listening.

    Hello. I've read & been told as well that if you introduce another cockatiel, they will keep each other occupied as opposed to relying on their handlers (considered their flock leaders) for companionship. We're considering getting another regardless as it appears he has a bit of separation anxiety when we step out of the house. When out of the cage he is extremely affectionate, preens my facial hair, my wife's hair, plucks at her earrings & loves when we scratch the back of his head/neck.

It's so funny when he tries though. He's around 14 though so it could be becoming harder to learn new things like that. I got him when I was a small child so I wasn't really into the bird care and closeness thing.
