I worked for Mowlem when they remediated the site for housing development... We removed the top 3m of earth and recompacted it elsewhere on the site. Lots of Victorian glass bottles, an old air raid bunker (with beds still in) and some very deep shafts. Used to cycle from Whitley Bay and get the North Shields ferry every morning. PM Alan Armstrong, Foreman Alan Ringer (both great guys)
A very moving Banner Dedication and Service at Durham Cathedral, today (11th. July, '09). A lot of hard men there in the congregation, with damp eyes! I wonder if I will live to see Westoe reopened some day?
hello Edward, I'm an archive researcher based in Sheffield making an independent documentary. I wonder if you have the original footage offline, or a master version? Do you have an email I can contact you on? This is fairly urgent. Thanks
I remember well moving coal trains in and out of Westoe many decades ago, great days, I remember well the long meanandeing line down to Westoe and the hard pull out, great days indeed.

I was on this demo it was sad for the area. Locals kept calling me Andy Cole.
My dad and a lot of his mates worked down Westoe Colliery for over 20 years. It's such a shame the pit closed!
I remember the colliery being knocked down, not long before Westoe bridges were knocked down as well =(
We got the day off school to go watch...
All the demos that ive seen on u tube draw big crowds even the smaller ones. just a big event, excellent, love it.

Yes Westoe Pit,was a big part of people’s lives ☹️
I live on the new estate that was build over this mine looks so weird seeing it like that am only 19
replaced with some poorly built dollhouses made from plasterboard
an absolute travesty for the communities and people of the Northeast of England
Maggie is to blame for it all.
Indeed she was😡
