Does Where You Develop Matter? What Happened To JD DAVISON! Stunted Growth

  • Today’s feature had star written all over him in high school, mainly known for his high flying activities that easily made him one of the top athletes entering college in 2021. During that time JD Davison had done enough at the high school level, and possessed enough elite speed, quickness and leaping ability to a warrant him being considered a one and done prospect. He was the 13th ranked player in his class and #3 overall point guard, headed to Alabama for what became just one season where he averaged 8.5ppg, 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assist per game. He played 25mpg and started just 5 games. With those numbers you don’t expect a prospect to be ready to make the life changing jump to the pros, but that’s exactly what Davison did, even though every draft board had him comfortably below the top 30 first round picks. Meaning if he was to choose this path, there would be a lot betted on his game and him developing into a rotational piece for an NBA team. Davison has played a total of 20 NBA games, 35 minutes in total in 2 seasons for the Boston Celtics after falling to the 53rd overall pick in 2022 and signed to a two way contract. Could he have been more ready for immediate impact had he chose a different side of development? What happened? Does Where You Develop Matter? What Happened To JD DAVISON! Stunted Growth

I don't think it matters that much to be honest, the G is as good a place to develop as college, maybe better. In the end, it's still on the player to skill-build on their own time.
He has definitely done work to be more in control and a better passer. But he's going to struggle to find any NBA minutes if he doesn't get his 3P shot to near league average (it's < 27% right now)

It’s funny really. Hayes had the capability to be a good scorer. Unfortunately for him he couldn’t shoot to save his life but since he’s a decent defender on that level they gave him burn to figure it out. We all know how that ended up. Then you have JD who if given the same opportunity would probably have developed into at least a solid rotational player.

Definitely should’ve stayed in college another two years. Polished his game. It couldn’t have hurt him. Agents get in the players ear however or people period. Making the league is a goal & accomplishment in itself but lasting should be the main one.

yeah - it's a tough call - he got drafted after all, and did get a g-league contract, which is actually a decent league to build skills. He has done a good job playing in better control, and is a much better passer. If he can fill in the key missing piece - a near-league-average 3-pointer, he'll have a shot.

He’s a very humble young man & has great work ethic from what I seen from old interviews at the height of his popularity few years back. I loved his highlights reels too, it’s just coming from such poor area & dominating players at that level in high school. I kinda knew he may rush to join the league too fast not even just for the money but to simply get a jumpstart on his career. May have thought whatever he learned in college play can be done twice as fast in the NBA. Just that reality sets in & many young players realize the NBA is just a totally different animal that your game has to be matured & well equipped for.

Brunson is just DIFFERENT. It seems like there's some correlation between having NBA fathers as well - they're blessed with those genetics & knowledge, their fathers know exactly how hard it is to break into the league and have connections throughout the league as well to develop the kids growing up.

Any one and done players should know going in the 2nd round is worse then going back to school...historically 2nd round players who are successful are either older players that are ready to plug in and or foreign players who are stashed for 1 to 2 years
I've never seen a a young 2nd rounder outside of GG and Nembard recently succeeded
If your one and done and your not a 1st rounder go back to school you can do all the developing in the G League but you'll never see PT in real games

I think one of his biggest issues is his ball handling. I think he only gets shots off because of his speed and athleticism. His game looks very predictable and limited. I think if he improved his ball handling skills it would make a world of a difference

JD Davison didn't contribute in the games so he doesn't deserve a ring??? What about practicing with the team, making them better! How many young players get drafted and sits the bench while their team become champions...and they don't deserve a ring?? I'm heated!!!!!

2:11 totally disagree if they’ll take you. GO PRO! He wasn’t in college during NIL so he took the money. WE all thought Caleb Love was an NBA player especially after that Natty & he’s getting no love. Next year they’re gonna call him Grandpa. NBA is obsessed with potential and youth. If you average 25 in college as a Junior they’ll just compare you someone you age like Jalen Williams and then down play you.
