The book says Maria is prettier but in this case, Julia is much much much much prettier
Seriously! No offense to Maria’s actress, but why wasn’t Justine Waddell (Julia) cast as Maria? She’s not only GORGEOUS, but a fantastic actress!
What an entrance! The family's reactions to this dynamic duo is wonderful: particularly Maria dropping the cards, which signals her imminent downfall. Austen's Fanny Price would never succeed with contemporary audiences: too timid, too self-effacing, too concerned with what she owes to her benefactors. This FP is more like Pride & Prejudice's Elizabeth Bennett: sharp witty observer ...and she writes stories too, like Alcott's Jo March. Austen wrote Fanny to be the antidote to Lizzy Bennett. Austen called Mansfield Park a novel about "ordination" i.e. becoming a minister: BIG YAWN. The bright-eyed Mary Crawford in this marvelous scene, barely suppressing a laugh at the seated Bertram family is more to our tastes nowadays.
I'm so happy to see another CZcams comment that compliments this movie! Yes, this movie does take some artistic liberties and revisions. But like you said, the book portrayed as-told on screen wouldn't appeal to anyone. The book was a chore for me to read since nothing interesting happens to Fanny.
I do believe that a true adaptation that's also interesting is achievable, but with Edmund as the protagonist. He has full insight to Fanny's character while also being tied up in the drama instead of some observer. Of course, that means it will be harder to market it as a "feminine" movie to women who may like Austen-esque movies but don't fully care about book adaptations.
NEVER GETS OLD. I get tears every time.
My word “oh, and Fanny price” hate Mrs. Norris
In this adaptation, Henry Crawford is so handsome. Even more handsome n charming than Edmund. Mary Crawford here is not as pretty as described in the book though.
Henry is so handsome…
Oh l think Mary Crawford is pretty
I think the actor playing Edmund is quite handsome and has a gentleness that the other lacks.
Henry is stunning and gorgeous and oh so charming. ❤❤❤❤❤
Jonny lee miller's eyes 😍
0:30 - she is stunningly beautiful
You forgot to mention Julia Bertram (Justine Waddell) in your list of actors in the scene.
Yes she is beautiful
Just an aside: I wonder why the family of the wealthy Sir Thomas Bertram are shown sitting in what looks like a servants' kitchen undergoing renovation. The floor is stable-yard flagstones, as you might expect in a farmer's cottage, and there is no carpet. The room is semi- basement, judging by the windows, or lack thereof, one wall has had the plaster chipped off back to the bare bricks, and all the skirting boards have been ripped out. There is almost no wall decor, the fire is out, and by Regency standards there is hardly a stick of furniture in the room, just the bare essentials. The family look rather as if they are sitting out an air raid. A bizarre set design.
Lord Grantham !?
Yes, and if you look at the small parts he played before landing in Downton Abbey, you'll find that his acting was genius in all of them.
that is not at all how it happened I mean they did not like them in the beginning at all
Don't worry, this is altogether a complete travesty. They couldn't even be bothered to cast an actress with "soft, light" eyes as Fanny.
@@ritawing1064 At least this Fanny isn't as bad as Billie Piper, in the 2007 movie, with her bleached mop of hair.
I prefered the casting of the 1983 miniseries
