This is not what Eurovision is. It is a contest started in the 1950ies to try to get European nations to know each others culture and to heal after WWII. It is and always was a political event - with all the amazing stuff about friendships and mutual respect and ugly stuff.
It's part of European history. And a great display of our very diverse culture and great artists.

It's not a talent show - it's a song contest. The songs must be original and are judged on a number of factors. Obviously the song itself, but also its presentation. In its current form, voting is in two parts. First, national professional juries cast their votes and cannot vote for their own country. Second, there is a public tele-vote. Whichever song gets the most votes wins the competition.

It started in 1956 as a pure song contest with just 8 countries competing, the singer came on, sang a song and a jury would pick the winner, as the years went on more and more countries entered and it went from a simple pick the best song contest to what it is now which bares no resemblance to what it was, it now has a massive gay following and the performances have got more camp and silly as the years went on, the voting is now done by a panel of judges and the general public and now the whole world can vote, not just the countries taking part as it used to be, i still watch it but it's not like it was!

Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) is nothing like the Voice or American Idol.
It is organized by the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) since 1956. Only Radio/TV stations of countries who are member of the EBU can enter the contest.
The song has to be original, no more then 3 minutes long and no more than 6 people can be on stage.
Until 1973 the songs were presented/song in the language of the country they represented.
Until the early 2000's it was only 1 evening, Saturday in May.
Because of the many countries entering (35+) it was spread over 2 semi-finals (Tuesday and Thursday) and the final on the Saturday, with 25 entries.
The wining country is the host of next years ESC.

The most famous country in Eurovision was always Norway back in the day. Terry Wogan commented once that they actually treated the contest with contempt because they were seemingly intentionally entering acts so awful that they would get 'nil poi' every year. Sort of like a badge of honour.
It was of course anything but contemptable. It was as funny as hell. And worth watching every year back then just to see what Norway would offer up.

Some funny performances in Eurovision. That last one Russia 2020 was never performed because it was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID. After each Country has performed people from around Europe vote for who their favourite is but you can't vote for your own Country and then they have someone from each Country giving out their scores like 2 points France, 3 points Italy and then the most a Country can get from another Country is 12 points and then whoever has the most points after each Country has voted then gets to host it the following year. Yes there are still crazy performances. I remember some from 2024 lol! Some reason Australia got to start performing in Eurovision a few years ago even though they aren't in Europe. The competition has been going since the 1950's but wasn't as crazy back then lol!

Idol is not a good likness for it. Think of it as a yearly European Championship in popular music and you will be not be far off.

  • @joni-ll6mj
    @joni-ll6mj Před 19 dny

the only thing it has in common with the voice or idol is that it is a competion with music. Otherwise it is completely different. Who is competing? TV broadcasting stations that are members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) aka Eurovision. It is a collaboration organizations of national broadcasters originally founded to provide the technical infrastucture for international live broadcast. But Eurovision also had some international shows and the by far most successful one is the Eurovision song contest. It started in the 1950s and the only time it miossed a year was because of Covid.
Full members of the EBU are in and around Europe. As it involves national TV broadcasters it is often seen as competition between countries. Members of the EBU actually extend beyond continetal Europe. This is why, for example, Israel competes. The only non full EBU member that competes as far as I know is Australia. They got a special invitation to compete at an anniversary show becasue the show is very popular in Australia. As this was a great success the invitation was renewed every year.
Every national broadcasting station send in a musical act with an original song. This is important. It is a song contest with original compositions and not a singing contest or talent contest. The singers or bands also do not need to be unknown or new artist. Often well established artist compete.
The song is up to 3 minutes long and can use any language. The artists does not need to come from the country they represent, but often they do. The Canadian Celine Dion won the competion for Switzerland in the early 1980s, wich also kind of started her international career. ABBA is another Eurovision winner.
The finale is one 4+ hours live broadcast show with about 25+ songs. There are two semi final live shows in the week before the final to qualify for the final.
The sow includes live performances of all competing songs and then a voting. Today it is a combination of national juries giving points and televoting. Both have 50% influence on the final result.
Each country can give pointst to the entries of other countries but not to their own.
The winner country/TV station of the show hosts the event in the following year. Winning is therefore expensive and that may be the reason why there is along history of cheesy funny over the top bad entries.
I personally think the show became musically more interesting and also more fun to watch in the last 15-20 years. But maybe I am just getting old.

No, it's not a tiered talent contest, it's a "fun" competition between countries that were (in the 1960s) member of the network of TV/Radio stations across Europe that shared expensive data connections to share video/sound (generally news feeds) in the days before an internet, the open circuit of data-comms was controlled to allow a TV channel in Italy to send images of an earthquake across the whole EBU network so a TV News programme in Sweden could show those images without sending a video-tale or cine-film by plane back home from a remote film-crew. For a full explanation of the politics and details find a few gay men, they will explain it to you, probably with historic videos. Eurovison has NOTHING to do with "The European Union" and is the most "camp" thing there is.

Bear in mind that these stories went out, live, in Terry's BBC Radio 2 flagship breakfast show back in the noughties / 2010's. How he got away with them, I do not know. It's still about music.. It's just that some vocal and whiney fans with incredibly bad taste or no real understanding of music would rather vote for shock value instead of song quality. And there is a whole generation that has arrived.. That feels "entitled" and can't accept defeat.

Weirdest of the weird .It's three hours of more of absolute madness that just can't be explained . The winning Country has to host it next year - a massive , expensive task so some don't really want to win . Nowadays it's absolutely anything goes and it's madly entertaining . Amazingly out of all that there have been one of two good winners also totally bizarre ones. The voting is just as crazy , best enjoyed with alcohol . I'm surprised you haven't seen one Amanda , I think you would love it .

I'm no Graham Norton hater perse. He's not anywhere near as bad as some other current presenters. But for me Eurovision stopped being watchable when Terry Wogan packed it in. He genuinely couldn't hide his disdain for some of the acts and voting. And I'm old so I still miss the 1970's when we would get Katie Boyle presenting it on stage. Because she was one of our only UK residents prepared to speak French.

Eurovision song contest is a sort of olympics for songs. Country's send in a song to compete. The performer does not need to be from that country. The competition isn't the main focus, it's also to unite by music. The main rules are that every song need to be original, so made especially for the contest. No longer than 3 minutes long. The main singer need to sing live and no more than 6 people on stage. There are 2 semi-finals where the public votes for the 10 best songs who go to the grand final along with the big 5 (Spain, Italy, Germany, France, UK) and the winner of previous year. Those big five qualify automatically because of their financial contributions. Who wins the contest organises the next year. This compilation is not a good representation of the contest.

I would say in the last decade there's been on average 1-2 'weird' songs each year, songs which you just go 'da fuck am i watching?'. 1-2 party songs where clearly the song just wants to have fun and doesn't care if it's a musical masterpiece. Then there's usually 1-2 songs that are trying but just fail miserably (usually vocals) because of bad decisions. The rest of the 20+ songs will then be a mixture of trying but not very good to masterclass of music that will be catapulting the artist into 'stardom'.

Hi Amanda. I've seen most of the entire Eurovision's from 1956 to 2024. Don't even waste you time on the 2024 one. It got so political and there was so much controversy over the Israeli conflict. This is the first time I've seen Music beaten down by politics and in-fighting. The best of the Eurovision's have been left in the past. Even the hero of 2009, Alexander Rybak refused to get involved with this years' contest. Alexander's song "Fairytales" got the Highest Votes of any Eurovision in history. He is Norway's equivalent to ABBA.

This year was one of the worst for over a decade. All the songs were pretty naff. Usually the competition throws up 5 or 6 great songs. It seems this year many acts were aiming for a European disco hit rather than win Eurovision, and quite a few thought just a spectacle would be enough. Yes there was weird, but kinda bland weird. The winning song was in my opinion ok.

@@Ardnasper Yeah, there was some really great entries this year! It's just personal taste. There's always one or two songs that everyone seems to love that I loathe, and at least one I love that does ten times worse than I expect. Also, a lot of people just seem determined to hate Eurovision no matter what. Like hating it gives them life or something. I always find that level of negativity kind of sad.
