    I’m curious how much feed per pig you are calculating for the life of each pig. I’ve seen 700-900 lbs per pig several places online. I’m curious what you are seeing for pasture raised pigs. Thanks for the videos!

    • @HeiferUSA

      Yes, sugar helps absorb the extra moisture in the prolapse so it can recede.

    Do you worry about predators with the piglets? Coyotes and dogs and such? Our proposed receiving area is out of site from our house and although we will visit them several times a day, wondering about safety, especially over night

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey jjj, when the piglets arrive on our farm, they are already large enough to defend themselves against coyotes and dogs. If you are receiving much smaller piglets or farrowing yourselves, you might want to look into extra security features for your area.

    It is a MUST to feed the pigs corn and soy? I understand that it's probably the easiest way to feed as many pigs as you have, but what if I only have 2 to 4 pigs per year?

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  Před 2 lety +4

      Hi Esco, pigs are monogastric animals and as such require a diversity in their diet. That being said, you don't have to use corn or soy. Pigs enjoy a wide variety of foods. However, if you are growing for market it is an ideal source of nutrition as it is readily available and nutrient dense. Many people also ferment their pig feeds for increased health benefits as well.

    Why sell a pig off the farm after receiving antibiotics? I know antibiotic free meat is highly advertised these days, but doesn’t the pig wind up in the food chain eventually anyway? I’m just curious. Seems like antibiotics would be unavoidable at times that sickness happens and humane treatment of the pig is necessary. Just trying to understand and I am not a farmer.

    • @HeiferUSA
      @HeiferUSA  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Joey! We raise several different breeds including red wattles and berkshire. Not sure what the best available breed is in your area though. It is always a good idea to consult with local farmers to see what is working there. We deworm as necessary, but fortunately we receive piglets from a good breeder and the issue is not too prevalent. Thanks for watching/commenting!

    The swine's genus name Sus is Latin for swine while its species name scrofa means sow and was based on an ever sow specimen in King Adolf Fredrik of Sweden's cabinet of natural curiosities. Its subspecies name domesticus means domestic. By ever, I mean a wild "boar" and that word came from the Old English word eofor, which was the usual word for an ever or wild "boar" in that language. Cabinet in that sense means a museum or small room. Can you believe that?
