I believe what you have stumbled onto is a Historic Ore Cart Accident/Spill Site.
They would have cleaned most of it up but would never be able to get it all.
Guessing where this might happen could depend on the road but back then it could be random with a wheel breaking.
I have been keeping my eyes open for spots where Mercury/Gold Amalgam was being transferred in old workings.
How did they transfer Mercury gold amalgam? I thought they just use to sprinkle it in their sluice boxes to collect fine gold, and they'd lose a bunch of it on the downstream end throughout the day?

Be extra careful up there this year! Too many weird fires seem to be "spontaneously" starting in bizarre areas. A friend was cut off from his truck after a 2 mile hike on a trail he knew well. It took 3 hrs to blaze a way out and double back to find his truck...he said his only clue was hearing spotter plsnes in the distance...thats when he saw a smoke drift.
That is definitely a concern this year.

Nice score. Wish I could post photos in comments. I hit the mother lode up in my area of the sierra more south. Thurs, sat and sun I pulled 192 pieces of gold out of about a 15x15 area in the river mostly sniping. I owe it to the pros like y’all for the knowledge it took to do it. I’m not done yet..

The rocks are tree trumps of former trees. Petrified Biblical size trees. The gold runs in the trees together with quarz and other minerals in the veins aka root systems of the trees. The best place according too my knowledge is to go to place higher up where the water comes out of the rock. The rocks, boulders and bedrock work the same way as a giant sluice box. The best gold lays at the beginning of the box.
Bring home the gold this year 2024.

In the areas I go the gold ends 5500 - 6000 foot elev.

The only silver I have found up there is two clips off a coin.
