Just go to part 3. I meant to do a 2nd piece dealing in depth with cleaning and lubing, but the edit didn't work out as I had hoped.

Nice I've used WD-40 but only in nasty situations. Example had a guy bring my a ruger 45 pistol don't remember the model. But was never cleaned in 10 years since he bought it after soaking in wd40 cleaned polished and finished with hoppes #9 and hoppes #9 all weather protection. The 45 looked like gem. Without wd40 I spend twice or three times as long cleaning it

I don't use much either, don't know about corrosive aspects, but it have heard it does cause moisture and rusting after drying. for your tools, and breaking free a tight or seized bolt man you gotta try PB blaster--that stuff is awesome for the price and 10x better than wd40 for that purpose. I use PB blaster to clean my tools and leave a protective coating (and I have noticed it seeps into bare uncoated mild steel in about 30 min leaving the surface almost dry after I wipe down my work table.

@dmanwhocan, I use mostly products designed specifically for firearms also, but I have never had any problems that I could attribute to using WD40. Copper is softer than the steel used in your barrel. Unless you are using a steel rod and inadvertantly scraping it on the barrel or you have some type of abrasive embeded in your brush you shouldn't have any problems.

I used WD-40 for soaking overnight. Gets out a lot of crud and dirt; you can see it on the surface of the WD-40 pool.

I work on extremely expensive machines, replacing bearings/clutches/and even motor drive parts. we use brake cleaner as a follow up to high quality de-greaser by the 55 gallon barrel. it won't hurt firearms. cerakote gun coatings requires using brake cleaner or acetone prior to finishing.
I don't use it for normal gun cleaning--I have too much money in my guns and spend money on Break free CLP (about a pint a year for cleaning, oiling, and gunsmithing) but brake cleaner should not hurt.

Hi I doubt you’d respond hence this has been so long ago but I have the exact same gun, except it’s the ducks unlimited edition, The recoil pad behind the bolt mine is cracked and comes out when I take apart the gun what could I use to “glue” it back? I’ve looked for the replacement part but no one has it

Was there another video prior to this? It's already disassembled and therefore, not useful to anyone but an old pro.

additives in wd40 designed to increase penetration are slightly corrosive.( the bubbling effect) but it shouldn't be a problem if wiped off..I use "kleen bore"and add a Teflon product called enviro save.i mix it in a small dropper bottle and keep shaking it as i apply it.It makes the action noticeably smoother.I like brake cleaner for actual cleaning, but wd40 is ok I guess but I just wouldn't leave it on a firearm.A lot of folks just don't take the time to strip and clean their gun

you didn't explain how to remove the bolt ---it needs to be in the center to remove it.

@stephens269 I don't use WD40 very much, but I do use it for cleaning tools and to keep them from rusting and corroding. In a pinch I will use it to stop a squeak or for loosening a rusty or corroded part or bolt. I am very currious how it is that you have come to the conclusion that it has "corrosive aspects".

@TheRedemptioner, You must have the annotations feature turned off on CZcams and also not bothered to read the description for the video. I have the warnings with every firearms related video I produce. It is like all the other lawyer related warnings printed on absolutely everything we buy these days. Unfortunately if someone doesn't have the good sense to make sure a gun is unloaded before working on it... they probably won't notice the multiple warnings either.

@selfdefensepath, Over the years I have purchased just about every gun oil and solvents known to western civilization. In the video I used only solvents designed specifically for firearms. I mention other solvents because the leading excuse I hear for not cleaning a gun is is.. not having solvents and oils produced specifically for firearms on hand. It is far better to keep a gun clean than to let it sit dirty. Ask any gunsmith or manufacturer let me know what they tell you.

As an aspiring Gunsmith I would NOT recommend WD-40. It is a petroleum product and can cause other issues down the line. I only use Gun oils and Gun cleaners on my guns, and the guns of my customers. 90% of what I do is Clean! the rest is just a matter of fixing or replacing broken or worn parts, along with educating the owner on how to maintain their gun. while I applaud your posting a video. However please in the future state your opinions as such, so not to lead someone astray.

i purchased a tristar 12guage semi-automatic shotgun and ive been having one problem with it, when i load just one shell in it, it wont fire but when i have 6 shells it will fire all the way to the last one.and then it wont fire the last shell. wat do you think is rong with it

  • @vonnieglen

@natedawg357, I often use simple green also for cleaning tasks. Because it is water based and it does a good job of removing all oils... you must make sure that you thoroughly dry your parts and make sure that you reapply an oil that will protect your parts from rust and corrosion.

  • @vonnieglen
    @vonnieglen  Před 13 lety

@daverocker1, As I have said here in other posts I use mostly products designed specifically for firearms. I have never had the brake clean that I use take paint off of a car, but I appreciate your comment. Even solvents designed for firearms can cause problems on vulnerable finishes. I have even had Simple Green which is basically just a detergent stain painted surfaces.

Not trying to troll here but I would not suggest using brake clean on a firearm. That stuff can take the paint right off of a car. May not be too bad if cleaned off immediately but why use it when you can use remoil or something that is specifically made for firearms. JMHO.

WD-40 is not too good for firearms because it has a slightly corrosive aspect to it, shouldn't be used in locks as well
