One of my favorite Munch lines that came from a later season; Nick Amaro's wife Maria shows up at the precinct confronting him about following her therapist (he thought they were having an affair). When Nick and Maria leave to talk privately, Munch says "that right there is why I stopped marrying Italian women." 😂

I miss the first season, it was so bright and sunny and goofy and Munch was a total buttmonkey
I am currently binging it all from the beginning, and I noticed the tonal shift as soon as season 2 started... :/
So goofy, apart from all the rape.
Two court scenes from season one always stand out to me: John Munch "ORGASM" scene (not in this video, but he draws simultaneous objections from prosecutor and defense) and Stabler's first appearance ending in the defendant flashes himself. Definitely a different tone than later seasons.

Yeah, playing animal death for comedy, I don't fucks with that (count that as the very first extremely shitty thing Stabler did on the show, hundreds more were soon to come).
I love how John is all the comic relief.

Season 1 was funny sometimes, but the great moments didn't come until Fin joined the case in Season 2. "He's my Jew." BEST SVU LINE EVER!
I liked the part in a later season when Munch dug evidence out of a seafood waste bin and Fin said, "Yeah, you're taking the bus home."
I started re- watching from season 1 and completly forgot about the: he's my jew line. Honestly, the full segment a the way until Fin goes: i'l

Season 1 stands out even among the golden years. It attempted to be a little more closer to NYPD Blue by focusing a little on Elliot and Olivia's lives off the job. Like in "Chat Room" when Elliot was worried about his daughter running across a predator, or when Olivia dated a reporter who wanted play out a fantasy based on a rapist they squad was looking into. But because the showrunner left in season 1, and halfway to season 2 they got Neal Baer who focused more on the investigation rather than how it affected the characters. They almost revealed Olivia's dad in season 2!
My favorites were always “Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, may you please smell the defendant” and “so what, the force of the gunshot blew his pants off?”
This is what I miss about SVU. Its new season and the previous one, don't have that spark anymore... And its not because Elliot, Cragen, and Munch left...
It's because the grim reaper of law and order is writing it.

When John Munch left I was so upset I stopped watching all together. He and Fin Tutuola are my favorite characters.
Agreed. The loss of Stabler was bad enough, but at least we still had Munch and even Cragen, then once they left, it just went downhill from there.
I'd like to see a retired Munch do a cameo on Organized Crime or even Chicago PD.

i think that season 1 of SVU had the best non-crime related moments:-P with the one liners, and the smart aleck comments and sometimes random comments. . .i love it!

His office was always stocked with candy and I remember Liv used to always be chewing gum, El was always playing with a baseball while thinking, Cassidy kept misusing or misspelling words... they all had unique little quirks, it was great.
SVU was Mayhem before Tutuola got there lol!

I watched SVU since season 1...I haven't watched the latest season though. I am glad I am not the only one that finds some of the stuff comical. I LOL at some of the sarcastic moments. The moments that aren't neccesarily funny but realistic. Those off the wall comments people make when someone else is foolish or etc. Finn and Munch crack me up the most.
Potatopte I love sarcasm, too. You should watch the “mothership” during the first few seasons (or as I heard one other fan call it, “the Old Testament”). Mike Logan and Lennie Briscoe were the MASTERS of sarcasm. They were like, and I mean this in the most affectionate way possible, Beavis and Butthead.
S1 was hilarios and had way more EO! and i love the whole "Shutup John"
I so want Elliot to come back, see Cassidy, and go “oh look, ya finally hit puberty.” or something 😂 i miss this show being easy to mistake as a comedy.
Honestly, you could probably submit that one to NBC and probably earn royalty checks!

yep, definately agree that season 1 was by far the best, they managed to get a lot of funny moments mixed in there to help get a little bit of relief from the cases. oh and Olivia Benson is my hero!

Oh my God. SVU and funny? I didn't think that was possible.
Fave moment was when Stabler was in court offering his testimony on a Flasher he arrested. Said Flasher claimed to be wrongfully accused. During Stabler's testimony he mentions the word "Shortcomings" prompting the man to flip out and flash the court. Game. Set. Match point for Stabler.
And don't forget about what he said back at the station:
"Jury came back fast?"
"He was waving his flag in court. Nobody saluted!"

i love it!! i never noticed how funny the show was in the beginning till i went back and watched a few episodes!! they were so open and funny then! now its really sensual and were all waiting for the sexual chemistry to fly off the handle!!
The reason the show worked especially back then because they had instant natural chemistry, even the first minute Chris and Mariska auditioned together it was instant, they all worked well off each other.

Barba definitely does. Everyone else? Hell no.
Amaro was a piece of shit. Dodds...was all right. While I do like Rollins and Carisi as characters, they really don't make the show any better.
me honestly, Carisi is the only character in the new SVU that's my favorite and makes it good. I do like the others but they're not favorites of mine (except for Dodds). Season 19 (current and about to be the season finale this coming Wednesday) has been one of the best seasons and feels like the old SVU again in my opinion. I also think that Peter Stone is great addition and great ADA.
Shaheed Simon I’m sad they made Carisi an Ada. He was so young and energetic, funny and spunky as a detective and we lost all thag as he became ADA.
@@potatogirl1340 while I miss him as a detective, season 21 so far was Peter Scanavino's best season in my opinion and I think Kat is a great addition.

Is it just me or did the show have more humour in the earlier seasons?
it did because of the fact that the original cast's chemistry was so natural, you also had munch, the crew's interactions with Cragen and driving him crazy so its a lot of factors and because even with the topics serious they balanced with the lives of the detectives, it kinda lost that when a lot of the original cast left, but I will say some of the newer ones are holding it down and doing a terrific job(Carisi, Rollins, Barba) it just doesnt feel the same
