    This Silvertone was given to my Cousin's Wife by her prayer partner, the Preacher. The idea behind the gift was to either give her a guitar for her and her family to enjoy or so they could sell it to help get them some funds for their first child. She had a hard time deciding what to do, but has finally asked me to help her sell this guitar as she prefers her acoustic guitar and they could really use the money.
    This appears to be a 1958 - 1960 Silvertone (built by Kay) "Aristocrat" Archtop Model 644. It is black and has it's fair share of 'issues.' Really all it needs is a better bridge and I think you'd have a much better playing guitar.
    At this point, it's really only good for slide guitar - which I attempted to demonstrate.

      put much lighter ELECTRIC strings on it and use a korean abr style bridge for usability. keep the tuners but you should take them apart and clean/lube them before reassembly.

    OK so in the last 2 months this is what I have purchased -
    4 Gibson Les Paul's (2 from you Austin)
    2 Gretsch guitars (1 Byrdland style and 1 Les Paul style)
    1 Fender Telecaster (I am in love with the telecaster now lol)
    1 Bass and 1 Electric guitar from Glarry music after watching your video
    A guitar kit off of Reverb
    2 guitars from a chinese company that I have a feeling got busted because now I cannot find them anywhere on the internet and the last time the tracking had any info my 2 guitars were still in customs, I may have gotten screwed on that purchase lol.
    OK - so I have purchased a lot of guitars since July, 7 of them were because of you Mr. Austin!!! Oh, make that 8, cause I just went to your reverb page and bought this one!! lol

      lol, Actually I bought several of these for a little business venture I am trying to get into. Customizing guitars. I know it's not an original idea but just something I find fun and interesting to do so why not see if I can earn a little spare cash. But this guitar I bought today I more than likely will only take care of that bridge issue and juts keep it for myself and in my collection. With it being as old as it possibly may be I kind of like it for nostalgic reasons.

      I don't know if you recall but a couple of weeks ago Austin posted a video of a tobacco burst Les Paul studio he was selling? He posted that video the day the buyer had informed Austin he was wanting it. Austin put the video up so the buyer could do more than just look at pictures. Austin is a VERY honest salesman and he wanted the buyer to make sure he wanted the guitar. He even told the buyer that after watching the video and seeing some of the issues with the guitar that if the buyer changed his mind, he would not be held to his promise to purchase from Reverb. I know this because I bought that guitar, as well as I am the one who bought this Silvertone lol. I had actually seen this guitar on Austin's reverb page so I was familiar with it. When I heard that it was a family member owned guitar I knew I wanted it.

      @landofahhs_1 Před 5 lety

      If that thing sold...no, if you sold that thing...You've lost any respect I ever had for you as a straight up dealer. Silvertone NEVER meant quality...just something mom and dad could buy cheap to pacify a kid that wanted to play and then quit because of being such a nightmare to play in tune without bleeding fingers.

    • @alabamahebrew
      @alabamahebrew Před 5 lety +1

      Mr. Taylor - That is an extremely rude comment that you left for Austin and I for one think you owe him an apology. Austin shows in the video the condition of this guitar, he also fully and honestly tells us exactly what all is wrong with it AND he never made it seem that these guitars were awesome. I looked online and the average asking price for one of these guitars for that same time period is between $300 and $500, Austin was asking $399 and that included shipping charges so his price was absolutely fair.
      What gives you the right to say what you said to him? Your "opinion"? Yesterday afternoon this guitar was delivered to MY door and I am pleased with it. No, it is not in the best of shape and it needs a lot of work to get it to look good. As far as the playability of it however, it is surprisingly pretty good other than the very high action, as Austin very clearly says in the video! I paid Austin his asking price and I am pleased with my purchase and ya know what? For a guitar that was a low quality POS as you implied, I say it held up pretty darn good considering it is basically 60 years old!

    • @musicmnw1982
      @musicmnw1982 Před 5 lety +1

    In 1966 i got a new silvertone very similar to this 1. It was an archtop with no cutaway. Headstock was the same as was the neck and inlays and pickgaurd the bridge was wood with thumb screws each side. No idea of model. Thought u might kno, No idea where it went but seeing that 1 really got my attention .

    It is not adjustable. It is reinforced. I had the Natural version with no pickup. I made a floating Bill Lawrence acoustic(not)that attached to the neck and strung it with Ernie Ball 10-52 and sanded the underside of the bridge. I normally played R&B but on swing band gigs it sounded great buried behind the horns like is supposed to. Then on solos I'd turn on the fender champ on 5 or so. It didn't have knobs so I just reached back and turned the amp up.

    That's a cool old guitar! As old as me! Back in the late 50's, $58 was a lot of money! I know of people who bought cars for that kind of money back then! It would be a neat guitar to fix up...maybe even reinstall a pickup in the same spot where someone had one before. A new nut, some bridge adjusting and fret work, and some lighter strings, it would be good to go!👍😎🎸🎶

I wish I would have watched it again before today, I just changed he bridge on it and slapped on some new strings, I did not really pay attention to the old ones but for some reason I assumed they were electric so I thought I would try acoustics lol, I put on 12's though. It plays pretty decent but needs some fret work. For some reason I just like playing that old thing, kind of makes ya wonder how many people played it before and the history that guitar has seen huh?

    Ok....I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my comments on the Silvertone but as a 67 year old that grew up in that era, I stand by my comments. The Silvertone acoustics sucked and were never in a class to be considered anything but a beginner tool. Compared to the cheap Asian guitars of the period no one wanted a Silvertone. Maybe that is where I'll leave this. I certainly had no intentions of insulting anyone just wanting to represent my generation as not being dumb hippies that would buy anything with strings.

    Sears catalog guitar, from my childhood. Wouldn't buy one then because the string clearance was unplayable. Can save you time messing with the bridge, it will only make the guitar tuning more erratically out of tune thru out the neck. It was a 50 buck piece of junk in 1960 and is now just a piece if junk that should be crushed and destroyed. You couldn't rock it when it was new and the same now. Don't sell this thing, destroy it, please.

    Prayer... partner? What the fuck does that even mean... You just kneel next to one another in silence? Why even have a partner in the first place

    Have to comment again, you say restore to former glory?! Even as a kid at 11 years old we new Silvertones were virtually unplayable....and you want to restore that thing? Worse you expect to sell it!? Man, I'd be embarrased...I'll never look at one of your videos the same way, sigh. I feel for the fool that pays you good money for that...thing.

      Yeah, I bet he is a schmuck huh? I mean who would pay for something just to help someone with a new baby get some extra cash?
      BTW - I bought it - Still not sure if I am going to refinish it or not but I did change the bridge and put a new nut on and the action is now down to where it should be. It is need of some fret work but for a guitar that is 60 years old I would expect it to lol.
      I saw your other post explaining why you were so negative, and I understand why you said what you did. But the reason I bought it was 1) To help the new parents out 2) Just to own a piece of guitar history, there have been many clunkers but so far this guitar seems like at one time it was a really nice guitar, not some Martin but still a decent guitar.
