This is such a breath of fresh air! I have watched Jared's R7 tutorial and I thought to myself... what possibly could Tony teach that Jared did not and you literally wrote a book about a book. Every single thing you talk about from a completely different angle in which jungle of settings suddenly make all the sense in the world. Thank you so very much for taking time to share this tutorial.

I used to watch your channel religiously years ago when I began photography. I’ve since moved on to videography.
My friend is a photographer and does it as a hobby. When I started a photography business, he invited me to do events with him while I was getting experience. I always had the idea that I would become the best and highest paid photographer in my area, but I didn’t realize, until my friend and I finished an event, put a couple drinks down and began talking about our frustrations.
He was very disrespectful to me in front of people but he apologized when I brought it up. But then he told me that his frustration was that I was turning his hobby into a business.
I understood. We agreed to be respectful in the future and to also keep in mind that for him, it will always be a hobby.
I have a degree in business so naturally everything I’m involved in, I’m trying to make money.
I’ve done very well since then as a videographer. He still does photography as a hobby. We’re still friends!

This is the best turorial for the R7, I have watched many over here in the UK. I bought recently and Couldn't get on with it, but this has opened my eyes to the potential of the camera, and therefore i am excited to go out and use it. Drawback currently is i have EF 24-70 usm L & EF 70 -200 usm is L lenses, with a converter they are big and heavy, maybe time to trade in ..... Though sigma have just brought out a new range for the crop sensor, not L quality but they look good value for money.

"Ok, let's do this one last time" (to paraphrase "Spiderman Into the Spider-Verse"):
    1) You can avoid having to clean your sensor all the time if you simply turn off the R7's power switch before taking off the lens, since switching it off closes the mechanical shutter, covering and protecting the sensor.
    2) Using the Fv mode takes many more steps than simply using the ISO button behind the shutter button to use the main dial to set the ISO. That effectively gives you the third dial everyone has been pining for.
    3) Anyone still on the waiting list for a body-only R7 should just call their dealer and change their order to include the kit lens. That's what I did on August 2nd after waiting since May 24th for the body and seeing that even Canon's own web store had only the kit, not the "body only" version. So I called B&H to change my order and they shipped the kit to me the same day. (It appears that Canon has been creating almost no "body only" boxes - they want to move the kit with the lens.)
When I got the R7 I idly snapped a picture at 150mm wide open at a1/40 second of a page in the Real Book (the premier jazz fakebook) open on my piano 30 feet away. It took up only the bottom left corner of the screen - one quarter of the screen vertically and one sixth of the screen horizontally - but enlarged on playback it was perfectly sharp, though it was taken handheld at 1/40th of a second. And it was not in the center of the lens but its extreme edge!
So my EF-S 18-135 IS nano-USM has become my video lens, since I bought the power zoom attachment on eBay recently when I saw that it's discontinued.
The much smaller and lighter - but just as sharp - RF-S 18-150 is my new walk-around lens.
    4) Under the AF setup menus, you can turn on "Touch and Drag" to use your thumb on the rear screen (while you look through the viewfinder) to position your focus point much more easily and accurately than with the joystick. Just set it to use the right-hand half of the screen for that, and to use Relative, not Absolute, positioning. This feature came in with the M50 and all the R bodies can do this! I use the "spot" focus point for back button focusing with the AF On button, and I assign eye detect to the asterisk button for my second kind of back button focusing.

As someone that got to use his fathers Canon FD (film) mount camera as a young teenager, I actually find the "basic zone" way more complex than the "creative zone", 12-13 scenes vs. controlling just two simple parameters aka. aperture and shutter speed (changing ISO while shooting is witchcraft, just as ISO>400 is crazy fast... yes I love the future)

One thing to note here, you don't need two fast SD cards, on my test one V60 and a regular V30 for the backups work just fine. There's no noticable speed difference in terms of clearing the buffer. You might as well get one fast and one slow sd card for your backups.

The dirty secret is that Canon is shipping far fewer boxes that don't include the lens. Turns out the 15-150 is a very nice lens. I'll reserve my EF-S 18-135 nano-USM for when I need the power zoom attachment for a video.

    @philiprolenick4475 Před rokem

Recent discovery - you *can* have three control dials active at once in the R7's Manual mode to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO simultaneously with the histogram live all the time. Here's how:
This setup relies on using the control ring on the lens as the third control dial, so on lenses like the R7's kit lens that use the control ring for focusing, you sacrifice manual focusing, but with lenses that have separate focus and control rings there's no sacrifice. That's any EF or EF-S lens with the EF to R Control Ring adapter, and any RF lens with both focus and control rings - like my Canon RF 100-400mm lens. The only lenses this is a problem with are the two RF-S kit lenses, since three-quarters of the RF lenses have both rings, and the other quarter have a switch on the lens to toggle between using the ring for focus or control.
To set this up, go to page 6 of the AF tab in the settings screen and set the Focus/Control ring to Control rather than the default Focus setting.
Then go to page 3 of the Camera tab and in Customize Dials you set the three dials up however you like. Since I used a pre-EOS Canon FT-QL for nearly forty years before going digital, and thus I'm used to having an aperture ring on the lens, I set the Control ring on the lens to AV. Since I'm used to setting the shutter speed on the top of the camera, I set the Main Dial to TV, and I put ISO control on the Quick Control Ring around the joystick next to the viewfinder. (Film cameras changed the ISO by changing the film you were using!)
But you can assign those three functions between those three dials however you like.
PS If you frequently want to focus manually with an RF-S lens that has only one ring, you can set one of your Custom Settings up to use the Control Ring on the lens for focusing and use the other two control dials however you prefer.

Hey, Tony! Thank you for being so generous with your time and expertise. This total newbie greatly appreciates you! Quick question. At 6 minutes and 14 seconds, you show how to format the SD card. Is there any difference between formatting via the camera or via a stand-alone computer like a desktop, laptop, tablet, etc.? On the desktop, there are more options (which, of course, adds to this newbie's confusion). Does the camera already know which of these options is best, therefore formatting on the camera is the best way to format the card? Or, does it lack these options, thus, formatting on a computer is superior? I'm referring to options like File System, Allocation Unit Size, Quick Format, etc. Thanks!

Based on excellent reviews such as yours, I bought one! I used to be a Nikon DSLR and ML shooter, but Canon blows the Z's out of the water and Canon has affordable long telephoto lenses. The R7 is an absolute steal at this price point. A strong weather sealed body, 32Mp's, a flagship R3 AF system that is unbelievable etc! I wasted too much time on Nikon. Nikon caters to the wealthier clients which explains why they haven't produced an affordable long reach zoom for the sports or wildlife shooters. If you want a longer reach, Nikon only has $2500 plus lenses available. Inexcusable Nikon. Go Canon!

I use the main dial to set the f/stop (I'm coming from the era long ago when the f/stop was set on the lens), I use the rear dial (around the joystick) as the the shutter speed dial, and I tap the ISO button to set the ISO with the main dial when needed. This is many fewer steps than using FV mode - and I run in Manual, with the small histogram on screen. I don't like to have a backseat driver grabbing the wheel when it comes to exposure. (I'd set the f/stop on the lens by defining the control ring as "Av" but that blocks using it for manual focus.)

I think you could back off the knee jerk 'turn off the beep' position, and dive into the Wrench icon menu 3 Volume section where you can turn down everything except the shutter volume, and set that to 1 (0-5). I have found this helps me know when I took a shot, when I inadvertently had it on high speed and accidentally took 4, and almost no one else around me can hear it.
Otherwise, a solid performance. I got several take-away suggestions, and have been researching this body since I got it in late July. Especially nice was the idea of leaving myself a not on the back of the body. Reading my own note to turn Location ON for wireless connection would have saved me from a few rounds of frustration. Also that Flash requires Mechanical Shutter, glad my 3rd party flashes work with this body.
The notes on Raw Burst and needing to turn on Pre Shooting will save me from similar frustrating loss of opportunity.
I do wish there was some available data on the Focus Bracketing, as my experiments have yielded sorry results. General ideas of what the camera sees as the extent of the depth of field, preferring RAW images, and how chops that down to size, based on the Focus Increment would let me get my macro shots all the way in focus, without having to go through this much trial-and-error. So far, mostly error.
I do appreciate your and your efforts. Now that your SDP price has come down I don't need to buy them used to send to friends.
Hope to see you sometime, once the West Seattle Bridge gets fixed. Keep up the good work.

Unless I need to transfer like a bunch of photos I'll plug the card into my co.puter but most the time I shoot photos connect to canon and 5hen use lr to edit then upload or send photos to ppl in like 2 minutes . But amazing video I got alot from it I just got my r7 yesterday before this camera I had and still have my m50mark2 love that camera with the right lenses but needed more and the r7 hit so many check marks for me.

I discovered that by capturing images only in RAW or CRAW I cannot magnify them on the screen, or move the image around to examine focus in other areas of the image. It takes a JPEG image to render it properly on the screen and magnify to all the levels of magnification. So now I set the Image Quality to CRAW+S2 so the Magnify button and Main dial are functional.

It isn't always necessary to decouple focus from the front button. Back button auto focus settings will override the AF settings off the front button if they are held down 1st. I enjoy tracking with eye auto focus on my front button all the time and then have back buttons set up for single point and for lowering the shutter speed.

    What does that mean?

Just bought the R7 yesterday and just starting this video but on the camera tab the menu only goes from 1-6. Is this because of an updated firmware? After adjusting the dials so that in the "M" mode they work the same as in the "Av" mode, to have the aperture under the index finger and the shutter speed under the thumb - during exposure bracketing (AEB) in manual mode (M), the camera takes subsequent photos by changing the aperture value instead of exposure time value, which causes the depth of field to change in subsequent photos. In this case, all the photos are useless and there is nothing you can do with them. What should I do to make the camera change the exposure time and not the aperture value during exposure bracketing in manual mode, so as to have different exposures with the same depth of field? I would like to mention that this problem does not occur in another Canon camera that I have, so it is probably a software error.

I don't remove the cards from the camera, I connect my camera to my computer via USB cable. I have found that the memory card slot themselves tend to be fragile. I had one break and it had to be repaired some years ago. Since I don't remove the cards, I don't have to stash extra cards all over the place. I also put cards back in right away if I ever remove them. Thanks for the video.

I'm not disputing you, I just need to clarify something. In electronic shutter mode, if it takes 1/40 of a second to scan the sensor top to bottom, how can you shoot high shutter speeds? It would seem that, in electric shutter mode, 1/40 of a second would be the max shutter speed. Does the camera scan the sensor differently in electronic first frame and mechanical shutter mode? Thanks

Sorry Tony, but I've been using that app since I've been using my 80D and it works. Yes it's not perfect. You can only connect to one device, so if connect it to my phone and I wanted to use it with my tablet I'd have to set it up all over again.
Also if you are some one that has your phone to lock after a few minutes it will disconnect, so just stop your device from locking or sleeping.
    BUT THIS APP WORKS.
Hope you don't delete my comment.

It's about time they fix all the bugs and give us a better app. Ability to download raw files instead of jpeg, ability to stay connected after the phone screen locks and better hardware in the cameras going forward, that would produce a better and more stable signal.

I wonder if someone can help me. I have just purchased the R7 having been a 7D ii and currently a 5Div. When in manual on both these cameras using either of the dials has allowed me to change both aperture and shutter speed. When I use manual on this camera one dial icon through view finder is showing on shutter and the other ISO. I can’t get that icon to change over to aperture. The only way to change the aperture is by going into the quick menu. Feeling pretty frustrated. Am I missing something here I wonder? I have searched the internet high and low but still can’t get any answers.
