My home town which I left to come to Australia 40 years ago is unrecognisable. The condition of my old school made me cry 😢

Nicely filmed! This beautiful pair of buildings next to each other on the Front Street should be standing like jewels in Stanley's little crown and not left to slowly crumble like this... whatever it takes to find someone who can find it worthwhile to make something of this buried treasure. Just putting up for sale with too many well intentioned restrictions and unknown risks doesn't look likely to get further. What could be done, what should be done?

Many thanks for the nice comments,, it has the potential to be an excellent building once again,, but as you say depends on the current state, structural etc. Plus how greedy the current owners are.

The adjacent old Town Hall building (also seen from the rear in the video) was offered for sale but to no avail by Durham County Council earlier this year, saying, "It is understood that the adjoining former Board School... is also available for sale through a 3rd Party. The Council would welcome proposals from Developers either individually for the Stanley CAP or that bring forward a comprehensive refurbishment of this part of Front Street, Stanley."
I don't think it's necessarily about being greedy, maybe just not understanding enough about how to identify and pursue the best process, including risk share, that will work for a developer (ask them to tell you, come and discuss?), so that something actually gets done. Letting it crumble further after this sale attempt can't be best for the use of these owners' assets, or for the people of Stanley.

Such a shame to see the old Board school like this. Could be lovely if renovated.
Great school , many happy memories.
So sad to see Stanley front street these days .

Just picked up on this despite it having been posted 3 years ago now. As of late 2023/early 2024 there has been some momentum in this wonderful old set of buildings being redeveloped. I'm not sure of the precise details but my understanding is it's likely to be used as part of Durham County Council's operation now tgat County Hall in Durham is being annexed. Regardless of what the useage is this is a genuinely wonderful building & imo it would be terrific if it was saved. Stanley can be a bit of a 'challenging' little town to put it politely, but let's not remember its people who create the problems, not the buildings.

My old hometown looks like a shithole now. When I lived there in the 90s, Stanley front Street was dead busy everyday all the shops open.. but now it looks like a ghost town..

Stanley isn't as bad as it looks its just front street that the council needs to work on

@@Dom_Ramm I'm from southmoor and that's even a shithole now. My dad can't sell his house, the whole area has gone downhill, I used to go to Stanley comprehensive school and used to go up Stanley bus station and get my dinner in the drivers canteen. But then nearly every shop in Stanley was open on the front Street. There even used to be a set of swings on the front Street.. and the market on a Thursday used to stretch rite down the front Street. Them were the days. It's sad to see it now tho..

@@garryfoster94 I can remember as a kid when the market was absolutely bouncing on a Thursday. I went down there last month and there was about 3 stalls trading on market day. It was absolutely dead.

Its pretty much a ghost town with most buildings boarded up, most people who live there haven't ventured out of Stanley so they don't know what a real town looks like any more.
