      Good information. I usually process each vocals with separate eq. And will treat vocal layering with 3 sections of High, mids and lows wih each having their respective harmony. This is very useful to bring in variation in vocal tones when mixed with panning.

    I like how you explained this. I have so many people that want to copy and paste the chorus and pan them. then copy and paste the verses. You did really good on this. I use vocalign on all the dub tracks to line them up with the primary verse take, same on the chorus too. Makes it align more than humanly possible and gives it this “perfect” feel.

    I've heard them called layers, dubs, punches, ad-libs, hits etc. But I think the technical term would be backup vocals. I personally tend to separate the backup vocals from _my_ sessions into two kinds: Backup Vox and Harmony Vox. And that depends on what they're doing to the vocal.
    Backup Vocals might stray from the sound whereas Harmony Vocals are tighter to the original performance, in order to specifically add additional harmonics to the vocal.

    • @tctc959
      @tctc959 Před 2 lety

    Something I used to do, and maybe even do again is that I would record two additional takes where I rap about the last half of each bar and pan them left and right so it pops out. I started doing that only for the rhymes in my songs, but I'm very unhappy with it, so I think I'll go back, use 2 stacks to beef up my lead vocal and two stacks of just the end-half of each bar. I dunno why I used to do it like that, but I always kind of liked it. It's more coherent than dubbing only the rhymes like I did a couple of times and kinda sounds better to me.

    That might sound even better if you sent your Vox Bus and Instrumental to a single Reverb to adda cohesiveness to it all. I like using Eventide 2016 Stereo Room for this. But a hall or plate would work really nicely too.
    I try to make it as short as possible so that it's only adding a touch of glue to everything.

    Thanks for these vids Sean. I assume that the glued together scenario is ideal which is the reason you run everything through the same bus. Would it be proper to run other elements of the song through the same bus, such as the instrumental or parts of it? Or is it best to keep that separate? What are best practices to achieve the glued effect across the whole song?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Před 5 lety +1

      it depends on the sonic qualities of the song but I typically prefer to keep the instrumental elements separate. I may process a parallel drum bus or group some synths together through the same compression. No rules, it's just a matter of using your ears and applying the tools to create more cohesion when needed :)
