Imagine someone who doesn't care about lying or telling the truth, and who only cares about getting what they want. That sort of person will say anything to get what they want. Typically when someone's words don't quite align with reality, but the words they use would advantage them if you assumed they were true, then you can assume they're lying.
The speed and intensity with which Riker went back and forth with his attitude/comments and emotional state raised HUGE flags for me. I liked him initially but after that rollercoaster... protect your peace, Miranda!

He goes from saying that she should just move on from hearing he slept with someone else within days of them (not even really) having broken up, and acts pretty rude about it even though she is clarifying that she agrees it was miscommunication. This isn't ''emotional", this is emotional irregulation. EVERYONE has emotions, we are humans, emotions come with it no matter your gender. It doesn't mean that having emotional irregulations and VERY clearly needing mental help justifies your deeds. Your emotions are still yours, and yours actions are yours. If you have baggage in your life, go fix it, not ruin someone else's life with it.

4 months late but the way Savannah and Christian handled this was nice. Yeah there might have been a lot of tension but they were able to talk through it and laugh and enjoy each other’s presents. He also seems like the type of guy who thinks bein ''in therapy'' is somehow equal to being better, even though people who have been in therapy for 2+ years often aren't even better and it clearly means nothing based on his behaviour in this video alone. He also seems like the type of guy that thinks being abusive by taking out his anger ''around'' his girlfriend, aka most likely breaking things, is somehow justified and excused because he is ''in therapy''.
Riker is also the type of guy who thinks being ''listened to'' is equal to having someone be obedient and do whatever you want, as his only ''advice'' to his ex is that she should ''listen more when people beg you for something they really want", which has nothing to do with listening and more with the fact they didn't do specific ACTIONS that you wanted aka were not obedient.
Now, is all of this justified because he is a ''guy who struggles"? It's not, none of it is. Your baggage is yours, your significant other is not your therapist, and you being manipulative and borderline abusive is NOT ever gonna be justified by whether or not you have mental issues going on. That's a YOU problem.

Having a conversation with your therapist about a hook-up while your ex is still in the apartment, then acting surprised that she heard part of that conversation, like she shouldn't have, the "you suck" used as a joke so naturally, diminishing the whole experience of ending their relationship by saying "I miss watching tv with you"... And then the meltdown afterwards, which is even more revealing (she has to say “I love you” to make him feel better, very manipulative from him)... The whole thing, guys... no. Please.
Being a bit older here, I can see a fully unbalanced vibe from Riker that I don’t dig. He may be either very inexperienced (too young) or a bit toxic. Good thing is, he's going to therapy.

Speaking on the Zoom session though, knowing they live together and she knows the walls are thin, she chose to stay where she could be exposed to the conversation versus leaving for the time being. I feel like that was likely a choice and maybe even predictable as it seems like that was not the first time he had online therapy and on her a bit even if unintentional. I agree though that he shouldn't be surprised that she would have her feelings hurt from overhearing.

I don't think he should watch out for what he says in therapy just 'cause there is another person in the house. therapy time is really a private thing and if the person knows to respect the other one, then they would do anything but listen to what the person is saying.
💯!!! how low to gp on a date while you're still figuring out the separation and then talking about it - was a trap for her to hurt her. And anyway, I know tons of people who do therapy and don't change because they want to tell themselves they're doing fine and everyone else is the problem. They're just offloading or abstracting rather than really addressing. Sounds like he kind of pats hinself on the back for doing therapy - and then still behaving like a douche!

I just started working on multiple businesses, hitting the gym harder and now my bank account and looks (and skin) have never been better. You have to turn your pain into motivation to do amazing things for yourself. Love is cool if it happens accordingly, but if it doesn't then I might as well take care of myself and my parents first. I've been through a break up that hurt me more than I thought I could hurt and now that I'm past that hurt the love I felt was well worth the pain of it not working out
The part where Ryker gives one word of advice and she counteracts clearly shows they are on different pages. He feels he wasn't validated/ listened to when he was at a very low point, whereas she thinks she did listen. I think they are both right in their own ways - she probably did listen and was there as much as she could be, but he needed more. And as painful as it is, its good they broke up because they are both better off finding someone who is on a better wavelength/page as each other.

Yeah I agree, I think she did listen in her own way but I think it would have been beneficial to have asked him what she needs to do to feel heard, because despite the fact that she was listening there was still something he was missing to feel seen. The only way to know each others needs though is to properly communicate.

Telling her that she needs to listen more, especially given the way that that he says it, frames his anger as a reaction to her "refusal to listen." Fuck that guy.

Therapy doesn’t always work for some types of personalities. Sometimes it just gives someone more sophisticated ways to manipulate others. There’s research on this when working with prisoner who committed serious crime. Therapy is not a magic bullet for entitlement and egotism.

Manipulative men will often mention they are in therapy to excuse their poor behaviour. If you’re lucky enough not to recognise this man’s more subtle red flag moments during this video, that’s fine - particularly if you’re a man who doesn’t have experience dating men. But don’t tell straight women who feel they notice certain traits in potential male partners -for their own emotional or physical safety when dating - that they are “hating rather than helping”. Women are not required to be emotional support animals for emotionally vulnerable men and they are allowed to discuss signs of emotional manipulation, passive aggressive communication and entitled core beliefs without worrying about how that makes anyone else feel.

I feel so sorry for the girl in the Jean Jacket, she was being manipulated with his passive aggressiveness.
At 5:57 to right about at 6:48 , nearly all of us have felt that way. The realization that the future you dreamt with that person - the certainty of it and how sure you were that dreams would become reality - will now not happen ... you can hear it in the way he conveys his feelings and emotions. To his credit, he reminds us how fresh the breakup is, and wow, I remembered feeling the way he does in that part of this video.
As much as I loathe platitudes, Ryker: it will get better. Time has a funny way of working things out. My ex-wife and I were each others best friends; I never ever thought I would feel that way about someone else ever again. Turns out, 5 years later, someone else came along and made me feel alive again. Take your time, heal, learn from the past, and keep bettering yourself. With the right attitude and mindset, it gets better. Really hoping he overcomes the hurt. I felt that one deep.
Time has the funniest way of healing things.. love that you posted this and agree with it all. I, too, know that feeling of certainty about the future, especially when it comes to those I love. Planning things, imagining the future, simply daydreaming about whatever but always with them and you in mind, to not.. it's earth-shattering until you can breathe again knowing you're okay.
