Badd Medicine here and its Megamind reaction time
Though he is the most brilliant supervillain the world has known, Megamind (Will Ferrell) is the least successful. Thwarted repeatedly by heroic Metro Man (Brad Pitt), Megamind is more surprised than anyone when he actually manages to defeat his longtime enemy. But Megamind has no purpose in life without Metro Man, so he creates a new opponent, who quickly decides that it's more fun to be a bad guy than a hero.
Megamind film stars the voices of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, and Brad Pitt. It tells the story of Megamind, a brilliant alien supervillain; after defeating his long-time nemesis Metro Man, Megamind creates a new hero to fight but must act to save the city when his "creation" becomes an even worse villain than he was.

The main reason why this movie flopped is that it came out at the same time as the first Despicable Me movie, I think kids were more drawn to that movie over this one cause this one is more complex and adults didn't really want to give an animated movie that much attention. It's unfortunate that Megmind falls into that area of being too mature for kids and being judge by adults just for being an animated movie, it's still a stigma that hurts lots of great animated movies and shows.

As a woman, I have interacted with many a Hal's. I thankfully married a Megamind though lol. I think the big thing is what the Oak said about being genuine is absolutely what it is. You can usually tell when someone is only pushing things THEY like onto you to try and set up intimate scenarios, and when someone is genuinely doing what they believe makes you happy.
Hal gets rejeceted? He becomes comically cruel. Megamind gets rejected? He reflects on what he did wrong, but as soon as Roxy is under threat, he's there to help her out of genuine affection. And the intent is what separates it as either creepy or endearing.

These young men need to know that being nice isn't the same as being good. They need to know that love and attraction isn't transactional. So when it came to watching an animated villain movie, everyone saw Megamind as the less anticipated follow up to this concept even though they were so different and had been in production at the same time.

Oak is such a good dude (genuinely). He went straight into one of the main points of this film. "The Good Guy" and "The Bad Guy" tropes. This movie examines this with two major plots: The Clark Kent of it all and the "Best Friend Good Guy". Is a super hero inherently good or were there factors (like being praised all their life and having it insanely easy). Is the villain inherently bad (or maybe they were seen as the problem from the jump by society so they had no other options but to be the other side of the coin). And is the "best friend" who always puppy dog follows the woman who is obsessed and devoted to her actually a real friend (or does he expect more).
Obviously not all men, super heroes, villains fit this but it's worth investigating and questioning. For Mega Mind he represents the kids who maybe grew up in poor neighborhoods who are seen by society and the justice system as the problem (they feel like they can never win or be the good guy). Brad Pitts character represents people who grew up in privilege who got everything (without maybe really earning/deserving it and sometimes even really wanting it). There is extreme pressure in having to be the good guy the successful one. No room for failure.
Jonah Hill's character (ironically) represents the guys who think they're the solution to the problem ("the nice guys") but are actually toxic. Because they believe being "nice" means they deserve things. That's not real friendship or real generosity. You are kind to be kind not to get things in return. These types of men can and do lash out at women when they don't get what they want from them. It can be and is very dangerous.
It's encouraging to see men acknowledge this and be able to spot and highlight this. There are some really good humans out here raising their kids to be good humans. It's important for young people to see that some behaviors are toxic (even dangerous) but that there is good in the world and that there are people really working hard to change things in the right direction (like men who are examples of positive masculinity: Badd Medicine host).

It’s kind of alarming that some reactors seem to almost side with Hal. They expect Hal to get the girl in some way. Im glad you guys picked up on what was happening. I think a lot of people (especially hormonal teenagers) could learn from the themes in this movie. Placing conditions or expecting reward for acts of kindness is borderline predatory. when I was a kid, I hated metroman for his reasons, but now I'm grown, I completely understand metroman
Metro Man was tired of always being a hero. It's not that he dislikes saving people, but rather felt like that he never really had a choice.
He decided to MAKE a choice, and chose to give up crime-fighting and go into retirement.
He away be of what the city love him to be, there savior. But now he realized that he should have become someone that he love to be instead.
Metroman's message is often overlooked, it's alright to help others and all, but you are not responsible for anyone's happiness, you should come first on your list of priorities, and no matter how much better the world would be with your help, if you are not happy, then what's the point? Do what you love to do and be who you want to be, and don't let anyone or anything stop you or make you feel wrong for doing so.

    • @ScarlettM

What about moral responsibility? If you can help someone, you should. I don't understand how MetroMan could go on playing on his guitar when someone in the city is screaming for help because their love ones are in mortal danger. It's like walking by without stopping when you see someone drowning. You are not responsible for that, but no decent would ever shake your hand knowing that you could have saved someone's life and just chose to focus on yourself.

@@renoslash1890It cost $130 million plus marketing which was probably an additional $50 million and as a rule a movie has to make 2.5 times its budget just to break even, which is $320 million. So if it's box office take was $320 million of which the studio only gets half, the studio either broke even or lost a little. The studio spent $130 million plus $50 million for a total expense of $180 million, half of $320 million is $160 million. That is considered a flop.

It really shows just how much the trio of Metroman, Megamind, and Roxanne trusted each other
Not a single moment of her being captured was she afraid or trying to escape, and Metroman could've just stopped time and gotten her at any second, but didn't
Whereas with Hal, she's immediately terrified for her safety if not her life, seeing "someone like him" have powers, and then promptly gets twisted around by Megamind as well

I love the detail of the eyes being their original colour when a character uses the device to look like someone else, it's a great clue if you spot it. Using the weather to emphasise an emotion is called pathetic fallacy, it's a common and effective technique! Also, although they use a recognisable voice cast, I personally think everyone embraced their roles well and gave some decent voice acting. We don't see it often these days when live action celebs get involved.

I'm fine with Megamind not having a sequel. This movie was clearly very well thought out and if you just make another one because the first one was great, it's rarely going to be so good even with the same writers. They clearly had some specific concepts and themes in mind with this movie that were explored well and there's really no need for more. You'd have to touch very different themes in the sequel for it to be even worth making and I doubt it'll get this good. I prefer to let things stop where they should.

Now that he is considered to be the hero of the city he can't really go for the fun of breaking the rules and being mischievous, also having vilains plans gives him a goal to strive for, he always fails but it motivates him to push even harder.

This movie is one of the most underrated animations ever. It subverted the superhero tropes so well. There were so many hidden detail and easter eggs. I think the reason Megamind mispronounced so many words because he wasn't allowed to go to school and had to teach himself English. The mispronunciations were ones that someone who isn't a native speaker and doesn't understand how illogical the english language is. "School" wouldn't look like it has a "sk" sound. Elvis himself loved the idea of being a superhero or a secret agent, he was rather inspired by Captain Marvel Jr. aka one of the Shazam family Freddy Freeman.

I love how they show the different grades of good and bad/evil with different characters. Like how it's made pretty obvious that Roxanne is the true hero with her actions, but she's so humble that no one ever considers her one. The scene where they're talking about what makes a true hero and finding someone who embodies those things, and she's literally standing right in front of him while her qualities are being listed off. She's the first one to always do the right thing. In this way, it also shows how she and Megamind are genuinely compatible, because they're both good people. Also that metroman knew Megamind was just playing at being bad the whole time and considered him a buddy. The depth of writing is brilliant.
It's a bit frustrating that people feel like crying is what makes a movie a masterpiece or not though. This film is perfectly constructed with fantastic character writing and delivers on many other emotions. The focus is just different than the usual Pixar or serious Dreamworks stuff, but I think it's on level with them and even exceeds in a lot of aspects. HTTYD 2 is good but it's actually kind of messy in some ways in comparison to this. Not every movie needs to make you cry and it's "failure" to do so shouldn't be used against it. Just different genres, and a movie can be a "5" in comedy/drama, or a "5" in drama/fantasy etc. There's room for all of it.

I'm so glad you guys had such a good time with this movie, it's just such a brilliant subversion of the superhero genre and absolutely hilarious and I absolutely LOVE IT 💖

Ouuuu this was a great reaction! I love watching you guys. It's like watching "family" in my Badd Medicine voice lol this movie was severely underrated but I'm glad more folks are watching now. It also came out the year of some pretty big movies, Harry Potter, Inception, Insidious, to name a few.

My top 3 DreamWorks movies are How to Train Your Dragon, The Prince of Egypt, and Megamind.
For me, these 3 never get old no matter how many times I watch them. And there aren’t a lot of movies I can say that about.

Nice!! I'm so glad you guys dug this movie. It's one of my favorites that doesn't get the acclaim it deserves. So damn clever and funny.

I love this movie so much and I am so happy more and more people are turning their eyes toward it. The music slaps and is used so well throughout the movie, it's just pure joy.
