WAS THIS A GOOD IDEA!? First 500 Miles in My Ferrari SF90 with Roof Box

- It's time to get on the road! My Ferrari SF90 Stradale is fully prepared and ready for a rather unusual adventure, but it's day 1 and that means the first 500 miles / 800kms to France. The question is, how well are these suction roof bars going to hold up with the box!?
The SF90 is an absolutely fantastic car to use for so many purposes, only let down by the lack of luggage space as a lot of the front area is used for the electric motors that support and bring it to 1,000hp. While that's absolutely a non-issue for daily driving as I do at home to and from @TheShmuseum, it does mean that if you want to go on a longer adventure, another plan is required. Given my former life working as a ski instructor... that means a roof box!
I bought a now discontinued Thule roof box from a Volvo dealership (a rebrand exercise for the same product) and a set of SeaSucker Monkey Bars, before getting the box itself painted into Blu Elettrico to match the car at Godleman's. Simultaneously, the tyres have been swapped over to a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin in case we happen to find some snow on our travels - which is certainly the objective.
The first day kicks off from the barn with a long leg ahead to take the Eurotunnel to France and make our way all the way down to Strasbourg, with the slight nerves of how well this roof contraption is going to hold up along the way. Let's find out how it goes!
Thanks for watching, Tim

Rumour has it that he woke up in the night to check his roof bars haven't come loose. 😂😂
No joke!
Probably should have pulled over to check it a few times. Oh wait! He did. Was he convinced? Hell no🤭
I have this for 3 years now, not one issue . Holidays are 3000 kms ...
what you need is an Apple Air Tag so you can track the roof box when it flies off on the motorway
not sure if that works since he's using an android
& hopefully the car or truck behind him doesn’t run over it….
Once you've seen the aftermath of a roof box coming off! .. You realise the anxiety isn't misplaced to be checking at every opportunity.. Part and parcel of considerate driving and ski road trip enjoyment... Enjoy the mountains.
People complaining or saying it’s stupid to put a roof box on the SF90 - Shmee’s business is creating entertaining CZcams videos. Yes he could just throw his gear in the Lusso or an SUV and go out on a drive. But we watch for things like this!
nope im out, this is like watching Clark Griswold..
this is not why im here..
@@Hansen710 Guy trying to daily his supercar = not fun
Guy turns his cars into garage queens = not fun
Can't win
@@Hansen710 well we won't be missing you.
One of the coolest looking SF90s. Something about throwing a box on top
I love it!
Clark Griswold is that you ??
@@Hansen710 ...thought you said you were out?
You should always secure the luggage inside the roofbox. Thule boxes usually comes with straps and have anchoring points inside the box to secure the luggage.
Even small and light bags can cause a lot of damage if the box opens up at high speed.
It’s great to see someone who actually drives their supercars. Not just let them sit around. Well done!!
The SF90 looks great!! Like the paint matched roof box!!
Really smart to constantly be checking. I do something similar carrying a kayak. It’s nice how it does not strap in through the windows.
I wasn't sure at first but seeing it again the Roof Box does look really Cool on the SF90! 👌
You should check out the roof boxes from Asphaltkind. They are designed for speeds over 130 kph and are built in a way that the aero ist disturbed as much. The best part ist that they are made from carbon or crop fiber and can be made to your liking when it comes to the colour
The shape is cool, but going fast isn't hugely beneficial if the weak point is how you attach to the car in the first place. Not so many supercars have dedicated roof bar mounting systems, but I'm quite happy with the result.
that will also make your car looks like Clark Griswold is on vacation in it.
you might as well buy a vw buzz, your cool car will not look better with a box on top
decides GLS is faster then a roofbox over that distance
@@Shmee150 well, shape of the box does matters, actually. exactly in combination with your concern. the most likely reason for the box to come off isn't due to sheer drag, caused by frontal area, alone, but change in wind direction behind. this causes _induced_ drag quickly exceeding _parasitic_ drag. and should that end up being lift (what your box looks like since the flow on top probably gonna stay attached, causing the air to bend downwards, which then isn't counteracted upon from beneath when the two streams meet behind the box), then you need to be even more worried. sub 50 mph, no bad shape ever gonna produce noticable forces. but above 80, things do change. cheers! 😄
and should you happen to read that: that's why going up- or downhill is what you really need to be careful about! in Europe, there's plenty of freeway stretches with an inclination. trust me, going either side is "problematic." it'd be a fallacy to think, going down on a descending slope is only going to add pressure on the mountings, therefore they'll be stronger/hold better. no, you also greatly increase drag, which can make your box fly off anyways.
@@Shmee150 and only now started to actually watch the video, lol. when you're worried (which is a very sensible thing to do), then you should also always make sure to completely stuff the box. imagine it's halfway filled, luggage happily resting at the rear section and you need to slam the breaks. weight will dynamically shift, yes. but when the luggage from inside the box hits the very front, you get and additional extra bunch, potentially capable of knocking your box off. just saying. cheers!
Your sf90 spec is absolutely spot on!!! Your “ski box” turned out perfect!!!
Keep up the Great Work!! 🙏🏻✌🏼🙏🏻✌🏼
Looking forward to this adventure. Hopefully we'll get to see your skills on the slopes. Safe travels. Have fun!
awesome to see you and the car today in St Moritz:) Cheers and have a nice and safe trip towards new locations :)
That’s sick man! It’s definitely an absolute upgrade on the sf90
So great. The 21st century version of seeing a new ‘71 911S with ski racks, covered with snow. Kudos for using vehicles to enrich your life, as well as creating truly interesting content. Just awesome.
I love the roof box!! Just don't go 175mph and the box will be fine. 💯
Shmee150 Awesome Video I'm glad you made to Strasbourg safely and that your ski box is working well and I can't wait to see the SF90 Winter Tour
Safe travels, Tim! I love Michelin Pilot Alpin tires. I had them on my BMW in the winter years driving through Minnesota and Wisconsin (USA). Have fun!
Great video Team Shmee 👍 It reminds me of a testarossa video that Harry's Garage posted in a similar fashion, when he put a fold up bicycle in the back behind the seats, and an outboard boat motor in the "frunk" on a European drive from the UK over to France i think. Lovely videos 📹 😀 thank you for the hard work 😀 also wanted to add, I love the colour of the seats in the SF. Great choice 👌
20min checking a roof box/bars that are absolutely fine. This is TGE style churning
I just love your Eurotrip content, its just something about it
Your vids are all so Good quality thanks for everything ❤❤❤
I’m ready for another Shmeeventure!

That's an epic idea.... have a safe journey Tim
Welcome back home Shmee! Thanks for visiting the states
That was great, almost like a top fuel team, you go guys !
Looks awesome. Thanks for the Content!!!!
Good to see someone driving such cars. I was watching some of the car auctions recently and all these cars for sale never being driven at all.
Absolutely love the roof box 👍
my first time on the autobahn a car in front of me had bikes on the back and one of the childseats on the bike flew off the back, luckily landed between the lanes. But yes was a scary experience. Glad you’re being super careful with the roofbox
Gosh I can only imagine, that reminds me of Final Destination... the stuff you don't want happening
Thanks for the ride!
Living my dream Shmee!! Least practical but most fun!
Thanks for taking us along on another epic road trip. LETSSS GOOO!!!
Tim, you could do these super car continental tours on your channel for the next 40 years and I’d be a very happy viewer living vicariously through you.
Looks absolutely mad! Loving the colour match.
Car looks awesome, looking forward to the rest of the trip. On a side note, I can't believe you got fuel at what is probably the most expensive petrol station in the area. Purely convenience I assume?
Luggage Box looks amazing 💙💙💙
That looks amazing on the sf90!
Excellent quality video as always mate, just an idea, maybe and just maybe a tour around the coast of Europe from eurotunnel to North of spain Portugal back to spain and the all the way long the Mediterranean coast??? Just for the pleasure, roads and views?
The SF90 looks awesome. I might be slightly biased because I love roof boxes but oh well
Looks great Shmee. I was building a house and used my Acura wagon to hall load way too big. While tying these loads at the Home Depot parking lot, people would always say, “Why don’t you get a truck?” I’d say, “Because once I finish the house, I won’t need the truck.” Since I live 1 mile from Home Depot, i way overloaded the car. It looked ridiculous. I like how the SF90 looks with the storage box.
Have a great trip! We r waiting you in Italy 🇮🇹 ciao Tim
love the blue and that cool to see the train that took awhile to build
Simply an epic look! A Plymouth Prowler, with a matching trailer, is the only thing that comes close.
Haha those are amazing!
@@Shmee150 You know, building a matching trailer for one of your Shmee mobiles might just put you over the top! Fort GT, Senna, Zenvo. You Know, The practical road trip cars. Memories, not mileage😊 A Zenvo with a trailer in the USA. Shattered!
Awesome video tim really living the super car dream. #NoGarageQueens. Safe travels.
I used that hashtag and this video came up 😀
Excited for this one
Looks great with colormatching Box
this reminds me of the time i got to work on a Sunday morning about 25 years ago with half a roof rack and no ladder, no idea when it came off
Wow a super car with a roof box. It looks interesting
Looks cool!
I agree
Koeningsegg did a 300 liter factory carbon roof box project with Thule, 12 years ago. It was aerodynamically correct, guaranteeing to stay on up to 300 km/h.
Nice easy trip 👍👍👍
Looks great with that thingie on the top, lol!
I Love Looking 👀 at the SF90 Shmee, it’s just an totally stunning 🤩 car, everything about it, Just a Beautiful fast cool sports car, your car is the best looking SF90 period.
it is funny how many peeps laughed at this idea yrs ago...but it makes perfect sense on luggage limited supercars
another great video
makes sense but looks ridiculous, not in a good way.
It’s cool that the ski box works on the FS90 on the road trips
Tim's OCD makes me smile. Dirty cars, funny noises, roof box checks and dirty hands. But his OCD and analytical nature has obviously done him pretty good. Thanks for the ride along and smiles.
That blue is amazing!!!
No one video is Same, the last 100 videos. Good Going Shmee. Best New Content On CZcams.🙌🏻
So bloody cool!
Wow this man is a machine!!!!! Your grind is a absolute inspiration !!!! Thank you Tim
BLOODY LEGEND!
My dads f150 does the same thing when you're at speed. The hood bounces when its fully latched shut... love ford...
Omg the roof box is doing exactly what someone designed it to do! J/K I’d be extra careful with my SF90 too if I had one
Love the SF90, such a cool car
Had the lid on my Halfords top box blow open on the motorway mounted on top of my Skoda Felicia Bohemia estate. Proper scary moments! Be careful Tim.
For 10 years I've been living in Strasbourg and you will go there the moment I am abroad sigh :D. I wish I could see this SF90 in real life.
Awesome car love the car n interior🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.
I see you love this car a lot & were probably really nervous when Cody started the experiments on his 😂
HI !!! I saw you this evening along the A2 motorway in Lugano North / South Switzerland !!!!
great half hahaha !!!
I follow you on youtube !!! 👍🏻
Looks good
Cheers mate 😎 👌

Hello from England
Good Saturday morning from California 🌞🇺🇸🌞
There is a max speed when having such a roof box, we have the Volvo version of this roof box indeed in black gloss finish.
He bought it from a Volvo dealer and had it painted. lol
400th like cant wait for more videos from this epic trip
Beautiful
Like me, you're a perfectionist. On the flipside, relax slightly more on the roofbox. 😁
It is a stunning looking car 👌👏
I live near Dartford Crossing brother amazing 👏 🙌 👌
Love the color and love the car
Spotted you near Strasbourg going the opposite way, real shame I only got to see the car for split seconds 👀
My dads 96 corvette does the walk away locking 😂 oh oh and and it unlocks when you walk up too !! 1996 !
I think you should mount that back a little, one set of bars on the roof glass and the other on the glass over the engine..idk
Hey. Beautiful car. You should put a yellow pin strip on the sky box. Just my thoughts.
Very brave Tim but good. I would be just as worried about that box and suckers….they do work but I would be forever thinking that they could release underbite strain of airflow pulling the box upwards. I would be torn…using the car is wonderful…the box is very good…together..ummm…it would be too worried! 😱😱😱😀😬😬😬
What a nice colour
Also will suction keep a 100 pound box on the roof of an otherwise aero car at high speeds?
Not sure how confident I’d feel about that roof box??
Beautiful car lv it
Lol I've stuck a roof box on my MR2 and for the first few hundred miles I was tripping out but now after 1500+ miles up and down California and speeds of just over 100 I'm not as conscious about the box on top anymore lol. They definitely affect MPGs tho 😂💀
Will you ever have all the cars in a photoshoot or in the garage? Like every car you pwn even the ones spread out across the countries.
They should all be together at some point before long
i gave up with ski racks with my 992 for trips to austria, send the skis by dhl now
very cool
I wish there were more road trip videos like this when you are in the US, like the drive through the Death Valley type of video, cause when you are in US it is mostly jumping from garage to garage, without much in between. I understand that particular garage is the main point of the video and having it mixed with road trip is maybe not suitable cause you like to keep it clean and on subject but I, and many of us here, just adore road trip videos like this so yeah, pity :)
I have to confess on Part 3 of the US tour, we didn't really drive anything interesting to share with you. The legs we did were all just highway from one to the next because we've already hit some of the best spots. I also shipped it across country so that meant a week of filming without having my car present, hence again it didn't appear so much. Part 4 is back more on the road though; the itinerary is almost fully set.
@@Shmee150 OK, makes sense, that's why you appeared so quickly in Florida. Can't wait to see the drives through the Alps with SF90 :)
Woohoo!! We are away!!😍😍
Cool AF you should have covered the roof box in a sticker bomb!
16:15 min - Shmee needs a trailer hook on the SF90! 😄👌
@shmee150 I've always found a bit of weight in a roofbox makes them a bit quieter. Don't know why but I hear mine more when it's empty.
