PPE is incredibly important with any resin or epoxy, including UV resin, and it's often disregarded by folks who see these epoxy brands touting "Low VOC" or "No VOC", when they are referring to the *UN MIXED* parts. Once you mix A + B, that chemical reaction starts, and is incredibly toxic. Some folks may not see a reaction immediately, and so they think they're fine. But your body can only tolerate so much. Some think the "smell" of the epoxy equates to safety... as in "oh, I hardly smell it, so it's fine." You can't smell carbon monoxide, but that is deadly. Folks have lost pets due to doing resin/epoxy crafts in their homes. Folks have put themselves in the hospital for doing resin/epoxy crafts in their homes. It's not something to take lightly. You absolutely need a respirator with organic vapor cartridges. You need adequate ventilation - preferably work outside. Do thorough research. Check the MSDS.
I've just seen this after I wrote similar too. This is not a well-researched video. Well said. Resin has a huge amount of danger involved, as it is a pure chemical you are working with. And yes, I nearly lost a pet and ended up very ill myself, due to watching poor youtube videos in the early days. And many of those people became very sick soon after.
Yes, and that's not only just the 2 part epoxy resin but also the UV Resin as well. I recently tried UV resin for the first time and learned very quickly/instantly to use a respirator.
@@HelloImAru Omg, yes. The UV resin smells worse to me than the 2 parts. It's marketed as the instant gratification alternative, but whew the smell. I'm practicing and learning how to use resin. Haven't selected a niche yet. Minus the smell, I'm enjoying learning about resin crafting.
AHH FINALLY!! I'm starting a resin business, but just putting it out there- watch what you ship your art in! Resin heats up when it's curing, and if you package a fresh piece of art in say... bubble wrap, it'll take on all of those indentations. Glassine paper seems like the best material to wrap resin art in though
This is a good tip, and sounds like a good thing to research before sending pieces - what is the ideal curing time to consider the resin in your product "solid". This goes along with the practice piece I was talking about.
You might want to add that in terms of protective equipment, a mask for fumes is really important for working on larger and more in-depth pieces. If you have good ventilation, it might not be as necessary but its a really good investment regardless.
I was discouraged with selling my art because of the high demand but, living near the beach now, I feel more so much more confident because I have natural resources for the type of art I enjoy! Watching this, gave me so much more confidence in doing this!

This needs to be a two part video For DIY. There is so much flexibility and potential for resin to create just about anything from jewelry to 6 ft tall figures and furniture.Resin casting can bring in huge profit and residual income if you study your target market.

I love doing resin and the thing that I start out with is the gemstone silicone mold that I got from Michael's it was on sale and I used it for my choker for Halloween. Then the rest of the resin gemstones that I made I gave the rest to my aunt, because she makes jewelry to do business and doing resin jewelry to the best thing that I ever done. Also my mom is buying me the resin ring silicone mold from Amazon and it's also great for weddings or any ring that they can used for.🙂
I asked a resin artist on Instagram if the silicone molds were oven safe, because I thought maybe they could be used with polymer clay. And I asked if they thought resin and polymer clay would work well together. They didn't have any answer for me, and said to let them know how it went if I tried experimenting with it myself. I might some day, but right now I'm working on a nonfiction book, and working on turning the book into workbooks and courses and card/board games, so I don't have the time to experiment with it just yet.
I would definitely look more into this before starting in on it. Most molds will probably have safety and use instructions somewhere in their description.
@@CreativeHiveCo - Right after making this comment, I did a Google search and found a CZcams Channel that uses silicone molds with polymer clay, and in one of their videos, they put resin on top of the clay. I do believe that there is a market for all types of products at all price points, you just need to find the people that will pay for your work. That's why pinpointing your target audience is so important.

You have to find influencers in that niche to work with. While mommy influencers may not be a match, but there is an audience for you. Do you follow anyone you would consider "big" in this niche? However, because resin is highly flammable, you may want to think about the products you make with it. Resin ashtrays may not be the best combination.

It totally depends on your products - what materials you decide to use, the types of molds you wish to purchase, and how much safety equipment you need. This is such a variable figure.

Hi there, you can certainly have a main design with variations in colors or style! Or you can have different designs totally. The key is that you don't want it to look like you have an empty shelf.

But this depends on various factors. Also, consignment shops typically take a percentage of the sale price as their commission, which can vary from shop to shop. You'll need to consider whether the commission they charge is worth the convenience they offer. I personally prefer selling online using my own website though.

Because it's resin, you could keep them in the same shop, but the look of the products should be similar - in color and/or design. If they are going to be completely different then they should be split up.
Hi Ananya, I think that there are a variety of styles that are popular now so you aren't limited here. The best thing to do is think about your own design style and then start checking out the market for that. For example, if you are drawn to bold and colorful art then check out website that also sell bold and colorful art. See how popular it is and see what kind of artists to find doing it well.

If you are going to be doing both at once and the aesthetic is going to be completely different, then I would suggest setting up two. If the aesthetic is going to be similar, then you could start with one for now and then expand. But, you could grab the additional IG handle that you want now and hang on to it for the future.

Resin is highly toxic & highly flammable....so explain to me why people are making ashtrays, grinders, shot glasses, incense holders, spoons, cutting boards and all types of crazy crazy stuff. Does anyone research anymore? 😐 Stick to keychains
I suspect a lot of people don’t know, and a percentage of the ones who do know, just don’t care. It’s such a popular craft, and not everybody is aware of the warnings, they just see videos talking about how fun and exciting it is and how you can sell your work, and then they dive right in and they’re wondering months later why they have constant headaches or skin irritation or they can’t stop coughing. It just flipping kills me to see the stuff happen :(
@@saint.hudson13 Agreed, many already have, sadly… If you read through Facebook groups of crafters and Etsy sellers and things like that, there are stories almost daily about people getting their shop shut down, and at least once a month about somebody getting sued :(
I’m only partway through the video, but I just want to add the comment that safety should be a big factor in deciding what products to make as well. I’m horrified to see resin shot glasses, resin silverware, resin cutting boards,… Resin is highly toxic during mixing, it is not food safe for anything more than very brief accidental contact once cured, And it’s broken down by alcohol, so making shot glasses is basically like drinking liquefied resin. Selling anything meant for food is setting yourself up for a lawsuit (and it doesn’t matter if you win or if you think you’re right or wrong… Do you have the money to even defend when one comes through?) i’m constantly horrified at dangers of the things that I see other people selling. 😩☹️
The resin I use is food safe and heat resistant and is used for countertops. I will of course be attaching a caution tag that it's not oven safe and should be hand washed.
@@jackievoit5371 Please do look again... you will find marketing language plays a big part in this. Usually the 'food safe' turns out to only be if there is NOTHING added to the mix (so no gels, colours, pigments) and even then it is 'incidental contact' safe which is different to being safe to just eat off. Even using a knife on resin (eg. a cheeseboard) is bad as it does affect the surface and add potential risk. I have been a victim and read far too many people who have been affected due to the products not being truly open about the facts.
@@purpleluna8413 Not safe to use if they are coated with resin. Wood boards where only the handle is coated are fine (and any of them are great for decoration, just as long as the recipient understands that they are not to be used for real.) Reason it’s not safe, is that you don’t want to cut on a resin board, because the resin would chip off into your food in little bits. It doesn’t have the chemical properties to hold it together of the way a plastic cutting board would for instance. In addition, resin, even the brand that market themselves as food safe, are not actually food safe. You can drop some thing on them and pick it up really quick and it’s fine, but you do not want food sitting on it longer absorbing the chemicals.
Again, this is why I said that people need to do their research before starting. Artists and makers need to understand the chemicals they are working with and what they can be used for and not.
Indeed. It’s so so frustrating to see how many people get excited about it, but nobody ever tells them how dangerous it can be. It’s one of those products that I feel like should almost never be talked about without a disclaimer to go with it. It’s really really disconcerting seeing videos that promote resin as a craft or business, but don’t add any disclaimer about the safety. It may not be your job to warn everybody, but this sort of product is so toxic, that I don’t feel like it should ever be promoted without safety information right alongside. Edit: I’m in the middle of the video, and super concerned that safety information was glossed over so quickly, and the most important thing, respirators, weren’t even mentioned or named one time. This video frankly almost feels really irresponsible, like it should be taken down, and edited to include safety information before it’s reposted. :(
She clearly says to RESEARCH BEFORE BEGINNING!!! It isn’t her responsibility to “warn” anyone of anything. It’s the makers responsibility to know what they are getting themselves into before hand. That is why many things are made with labels to educate individuals about the product.
@@courtneycocofountain641 she made the choice to include a little bit of safety information, but skipped over the most important part, which then gives off the impression that it must not be important, because anything important would have been highlighted in her commentary. When you’re taking information from somebody that you view as an authority on whatever topic they’re talking about, that seems like a pretty irresponsible omission. Whether or not one agrees that it’s her job to warn people, this is such a dangerous enough hobby, that it seems highly irresponsible to not to, simply for the sake of being a good human being. Hyping something up, without sharing the dangers at the same time, is how there are entire Facebook groups dedicated to people who got sick and never knew why. :( frankly, many people are reactionary by nature. When you hear about something fun and exciting, many peoples natural reaction is to jump in, not to go look for all the potential pitfalls. So, knowing this, it seems like the responsible and simply good thing to do to give people the best warnings you can.

So I see why she didn’t get much into the ins and out of the actual production of resin art. Again, we as makers have to have self knowledge of the things we seek to produce. I’m a painter, and many videos don’t say that paint is harmful and a respirator should be worn while painting. But because I care about myself and health, I rely on my own research and knowledge.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinion! 😊 You can absolutely offer a variety of different products in your online shop but it's really important to keep everything cohesive (from your website to your product line to your overall branding, general style, etc.) and speaking to your target niche/ideal customers. Having that solid foundation really helps a lot with your marketing especially at the beginning.
This is not a good video, and this is no industry or art just to 'jump into'!!! Resin sells expensively because it is very expensive to get CORRECTLY set up and the extensive supplies required are costly. PLEASE discuss the fact this stuff is extremely toxic! It goes WAY beyond just gloves and glasses!! This should only be used with full PPE equipment (no matter what the marketing says)! Even the clip shown of the kids watching in this video is WRONG! Resin should NEVER be used around children, pets or by pregnant women. It should not be used on anything that gets food on it (chopping boards is only for 'incidental contact' not lying on it) or touches the mouth (eg. wine glasses/shot glasses). Even low-toxic ones give off fumes as soon as you heat or mix it. It needs to be very carefully used, as it lets of gases and is flammable. You must have good ventilation and never be used in normal living areas! And yes, I learnt this the hard way, due to poor online information - and the result was my pet bird nearly died and I got very ill. It should never touch your skin as there is a condition that can cause permanent resin allergy.

This is not a resin tutorial video or a step-by-step breakdown of the process, this is a video on how to start a resin business and the business aspect of it - why it can be advantageous to start selling resin products and the basics needed to get started and where to sell. Anyone working in a medium using chemicals should thoroughly research their craft and how to keep themselves safe.

So many people have been made ill from resin being misrepresented; we are deeply wanting to stop that trend. This is not an easy money maker as suggested; it’s expensive and very involved.

I asked a resin artist on Instagram if the silicone molds were oven safe, because I thought maybe they could be used with polymer clay. And I asked if they thought resin and polymer clay would work well together. They didn't have any answer for me, and said to let them know how it went if I tried experimenting with it myself. I might some day, but right now I'm working on a nonfiction book, and working on turning the book into workbooks and courses and card/board games, so I don't have the time to experiment with it just yet.
I would definitely look more into this before starting in on it. Most molds will probably have safety and use instructions somewhere in their description.
@@CreativeHiveCo - Right after making this comment, I did a Google search and found a CZcams Channel that uses silicone molds with polymer clay, and in one of their videos, they put resin on top of the clay. You have to find influencers in that niche to work with. While mommy influencers may not be a match, but there is an audience for you. Do you follow anyone you would consider "big" in this niche? However, because resin is highly flammable, you may want to think about the products you make with it. Resin ashtrays may not be the best combination.

Hi there, you can certainly have a main design with variations in colors or style! Or you can have different designs totally. The key is that you don't want it to look like you have an empty shelf.

Because it's resin, you could keep them in the same shop, but the look of the products should be similar - in color and/or design. If they are going to be completely different then they should be split up.

Hey! I am soon going to start a resin business but I am quite confused about the number of accounts I should create coz I am going to make resin Jewelry and Home decors, Can you please suggest, should I make two different accounts on Instagram ( because the niche is different)
If you are going to be doing both at once and the aesthetic is going to be completely different, then I would suggest setting up two. If the aesthetic is going to be similar, then you could start with one for now and then expand. But, you could grab the additional IG handle that you want now and hang on to it for the future.

Resin is highly toxic & highly flammable....so explain to me why people are making ashtrays, grinders, shot glasses, incense holders, spoons, cutting boards and all types of crazy crazy stuff. Does anyone research anymore? 😐 Stick to keychains
I suspect a lot of people don’t know, and a percentage of the ones who do know, just don’t care. It’s such a popular craft, and not everybody is aware of the warnings, they just see videos talking about how fun and exciting it is and how you can sell your work, and then they dive right in and they’re wondering months later why they have constant headaches or skin irritation or they can’t stop coughing. It just flipping kills me to see the stuff happen :(

@@saint.hudson13 Agreed, many already have, sadly… If you read through Facebook groups of crafters and Etsy sellers and things like that, there are stories almost daily about people getting their shop shut down, and at least once a month about somebody getting sued :(
It is really important for makers to do thorough research into their medium, especially when dealing with chemicals.
I’m only partway through the video, but I just want to add the comment that safety should be a big factor in deciding what products to make as well. I’m horrified to see resin shot glasses, resin silverware, resin cutting boards,… Resin is highly toxic during mixing, it is not food safe for anything more than very brief accidental contact once cured, And it’s broken down by alcohol, so making shot glasses is basically like drinking liquefied resin. Selling anything meant for food is setting yourself up for a lawsuit (and it doesn’t matter if you win or if you think you’re right or wrong… Do you have the money to even defend when one comes through?) i’m constantly horrified at dangers of the things that I see other people selling. 😩☹️
The resin I use is food safe and heat resistant and is used for countertops. I will of course be attaching a caution tag that it's not oven safe and should be hand washed.
@@jackievoit5371 Please do look again... you will find marketing language plays a big part in this. Usually the 'food safe' turns out to only be if there is NOTHING added to the mix (so no gels, colours, pigments) and even then it is 'incidental contact' safe which is different to being safe to just eat off. Even using a knife on resin (eg. a cheeseboard) is bad as it does affect the surface and add potential risk. I have been a victim and read far too many people who have been affected due to the products not being truly open about the facts.
So all those cheeseboard? Not safe I don't want to make them but love them and thought may buy one for Mum as a present
@@purpleluna8413 Not safe to use if they are coated with resin. Wood boards where only the handle is coated are fine (and any of them are great for decoration, just as long as the recipient understands that they are not to be used for real.)
Reason it’s not safe, is that you don’t want to cut on a resin board, because the resin would chip off into your food in little bits. It doesn’t have the chemical properties to hold it together of the way a plastic cutting board would for instance. In addition, resin, even the brand that market themselves as food safe, are not actually food safe. You can drop some thing on them and pick it up really quick and it’s fine, but you do not want food sitting on it longer absorbing the chemicals.
Again, this is why I said that people need to do their research before starting. Artists and makers need to understand the chemicals they are working with and what they can be used for and not.

Indeed. It’s so so frustrating to see how many people get excited about it, but nobody ever tells them how dangerous it can be. It’s one of those products that I feel like should almost never be talked about without a disclaimer to go with it. I hope anybody who watches this video doesn’t make themselves sick by jumping in without knowing the protective equipment and methods that they need.

It’s really really disconcerting seeing videos that promote resin as a craft or business, but don’t add any disclaimer about the safety. It may not be your job to warn everybody, but this sort of product is so toxic, that I don’t feel like it should ever be promoted without safety information right alongside. Edit: I’m in the middle of the video, and super concerned that safety information was glossed over so quickly, and the most important thing, respirators, weren’t even mentioned or named one time. This video frankly almost feels really irresponsible, like it should be taken down, and edited to include safety information before it’s reposted. :(
She clearly says to RESEARCH BEFORE BEGINNING!!! It isn’t her responsibility to “warn” anyone of anything. It’s the makers responsibility to know what they are getting themselves into before hand. That is why many things are made with labels to educate individuals about the product.

When you’re taking information from somebody that you view as an authority on whatever topic they’re talking about, that seems like a pretty irresponsible omission. Whether or not one agrees that it’s her job to warn people, this is such a dangerous enough hobby, that it seems highly irresponsible to not to, simply for the sake of being a good human being. Hyping something up, without sharing the dangers at the same time, is how there are entire Facebook groups dedicated to people who got sick and never knew why. :( frankly, many people are reactionary by nature. When you hear about something fun and exciting, many peoples natural reaction is to jump in, not to go look for all the potential pitfalls. So, knowing this, it seems like the responsible and simply good thing to do to give people the best warnings you can.
@@MariW736 I can see where you’re coming from, but again.... This video was solely titled how to start a resin business. Not a tutorial or a breakdown. So I see why she didn’t get much into the ins and out of the actual production of resin art. Again, we as makers have to have self knowledge of the things we seek to produce. I’m a painter, and many videos don’t say that paint is harmful and a respirator should be worn while painting. But because I care about myself and health, I rely on my own research and knowledge.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinion! 😊 You can absolutely offer a variety of different products in your online shop but it's really important to keep everything cohesive (from your website to your product line to your overall branding, general style, etc.) and speaking to your target niche/ideal customers. Having that solid foundation really helps a lot with your marketing especially at the beginning.
This is not a good video, and this is no industry or art just to 'jump into'!!! Resin sells expensively because it is very expensive to get CORRECTLY set up and the extensive supplies required are costly. PLEASE discuss the fact this stuff is extremely toxic! It goes WAY beyond just gloves and glasses!! This should only be used with full PPE equipment (no matter what the marketing says)! Even the clip shown of the kids watching in this video is WRONG! Resin should NEVER be used around children, pets or by pregnant women. It should not be used on anything that gets food on it (chopping boards is only for 'incidental contact' not lying on it) or touches the mouth (eg. wine glasses/shot glasses). Even low-toxic ones give off fumes as soon as you heat or mix it. It needs to be very carefully used, as it lets of gases and is flammable. You must have good ventilation and never be used in normal living areas!
And yes, I learnt this the hard way, due to poor online information - and the result was my pet bird nearly died and I got very ill. It should never touch your skin as there is a condition that can cause permanent resin allergy.

This is not a resin tutorial video or a step-by-step breakdown of the process, this is a video on how to start a resin business and the business aspect of it - why it can be advantageous to start selling resin products and the basics needed to get started and where to sell. Anyone working in a medium using chemicals should thoroughly research their craft and how to keep themselves safe.

So many people have been made ill from resin being misrepresented; we are deeply wanting to stop that trend. This is not an easy money maker as suggested; it’s expensive and very involved.
