If you are a long-lost fan, just close your eyes, sit back, and let KC sing for you and remind you of your good ol' 'Yesterday Once More.'
Audio tracks from an early generation source courtesy of my dear friend S., Los Angeles. I'm forever grateful for your thoughtfulness and generosity, girl.
'Last One Singing The Blues' was released on 'Karen Carpenter' the solo album in 1996. It's the track that made this video unavailable on mobile devices as specified by UMG, the copyright owner. Sorry, folks. I should have left that track out.
Before you post opinions that you may have of Karen, Richard Carpenter, Phil Ramone, and A&M Records executives, we only ask that you take the time to feel for Karen in her desperate plight to explore and in her personal health struggle and just appreciate/cherish her rare and unique talents - because those are what is left of her. She has been gone more than 30 years but still continues to sing and comfort countless millions around the world every day. That is what a true legacy of a real artist offers. PLEASE give her due respect.
Therefore, any rude, demeaning, or disrespectful comments or personal attacks on the above-mentioned individuals will be removed.
Technical, biographical, or constructive comments on the contents, style, or quality of these tracks, as well as personal reflections, are most welcome.

Her solo album was truly an expression of Karen’s womanhood. She wasn’t being stifled by her brother. She took a risk. I’m glad she did. “Something‘s Missing” is magic.

I was in London on 4th February 1983 when I heard of Karen`s death. I was eating in a bar and someone said, "Why are you only playing Carpenter songs tonight?" The owner replied, "It is because Karen Carpenter died today." It was a sad day for me, but Karen will always be alive as long as people listen to her beautiful voice.

@@KeonnieA I too remember details of when I heard of her passing. I lived near the Carpenters Downey, CA home and just happened to be on the freeway which was about 1000 feet from their house, around the time Karen collapsed at home. Later, I heard on the news and was deeply saddened. To this day, still tear up when I think of losing such a talent. Her parents opened the viewing to the public, which I attended. She looked beautiful... still miss her today.

I know Karen will be Blessed. Karen graced us all with her beautiful songs, despite her relentless and ravaging illness and getting used by men who never really loved or cared for her. Karen left this world absolutely heartbroke. God Bless Karen Forever.

I worked as a music director at a radio station in the mid-80s, I would have put this on the air (and we had a lot of records coming in the mail every day that didn't get played). It's clear that Phil Ramone did a terrific job producing her recordings. It makes you wonder how her life could have been different had they released it in 1979. It's interesting how it sounds similar to Billy Joel's 52nd Street album (which yielded a lot of hits when it came out in 1978), not surprising since Ramone produced that and a number of Billy Joel's band members play on it.

Fun fact: the song Jimmy Mack is reported to be about James McEachin, record producer who left the music industry to become an actor in the mid to late 60s. "Jimmy Mack" was his nickname.

Godbless You. Not the Karen Carpenter we were used to hearing. She intended for this to be the case. Every artist needs to explore in order to grow. That is what Karen did here. I am glad she had the chance, even though the reception the project got, from those she most sought to please, must have been terribly painful for her. Give this music a chance. These songs grow on you...they are different and not as suited for her voice and style as we were used to hearing, but if you take the time to listen, Karen is doing something beautiful with each of them.
I'd also like to add that the arrangements and production qualities are of late-70's aesthetics, which alters the perspective from which we listen to them today. Had we heard this album in 1980, it would not seem dated, which it certainly was by the time of its delayed release.

  • @shihlin1
    @shihlin1 Před 5 lety +7

Some of these songs may not be hit material, but what's important is Karen‘s voice is heard in a new light. She has never sounded this soulful----and FREE !! Story goes A&M Records shelved her album back in 1981. I really believe brother Richard couldn't bear the thought of lil sis branching out on her own---he felt truly threatened ! What an Ass !
There's a soulfulness in Karen‘s voice on most of these songs missing on the Carpenters songs. Sure not all these songs are hit material, but she sounds liberated by the material instead of brother Richard's patented sugar-coated songs. Again, we'll never know the true scope what Karen could‘ve accomplished. A once in a lifetime talent !

    • @califtom
      @califtom Před 4 lety +3

I don't know if they were hit material or not but its a thoroughly enjoyable album. "Truly You" is fantastic and "Love Making Love to You" is a great song too. God only knows what Karen might have done had she broken free of Richard and gotten together with one of the many producers dying to work with her like Quincy Jones. They were more than happy to ruin her chance at a solo career if it meant keeping her around. Karen had so much music left to give and without question would have had a renaissance in the 80's same as so many other 70's stars did like Tina Turner, Olivia Newton John, David Bowie, etc.

Carpenters were and will be one of the most important band groups of the world. I heard Carpenters for the first time in my life in the year of 1973, when my english teacher who lived in New York City returned to Brazil to teach english in the school where I was studing. From that year on I always heard Carpenters' songs. I remembered very well when a friend of my living in Rio de Janeiro City (Brazil) told me that Karen Carpenter had died. It was a very sad day for me. It was a pity that a very good person/singer was died so sooner, so young. Any time I am here seeing and listening Carpenters' musics in the youtube net, and I would like to thank all those people who release Carpenter's materials for us all. Thank you very much. And to ending I must ask for to you all my apologizes because my english is not very good. (Barbacena City, Minas Gerais State, Country Brazil).

A singer can be like an actor. Be in the role being sung from. She was known as someone who put lot of emotion into her performance. But those may not necessarily been her own. So possibly also not this happiness.
Look at Kate Bush for instance. Very few of her amazing songs are actually about herself, or her opinions. She would read a book, and sing from the voice of the author or a character. Like no-one ever could.

These songs certainly hold their own within the Carpenters catalog. It's different production style, but it does work and any of these could be intermixed with the any playlist and not skip a beat. All of this is beautiful.

Love this album! :) If given the chance, this album would have certainly made it. Even though there are a few people who object to this album, there are so much more people who love and appreciate it. Karen's voice has so much versatility. Happy she got the chance to do this album. Wish she was alive to see her album released.

I feel like I'm listening to the voice of a good friend. How I miss this lady. I often wonder what her gorgeous voice would sound like in her mature years. "Something's Missing" is beautiful. I agree the arrangements are requiring her to sing in a higher register (which she can handle), but I miss that deep, rich tonality of her self described "money notes". From one fan to another, thank you for posting.

+maxiedoodle Before dismissing these tunes as uncharacteristic...they are not considering when they were recorded. Remember...Streisand recorded Superman and other songs very similar during the same time period.

I'm a head banging disco hating musician but KC could song the phone book off key and STILL do no wrong. So wrong she's gone. She would have covered a lot more ground musically had she lived. I can only imagine. It's like Hendrix. Before he died Jimi wanted to lay aside his trademark style and go towards a jazz style. Both gone to soon.

I admire her, I admire her voice, her music her talent, and the arrangements and compositions of Richard, Carpenters who have made unique. These songs Karen's album are great, you have to listen to it entirely. It really is a beautiful legacy of Karen, invaluable

#7 is an incredible song. Quite well
    composed. Multi-genre tempo and
feel. Melody lines cross nicely.. KC
shines!! So much passion inside of
her. #8 is interesting too. Dynamics
are enhanced by her passion, sense
    of timing, and pure passion.#9wow!
ANY sour opOnions don't matter. To
you only. Cynics already lost. This is
Karen having the utmost fun! Listen.
I'm sure she had more to prove here
as a soloist -to herself. And she just
    confimed what she innately knew....
    by completing these tunes -without
her brother...and turning them into a
memorable piece of her legacy: The
    comments -from those she touches,
are all that matter. Not mere cynical
    opining-opOnions! What a voice she
possessed. To think she studied the
    drums first! Amazing. Natural talent.
    Heaven sent. '+'

Man, these tracks just prove how much of a raw/pure talent she had!!! These are rough/demo tracks that were never meant for our ears and never cleaned up and she makes no mistakes and her voice is as spot on as ever!! And I love these tracks bc they show off her true range! She had a range like no other! She can sing way low and go way up into a higher register and use her head voice with ease! There will never be another talent like Karen Carpenter! And the actual album should have been released and it would have been a way bigger hit than anything the Carpenters would have done at the time! That is exactly why they shelved it and led her on to think it was trash but it was really great and they just really wanted to hold her back and not let her break out on her own! So sad, bc I think it was honestly a one time adventure for her! I think she would have went right back to Richard after and continued the Carpenters when he got better! So selfish of them and I think it partly cost her, her life it hurt her heart so bad for the people she respected and love professionally to insult her hard work like that! Makes me tear up to think if that happened to me! 🥺😢
