Watching this video brings back some good memories. I had just discovered the Melvins in 1993 when my sister and I went to see Primus and the Melvins opened for them. She said I just stood there with my mouth opened with a look of amazement during their entire set. I had just started learning to play the drums in 1992, so I was hyper focused on Dale the entire time. His drums were enormous and sounded like cannons every time he hit them. He also played really big cymbals and incorporated some percussive elements I had not heard before. The 2 ribbon crashers, LP jam block, and at times in the '90's, he had just the metal frame of a large roto tom (14" or 16", I think) mounted on a cymbal stand and it provides a very clear bell-like sound. I instantly fell in love with the absolute power he plays with, as well as the creativity of his playing. From that day since, I've been a huge fan of this band.
That's rad; thanks for sharing. Dale is in a class of drummers like Tim Soete and Des Kensel who have insane rhythmic power, highly distinctive styles, and all have the huevos to mount a giant floor tom on a snare stand and use it as a single rack tom. 😁
I gave him that Roto frame! My 90's Industrial band Hitting Birth was touring West Coast a ton w/em, 90-94ish. "FOUND SOUNDS"/ Metal stacked 💩 sounds RAD!
@Keith Bornzin , Very cool. I try to go see them live every chance I get and I keep hoping Dale would bring the roto frame back. I really liked the way it sounded.
That would be have been awesome. The one time I got to see them was at a festival, but I could only stay for 10 min before meeting someone. Unfortunately, but memorably, Rob Zombie on the stage next to them went over time by those 10 mins I had so the Melvins were just on their stage watching him with bemused looks and played some droney sounds until he finally wrapped it up... And that's when I had to go haha. Hopefully they will head back here one day.
They did a side show with Primus then as well (about 15 years ago, idk) but I couldn't afford that. Saw Primus at the same festival though, they were awesome
greatest band I should have go into a LONG time ago
it's wild to see them singing such weird lyrics in unison. Hooch with 2 singers is almost incomprehesible
This is the fucking perfect view and video quality for 1994 good job there’s not a lot of old Melvin sets recorded
They're the quintessential garage band that, no matter how seasoned and old they got, never left the garage. (I mean that in a good way).
Great video! I had the pleasure of working with Dale, Buzz, and Mark during this time with Atlantic. Great times!
Melvins starting to enjoy their fame around this time😊
From UCLA to Germany in a year.... MELVINS ARE AMAZING
0:04 - the song while they are preparing for the show: Pentagram - Bride of Evil
Thanks for this. Brilliant band.
This is true grunge. Heavier than heavy. It's a shame these guys aren't lauded more often in the 90s retrospective docs.
Amazing! What a show! I got to meet them one time in Denver while THEY THE BAND were loading in the gear. Talk for a minute asked for a picture so cool and down to earth no ego! Much much love!
Yeah, I remember seeing the flaming lips and they were doing the same thing. No roadies and this was in 1999!
The mighty Melvins! What a beautiful Noise.😍
I love the merch guy at the end. I think he's still selling merch, I went to a melvins show in 2023 and bought a signed vinyl from him, his voice sounded familiar. I was surprised it was signed, he saw me and said "that's right signed by King Fucko himself". Lol. he's a real cool dude.
Zapp ended up falling on hard times in Nevada, like so many.
Dale fn Crover, everyone
Sooo fuckin good. This looks amazing considering when it was shot and the sound is excellent. Like drinking from the Holy Grail and oh Mark D's hat. One of the best bands ever riiiiiight here.
I wish I had another pair of hands... So I could give this performance four thumbs up!
That was the first of many Melvins shows I've been to. I didn't know them before that day and loved them right away, when they started. My friend Nils, bass-player of my former band by then, invited me and took me there with him. A few years later he got depressive and killed himself - very very sad and another reason for me to write, play and teach music. Thanks for the introduction and everything, Nils! Thanks, Melvins!
Proper artists. Never disappoint!
Thank you for this reminder. I was there but not really there. That day my work was very stressful, tiring, my girl made me feel like she doesn't love me anymore and other stupid things that day just spoiled the enjoyment of a MELVINS CONCERT. But now I can catch up on that pleasure. Thanks!
Hey, that was a really sweet and throughouly human emotion you shared there. Peace.
Wow great recording! What a powerhouse. Revolve is one of my favorites, amazing dynamics in that song.
28:36: that drum fill at the start of sweet willy rollbar is insane
i can't wait to see Melvins and Bungle
Thank you , great footage great line up at the time with Mark.
I love the Melvins...buzz with the greatest doo of all time!!!...strange to me that they weren't bigger stars than nirvana....not to knock them...but they are more my wheel house than nirvana
Damn. 30 years ago. Dale in his prime. What a beast. Tight as f*ck this show.
wow how and why am I just now checkin these dudes out, fking awesome ! like what I've been looking for ?!
Hell yeah. The Melvins have ALWAYS delivered live. So damn great, thanks for posting. Coming up on 30 years!
Awesome video!
This is so crisp. Thanks for uploading.
Dale clovver, highly underrated, Melvins too.
Thanks for sharing!
Wow thanks for sharing!
Thank you
wow thanks for this video
Thanks for the upload! I could see them twice in 1994. Still one of the best concerts I have been... If I was responsible to choose songs for a "Melvins Best Of LP", these songs would be on it.
Some of the best music out of my home state.
One of the greatest bands of all time!!!! 🤘🏼
Love them, nice set
Thank you so much for uploading this! I love the mighty Dale Crover from a drummers point of view! I have seen some shows of them too, but it was around 2001 and later , in Prime Club, in Kantine with Tomahawk , and two Shows in Gebäude 9 later in 2017 and 2018. My favorite show was the one in Prime Club which Dale started with drum solo intro and double paddle playing! And from this point seeing that power live i fell in love with Dale and the Melvins! Since then i'm addicted to Melvins and Dale Crover especialy because i play drums too. Thank you so much!
amazing ending 😅
I remember when Dale used big drums, that was cool.
you can tell Dave Grohl totally copied his setup, even the height of the cymbals is the same lol ...
@@thewedge8823 YES true... and Crover has it's own style... Grohl not...
@@thewedge8823 Dale is a great drummer. So is Dave. Both have their own unique languages on drums. But the way they both hit the drums, its like the classic drummers of hard rock/metal like Bonham or Ward. That said, this is not "Dale's setup". This setup is as old as Bill Ward in the 60's and 70's. And I'm pretty sure he was not the only one.
Pretty sweet to be able to see this
Great sound quality here!
Dale Fucking Crover! 🤘🔥🥁🔥🤘
Holy shit this is awesome!
Damn this is heavy as hell.
DAT SNARE!!!!!!
The mid nineties.
Rocin it like it isn't no thang
The Almighty Melvins opened up for NIRVANA right before we lost Kurt, and the amazing Pentagram was playing over the speakers before they had started to play
Kurt started with the Melvins in Aberdeen and ended with them in Germany. At first, he did spoken word with Buzz on Guitar and went to a Black Flag show in Seattle. Then (as he gained more confidence), Kurt got Dale Crover to play on Fecal Matter's debut album. Krist Novoselic was known as a local Melvins "Kling-On" that Kurt hooked up with, and Nirvana was born.
Later on (in 1990), Buzz Osbourne hooked-up superfan/drummer Dave Grohl with the band. Kurt went on to produce the Melvins "Houdini" album. Skip ahead to early-1994, and Buzz is backstage listening to Kurt's disastrous phone call with Courtney Love. After the call, Nirvana goes onstage and plays "My Best Friend's Girl". It's dedicated to Courtney's ex-boyfriend, Billy Corgan,
WOW EPIC 😎
Best hair in music
No EGC guitar could ever sound like this.
Yeah unfortunately. I have egc guitars and Les Paul customs. The Les Paul’s win every single time. They sound massive
Surprised they weren`t bigger.
Very good quality !! wonder if this could be an opener for one of the last nirvana shows
If ever Nirvana opened for the Melvins ;-) But anyhow, I remember this concert as a perfect Melvins showcase. Didn‘t know anyone filmed it - thanks so much for this. I was blown away then, I‘m blown away 28 years later.
Nirvana's last concert was three days before this one, on March 1st 1994; the Melvins had been opening for Nirvana up to that point though.
That axe tone "mean"!!!... Solid state....good choice,!!!... Them Tuber's don't know what their missin!!!
Dale is a beast behind the kit
This is the show from November 29, 1994 in Essen not March - they didn't play all those "Stoner Witch" stuff in March. I saw them twice that year...brandmarked me for life.
Jam 1 @ 42min is Zep's Levee Breaks
🤘
Melvins NIN helmet Unsane are my big 4
What an incredible show, thanks so much for sharing it!
Do you happen to have filmed the Bielefeld show from the same tour?
sry no... not Bielefeld... but was often there... AJZ & PC69... good times & memories :-)
@@thoughts_are_free Indeed! Is there a way to contact you outside of YT?
@@gudrungugel6708 ja das geht... schau im DUB Video wer das gemacht hat... suche Google... und dann findest du mich ;-)
Oh man. This band is fucking cooking
I'm not choosing anybody, because they are all really good
🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Good background
Yeah, hard rock
The hard way is the best way
OOh. Wait. Alot of talent here
This is the band everyone ripped off to sound cool in the 90s. But unlike all of their imitators they still sound cool
They totally do. They legit still are kicking ass, and still just as good as they always where. I do wish I could go back and see them this young and raw though.
I'm going to find out
Pentagram as anthem. Yee haw.
Maybe. Surprised at how deep they are
Palm 🪴Springs

Oh fuck. Just hold on
there's no such a thing as Sludge/Doom Grundge dying

What the hell is going on here
Kind of slow
Wow, and just a few weeks before Courtney put out her hit on her estranged husband ...
Well it's definitely not Nirvana cuz Nirvana would sound good so it must be elvims.
