RECOVERING FROM A LIVER RESECTION (The first 6 weeks)

  • This video goes into detail about how I have been recovering from liver resection surgery. This is the story of the first six weeks after my surgery.
It's not been easy, but I have definitely improved. My body weight has increased, my sleep has become more restorative, and in general my energy levels have increased.
I have a way to go before I'm 100% but I feel I'm on my way.
This surgery was to remove a number of liver neuroendocrine cancerous tumours that had spread from a primary tumour in my small intestine.
I had my primary tumour and cancerous lymph nodes removed in April, and hopefully this liver resection surgery in August has removed the remaining tumours in my body.
    Thanks for all your support!

Thank you for this and your other videos. They have helped me enormously as I am 78 and am two weeks on from my identical operation
I was last in hospital 62 years ago and have ,therefore, been enormously lucky to have lived this long. Your videos have shown me about managing the Process of the operation and recovery from it. Thank you so very much and wishing all the best for you.

You could cautiously try to take some magnesium. I don't want you to get diarrhea (US) from it. It might help the feeling in your legs. A total of 2-3 gms over several days.

It’s great to see you looking so well. Remember, your life is so much more than cancer. Just looking back at your CZcams library, all of your videos are about physical health, fitness and strength, and reaching physical goals, even before your diagnosis. Perhaps it’s time to develop a possible artistic side to your nature. Can I suggest that you take a notebook and pen with you on your walks and document what you see around you. Or, take a sketchbook and draw what you see….trees, flowers, grass, insects etc. Get some cheap water colors and paint something. It doesn’t matter if you have no talent, give your mind a rest from the illness and allow it to just enjoy the beautiful sights around you. Dare I say leave the step counter turned off one day a week and just walk for the joy of walking. Get yourself a model car or aero plane and build it….something with complicated instructions that requires focus. Or try your hand at woodwork or leatherwork. My 71 year old friend who has been having cancer treatment since late 2019, recently found her late mother’s sewing machine, so has started making herself clothes with the help of an elderly neighbor. She has joined an art appreciation group that visit different galleries once a week. She has so many hobbies she puts me to shame.

Thank you Peter glad you’re recovering OK. Glad to hear you acknowledge the mental health component of all of this. Looking forward to future videos.
I just read one of my recent scan reports (I got a spine scan done to determine if neuroendocrine cancer has spread to my spine which it has not thankfully). The scan noted that “my liver is studded with tumors.” I already knew this information but I just think the term studded is a weird way to describe this as if referring to some kind of decoration! Doesn’t feel great to be reminded of such details but hopefully things will be ok.

I am so happy you mentioned the mental health side of recovery. After a month in the hospital surrounded by death and pain it really takes its toll on you.
The random pain in the abdomen and other areas has added a ton of anxiety to my life. I can totally understand where you are coming from about thinking the worst case scenario.
So glad to hear you have been recovering so well. I have for the first time been able to get my heart rate in the 80s, a whole 9 weeks after my liver surgery. It is a good sign that my infection is finally under control.

Hi Peter, I luv your videos. I lost my gallbladder many years ago and was told it is not a big deal but please believe me, it is! Keep to very small meals, NO OIL, and at least 7 hours apart. You need to take bile salts with your meals to help with digestion and if you don't you will become vitamin deficient. Please watch Dr Berg's youtube videos regarding gallbladder issues. I struggled with many health issues until I followed his advise. Best advise I have is PRAY for a healing, 10 years ago I was diagnose with an aggressive form of skin cancer and given 3 months to live. The shock, well, my Jewish Doctor recommended immediate surgery but I decided to go to The Creator / God for help. I dropped on my knees and earnestly prayed and asked for a healing. Then I decided (in faith)to wait and see what was going to happen. Well, I'm still here LOL Pray Pray Pray and receive your miraculous healing! Cant wait for your next video!!

Hi Pete - you are such a good lad & I can see that you are looking better.
At my age I've become my Dr's "most non-compliant patient, but one of his most deligjtful". I'll take that. At my age I've been thru enough so I decide. I do admire your determination & planning & sticking to a regimen Pete. I can sympathise with the "restless legs". Only had it recently - most unpleasant as is the heartburn. By no means major issues but niggling. Do you think you should push on to being breathless? I don't know. Any way Peter I must buzz as it's a P.H. for Her Majesty's Birthday & I'm off out. If I was in a different part of Aus I'd be celebrating it in June (even tho her birthday is in April). We love & admire our Queen. You're looking better Pete. What is that body of water named please? Looks nice. Lynn xx 🇦🇺

Hi Lynn. Thank you. I like the quote from your doctor! I agree that having your say is important.

Very heartening to hear about and see your progress is speeding up. That weight gain and better sleep must be such a relief. It must be tempting to push yourself but sounds as if you're being sensible. Hope the restless legs are calming down, a very annoying feeling! All best wishes 💪😊

I had been faithfully watching your videos, and I just finally caught up with your first post op catch up video, and now this one. It took so long because I was worried what would happen. Strange how we can be concerned and even afraid for entire strangers. But there I was, too chicken to watch the updates and meanwhile you were over there kicking Cancers A$& and taking names like a Pro! I'm so pleased for you and I know recovery cannot be easy and takes much longer to get to full steam than most think but you look so well and I'm so glad for you. A testament to your strength, your partner and family support and their strength, your doctors and nurses and modern surgeries and medical procedures. Thank you again for sharing your journey. Victory is near !

What a great place to go for a walk. Lovely to see you feeling better. Now you have to pace yourself. It can be challenging post op to let our body catch up with what we want. Healing …… slow and steady. All the best ! 😊

Hi Peter Glad you are recovering well. The trail looks so nice to walk through. I have RLS diagnosed by a neurologist a couple of years ago. The mental side of surgery is definatley challenging. I experience things that make me wonder if its still from surgery or something else. Facial paralysis was the worst of it. Nice to see you again. Enjoy the nice weather.

Exercise, sunshine and fresh air. I watched you vid on your obstacle course from last year. Bloody impressive... We did something similar while in basic training in the Air Force, but NOTHING approaching that! Like I said last time, you truly are an Iron Man. I hope the weather holds up for you. It's finally cooling off here in NC. All the best, and stay outside as much as you can tolerate. btw, can you have a pint?
