I've battled it for 50 years off and on, and what I've learned through it is to fight the negative words that come in your head with positive thoughts. There is so much in life you haven't had the chance to see yet, and it's good. Some days will be unbearable, but then others will be the best you've had. Give life a chance, and in the end you'll be glad you did. Keep singing Lanie, you have the most beautiful voice to share with us!

Lanie, your song moved me deeply. I am a 60 y.o. woman and I have had experience with depression starting in my 20's. I know the purple clouds. I know the confusion and wonder of what the hell is going on! F. Y. depression!! You are not who I am!! For me I did therapy and take a med. still (fluoxetine), but don't experience symptoms any more. We have a family history of depression and mental issues so part I believe is genetic. For me I learned that deep deep anger sets it off. First thing the therapist said was write an angry letter. First letter was to myself until I realized self blame was not correct. I did too much of that. I found out that I was angry at others. My mom, my dad, my spouse. I wrote angry letters to them and just let the words spill out onto the paper, then went to the therapist to help me sort through it. (Writing is therapy, then when you get to something that chokes you up, examine it closely.) I learned about what I wanted and needed. I didn't really know what I wanted and needed. When you are young especially you are trying to determine that. Trust and have faith. I had to soul search for this in many ways. I learned to communicate with others better about having to do what I needed to do. I learned not to deny my feelings and be a "good little girl," and do what others expected me to do. Hell, I didn't even know what my feelings were until I did the soul searching work.You have an extraordinary voice and beauty and being. Do what you want with it. Do what feels good to you, ask the Universe to show you your path. And if you make a mistake that is ok. You learn. Thanks for opening yourself up and sharing your guts to everyone. That is very brave. You will ALWAYS have your musical gift and I see you happy, successful and at peace.
Can I just say that DREAMS is one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME and I never thought I would LOVE it by anyone else than Stevie But DAMN Girl U BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES. I was 16 and about to blow my head off in my favorite meadow when some hunters interrupted me. Later on I learned that alcohol & weed only made it worse. Got sober at 25, in 1984, but the Depression remained. In 1990 I almost shot myself again, but a waitress that I was friendly with told me she went in-patient after both her parents were killed in a car crash on Christmas Day. I took her advice. I've been stable since 1990. In fact I went on to become a HS counselor. God works in mysterious ways, yeah? He gave me a gift. By the sound of your voice He's given you one, too. You just can't think your way out of it. Don't piss it away.
The LORD GOD has given each one of us gifts, they may not be the ones we want or wish we had, but they are gifts we are strong at. Gifts that as in your life give and help and though you may not see it first hand, they save. His words are truth and never change "I have s plan for you, not for calamity but for good and hope for your future" i give him glory that you found your way around or over the mountains the deceiver placed before you. Your work is doing something for children, at a time that their decisions can make or drastically change their futures. I pray my brother for your continued strength in a battle that never trully ends.
