- In this episode, we build a cabin in 1 year from start to finish. There was a huge wind storm that knocked over trees and I gathered the logs and had the logs sawed into lumber. All the straight logs I used in the foundation and walls of the cabin. The cabin is warm and comfortable and is enjoyable to stay in throughout the year.

Yes, many of the logs I gathered from an old logging site. I tried removing bark on several and it was almost impossible and I gave up. I think the cabin will out live me. Thanks for the comment
I like the way you guys built the cabin and it looks great inside and out. Mixing new school with the old school is how I plan on building mine too. Had three questions for you though, did you allow time for your cut lumber to completely dry before installing it? If not, are you experiencing larger gaps since the wood is drying out after being installed? And final, what was the purpose of the dozen metal strips randomly placed on top of the roof before your shingles?
these are all great questions. I let the lumber dry for 4 months stacked with shims to allow airflow. Some of the lumber warped and i could not use them. Most of the logs were purchased from a logging site that shut down two years ago. I gathered the logs that were straight (12-16 feet long) as it is very difficult to install crooked/bowed logs. I had a few larger trees blown down in a windstorm, on my property, and they were the ones sawed into lumber or used as the base trees. The tin on the roof was used for 1 inch gaps between the lumber. THis allowed material to nail the paper and shingles to when installing the roofing material. Lastly, if I had to do it again, I would have milled the top and bottom off each log to have a flat spot to sit each log on the wall before nailing. It was very difficult to keep the round logs on the wall before doweling / nailing in place.

We had a really bad wind storm that knocked down alot of trees in Colorado. I gathered them throughout the community and then had them sawed. If I did it again, I would have flattened each side of the logs so that they would go together easier when building the cabin. Flat is better than round. Lesson learned. I am happy to answer all questions as this is how we both learn projects together

The woodstove is from and old hunting camp and it works .... I will have to replace it down the road. My upgrade will be from Sportsman Guide and they have a couple really nice stoves that includes stove pipe.
My friend made the portable saw mill a few years ago and came to the property to help saw a few logs for the cabin. His youtube channel is Aaronymous Unlimited. He has about 6 videos or so on how he made the mill.

Y did you put sand bags around your cabin
Erosion control. It helped with water runoff as it came down the hill
Why is moss placed between the logs
It is not moss. It is chinking/mortar and it is used to seal the joint between the logs to stop wind and rain from coming inside the cabin. It worked really well as I did an overnight at -16 below zero (F).
