Pico da Vara - São Miguel - Azores Hiking

- On our quest for the most beautiful hiking routes, we tackle the highest point of Sao Miguel. Pico da Vara is the peak of the largest island of the Portugese archipelago.
The path along the PRC07 SMI is not the most beautiful trail, as it simply leads up through the forest on a steep route. The views from the top are supposedly amazing, though. We cannot speak to that, as we ascended on a rainy day.
If it is wet, much of the path can get very slippery.
Access to the parking lot at the start of the trail is a bit sketchy. The route up is only possible through a gravel road, but it is possible for normal cars and does not require a 4x4.
To access this trail, you are required to fill out servicos-sraa.azores.gov.pt/d..., as this hiking tour is going through a nature protection area. It is not the most beautiful hiking tour we did on the island, but you can subscribe to not miss that one, when we post the video.
The form is only available in Portugese, but Google translate is helpful enough to fill it in.

I'm so glad you were able to continue on the trail. The forest was beautiful, and it looked enchanting! The mud didn't look fun at all. I really like that boardwalk. I enjoyed following you along on this one! 😊
Thank you so much. We were also quite disappointed at first, but so glad we met the people coming down. It would have been a shame not to walk up. It was windy, muddy, rainy... Yet the adventure was still fun and we had a great time.

Oh..no....and yeah! hahah the information is confusing, right? We sometimes encounter this kind of situation. Checking online is not tell all, but we have to face it at the destination. You are lucky.... hahah muddy, all right. 4:45 I would say one of master piece. The fog is playing out magical adn mysterious in the woods, I reckon 4:06 wow finally boardwalks and they look new to me 5:34
OMGoodbess, I would have been blown away at the summit hahahah. The Gusty and nasty winds at the top, but it is really rewarding for you both.

We found a few rainy days on various islands. Even more rain during our time in the Faroe islands. But that has never stopped us 🤪.
We will start showing some of these experiences soon. So far we only have a few pictures on our Instagram.
