Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the First Crusade continues with the aftermath of the battle of Civetot of 1096 ( • People's Crusade: Batt... ) during the so-called People's Crusade of the First Crusade and the battle of Nicaea of 1097 ( • Princes' Crusade Begin... ) as the Princes' Crusade began. The Crusaders continued moving into the Asia Minor and had to fight against the forces of the Seljuk Sultan of Rum Kilij Arslan in Dorylaeum ( • Battle of Dorylaeum 10... ) and after the victory over the sultan, the road to Syria was open, leading to the Siege of Antioch in 1097-1098 ( • Siege of Antioch 1097-... ), but the partial victory of the crusaders in this siege was followed by a counter-attack of various Seljuk generals, leading to the biggest battle of the First Crusade - the battle of Antioch ( • Biggest Battle of the ... ). In the aftermath of the battle, the crusade almost collapsed, as the infighting between the princes became too difficult to resolve leading to a Civil War like situation ( • Civil War of the First... ). Despite this situation, Crusaders managed to retain some of their unity and continued deeper into Syria, where they fought at Ma'arra. Unfortunately, that was the battle that turned them into cannibals ( • Battle that Turned Cru... ). The issues persists, but the majority of the remaining Crusader army finally reached Jerusalem and besieged it ( • Siege of Jerusalem 109... ). In the aftermath of taking Jerusalem, Crusaders needed to secure the city against the Fatimid counter-offensive, which led to the last battle of the First Crusade - the battle of Ascalon ( • Last Battle of the Fir... ). It was followed by the Crusade many consider to be the worst - the Crusade of 1101

With all due respect, the Hero who did the most work and destroyed two of the thre crusader armies and also captured Bohemond himself was (Gazi Gümüshtigin), he was a better general than Kilij.

It is a crusade on its own. As the video stated, it actually was as big as first and third in terms of participants but because it was a complete fiasco, western chroniclers didnt number it.

huge respect to great sultan and soldier Kilij Arslan i. he was always against great odds his entire life. captive at Meliksah's palace at Isfahan until 13 years old, he was only 18 when first crusaders arrived. In a region where he was a stranger and with very little amount of Turkmens at Anatolia at the time, he defeated big crusader armies at a very young age. Both European and Muslim chroniclers state that crusaders had bigger armies in 1101 crusade than that of 1097.

They didn't have the element of unprecedented surprise the first Crusaders did. By this time the precedent had been set, and Kilij knew what was at stake.
At the same time these crusaders had essentially nearly the same lacking knowledge that the first crusade had when talking about their oppenents and the terrain/route.
If they had known better, they'd have prepared more supplies, or even better taken the southern Anatolian coastal route, longer but more easily supplied and safe and once linked up with the crusaders states, they could have executed more thought out and well prepared expeditions.
Truly could have changed a lot if these groups (+-40k troops) would have linked up with the crusader states, potentially allowing the crusaders states to exist for a lot longer and bigger.

The journey to save crusader's hero while having Emperor's pet lion slain in the middle of story truely absurd.
This crusade is likely forgotten partly because of how disastrous it was and also because Richard the Lionhearted led the Third and became the most famous of all the Crusaders.
Also probably in part because most of the European chroniclers who would've otherwise written about it died/were captured

This is one of the most forgotten parts of the history. Congrats for making people learn about these stuff. Thanks to the Kings&Generals, everyone learnt so much about Turkish and Balkan history which are generaly overlooked.
We should also appreciate the fact that Kilij Arslan was only 22 years old during the 1101 crusade, and he was 18 years old during the battle of Dorylaeum. Kilij Arslan is a forgotten Turkish hero in my opinion.

Let's be honest here, Crusade of 1101 is basically the real life equivalent of anime redemption Arc for Kilij Arslan
It was more a comeback than a redemption. Out of 4 parts of the crusade, him and his allies destroyed 3. The people's crusade was destroyed, as well as the two last expeditions.
Only the prince's crusade beat him, thats a pretty good win rate.

He died a year later in Ramla. He was the son-in-law of William the Conquer and also was the father of the future King of England Stephen.
Kılıç arslan is indeed underrated one of the greatest commanders in history, wiped out heavy crusader forces with little manpower.
He defeated an undersupplied, unprepared, multilinguistic, divided, disorganized foreign host led by an incapable fool in his home territory. If he didn't win, he would be an idiot.

Anatolian Seljuks were basically in a civil war during first crusade. Ridwan of Aleppo, Danishmendids and Kilij Arslan were basically in war prior to this crusade.
He literally died in a war against Ridvan six years after this crusade. Here they were temporarily allies.

The Crusades of 1101 were wars of great defeat that Europe wanted to ignore. The Seljuks destroyed the 3 crusader armies, which were much larger than themselves, one after the other. The crusaders would see such a disaster in the Second Crusade and in the battles with Baibars.

Nice overview. I appreciated that this synthesis did not fall into the usual trap about the "feeble" Lombards. Impulsive? Certainly. Strategically illiterate? Looks like it. But it still was a large, mostly infantry contingent that managed to travel thousands of kms into alien lands and ended up resisting for 3-4 days under enemy archers' volleys before being crushed. This said, the amount of persistent, repeated mistakes crusaders made, wave after wave, beggars belief. Kilij Arslan was an impressive leader, no doubt.

Imad al-Din Zengi was born in 1085, his father Aq Sunqur al-Hajib died in 1094, so Ida of Formbach-Ratelnberg, in the Crusade of 1101, being Zengi's mother is chronologically impossible. It's more likely that she, along with most of the army, was killed in the battle, as that was what was reported by Ekkehard of Aura, who actually met survivors of the Crusade of 1101.

I really wish it was officially known in the histories as "the Worst Crusade". More things need be known by the title as "the Worst".

Fascinating video. Hope you will continue with another series directly into the Second Crusade. Also, would be interesting to see a video on the Byzantine reaction or thoughts as to the result of the Crusade, as opposed to their thoughts at the outset (as depicted in previous video). Why didn't they attempt to more adroitly use the massive Western forces (20-50 thousand troops being enormous for this time) to reconquer the Byzantine heartlands of Anatolia?

I am from the city of Heracles Cybistra where one of the battle took place. I remember many remnants of the battle found on a field near the city in 2000; swords, shields and skeletons.

A small amount of coordinated effort, a pinch of humility, and a whole lot more professional scouting would have made this something else entirely.
Same goes for the muslims during the prince's crusade. The muslims were divided and foolish, had they properly used their might together no crusade would have ever worked.

You know it went bad when westoids didnt give it a number but simply called it by the year it happened. As the video stated, this crusade actually had about same crusader participant as first and third crusades.
Kudos to the great Turkic warrior Kilij Arslan. He did underestimate crusaders in first crusade but he certainly more than avenged it in 1101.

Your claim makes absolutely no sense... It wasn't given a "number" because it is considered part of the first crusade, and was comprised of three different expeditions whose aim was to secure the successes of the first crusade, hence their name in modern historiography : "the Succouring Crusades".
Subsequent crusades didn't go that well either (though a couple were successful), yet they were also given numbers.
What are "westoids" by the way ? The West is a cardinal point, anyone could be a "westoid" relative to anyone else.
Maybe you meant to say "European".

1- Westoid isnt European. It is Western/Central European. Byzantines, Balkans or Russians arent westoids.

You can classify crusades however you want. It has also been classified ''the crusade of the faint hearted''.
Video explains westerner historians traditionally mark the end of first crusade with the battle of Ascalon. So the traditional view is this crusade was something seperate. ''Crusade of 1101''
Westoid historians neither classify this crusade under the first crusade (in order to not damage the reputation of it) nor number this one.
3- Militarily only second crusade was as big a blunder/fiasco as this one. Funnily, due to the same reason as the 1101 one, Seljuks. This time Kilij Arslans son, Mesut I.
However second crusade was led by German Emperor and Frankish King. Being the first crusade that kings/emperors were the leaders of.
Due to that it was already impossible to downplay its importance like this one.

Mighty Kılıç Arslan a Warrior, a general, a Sultan. He is extremally underrated. Turks entered Anatolia literally 30 years before the events of this video. They didn't have enough population, they didn't have enough horses because of constant warfare (step warfare requires horse switches because of all that feigned retreats and circlements) and they had been beefing with pretty much all their neighbors. Even in all that chaos how many crusader armies didn't reach levant because of his skill as a general? How much time did he buy for Muslim counteroffensive? We are really proud of him in Türkiye.

@@rayhankhan8992 as a military leader, probably Kılıç Arslan was better but Saladin was an incredibly charismatic and gifted political leader. I don't think they are in the same categories as rulers as they simply ruled over and lived in different societies. we were fortunate to receive them both in those times of trouble.

K&G how about some videos about the Turk vs Russian history? I always thought that relationship was fascinating albiet very violent and has a lot of importance into the modern day as the relationship is not well known in the west especially in the USA.
Edessa, Antioch and Jerusalem was already taken anyway. No need to talk about 1101 campaign (!). I guess the western historians thought so. This is the only detailed documentary I could find about the campaign. 👍

A moment of silence for the army at 16:30. They were unlucky enough to give battle to a nomadic horse archer army in open flat plateu. Meaning if you don't have bir cavalry ratio in your formations, you're basically turtles crawling around to be harrassed by Turkish alps.
Kılıçarslan is the most underrated and unspoken genius leader in history. Even watching this video is make me proud of my great ancestor. I wish someone made a TV series about his life and name it The Crusader Slayer. I would definitely watch it million times!

Kılıçarslan had a very hard life. He lost his father when he was a child and became a prisoner for so long. He managed to escape only to find himself ruling a barely existing Sultanate and fight the heavily armored murderers with extreme numbers. He was still a very young man doing all these stuff. Even though what he suffered through he kept fighting against the enemies from all sides. He is the man who saved the entire muslim world. Türkiye exists thanks to him.

She was killed in battle, although we don't really know for sure. Later European legends claim she became part of a harem.

Furthermore, Zengi was likely born before 1101- he would have been around 14 years old by 1101. However, anything is possible as the Sultanate of Rum did not leave good records. Everything we have is from Europeans and their fantasies.
