- Nickelodeon Japan was launched in November 1998, and later closed down on the 30th of September 2009, due to declining viewership. There has been a lot of debate over how it shut down.
Videos online differ from each other and it's caused a bit of a debacle over which one is real, and which one is fabricated.
This video is recorded from SKY PerfecTV. The Spongebob video is recorded from Hikari-one, which cut the channel off a day early. So both of those could very well be real.
This video started circulating around July of 2016, @Tirgo69 is believed to be the original uploader. Statements from him claim that a user commented on their original upload - saying that they faked this video as a joke, and that it wasn't meant to be seen in public. This user was named Tatu according to the LMW article.
However, Tirgo has said he remembers more being to this upload. Revision histories of the Lost Media Wiki article say that on this upload was the tail end of MLAATR, then the Nickelodeon 'Dinosaur' ident in full, then to a short called 'Those Scurvy Rascals', then to a Nickelodeon 'Song' ident, then to another animated short called 'Biggy', then a bumper into 'Bull and Red' (which is the short a fragment is shown in this upload).
This starts to match where this upload continues off, the short ends and the Dinosaur ident is played, cuts off midway through because the channel is unavailable.
Something to note is that the same user who commented on the video saying this was a fake, also uploaded this video in response: • Nickelodeon Japan shut...
I've still to get in contact with Tirgo in regards to this video's origins, but I got in contact with Tatu about this and they have cleared some things up.
- This recording is real. It wasn't supposed to be put online. Tatu has mentioned they have shared a piece of work to someone before (I'm going to guess it was the closedown), they told them not to upload it online, but this person ignored them. This could be something completely unrelated, but I feel it's useful information to bring into light.
- This recording was streamed once by Tatu, on a Japanese live streaming service called 'Nico Nico Live Broadcast'. Tatu believes this recording surfaced online because it was a recording of that live broadcast.
- Tatu has made a fake shutdown video before (with footage of this recording) and had posted it on Twitter, where now the account and data is unrecoverable. Whether that video was the same as the Nickelodeon Arabia 'Color Bars' video linked above, I'm not sure. But Nickelodeon Japan has definitely used their set of idents in the past.
- Tatu doesn't recall sending a comment in the original video asking for it to be removed because this was fake. They think it might be an impersonation account, or an account coincidentally with the same name.

It's possible they could have retracted the claim, or this was another upload of the shutdown that was unlisted. This is how I remember finding this video and downloading it. An upload of this titled 'Nickelodeon Japan Shutdown [HOAX]', unlisted, on a CZcams playlist with Nickelodeon Japan videos. If this was unlisted, it could very well be one of the victims of the July 2021 purge of unlisted videos from before 2017, set to private.
This recording is part of a set of Nick Japan recordings that according to Tatu, cannot be shared. I'm not going to remove my upload of this as it has already spread around online for it to be easily wiped, but in respect of Tatu's wishes, I will not be delving into this further.

@@fttcec Over here, you would have still seen the splat. We didn't adopt the 2009 logo until early 2010, and Nicktoons and Nick Jr retained the old logo for a few months afterwards before they were rebranded as well.

for those who dont know the spongebob shutdown was confirmed fake by the lost media wiki and this one is pretty much the real deal since

the spongebob one is real because this comment on the lmc page: As far as the first and third shutdown videos goes, they are most likely real. They were uploaded or confirmed around the day the network shut down (September 30, 2009), plus, there are unique MTV Flux and SpongeBob trailers/idents shown on the first one (which was uploaded on September 29, 2009 on Nico video and includes a description that suggests that the uploader had no intention of baiting people), and the third one features credits to a short that people had almost never heard of. The only way the third one could be fake could be if the uploader had actually edited the video of Bull and Red from their Nickelodeon Arabia rip (which was uploaded by the same one, and is the only known copy on the web) to remove the logo, and had stolen the dragon bumper off another upload by crew members who worked on the bumper (such as most commonly found on Vimeo). (besides, just because there are blog posts that confirm the dragon eating the pill as the last image doesn't mean the uploader couldn't take advantage of that and place part of the ident with the end credits of a cartoon that in reality never aired at that time on the network) Oh, I forgot, there's also the UI (user interface), that I find hard to believe the uploader actually created by themselves. (there's this screenshot of the channel unavailable message here: blog.livedoor.jp/domo44/archives/1190102.html but there's also the EPG for which there's no exact known screenshot as of speaking, for it to be used for the video)
As for the second shutdown video. First of all, it could be possible that the chicken bumper was taken from one of the aforementioned vids (with the uploader plastering over it the Nick Japan logo). Heck, there are even people who say that the Japanese subtitle under the logo doesn't appear till most of the screen goes black, though I'll need to examine it more to find that out (maybe the fact the girl's skirt is behind the logo at some point can help, though even then, it's hard to tell). Also, the logo appears even after the screen goes black, which is very weird. Then there's the fact the sound can be heard on said screen before the color bars show up. And the fact that the color bars don't fill the entire screen (as a matter of fact, the logo is slightly higher in position than the former) is very fishy. At the very end it immediately cuts to static, with absolutely zero transition. Btw, did this channel ever air in analogue?

Technically the dinosaur one and the SpongeBob one can both be real. This is because the dinosaur one's closedown message was from the cable box, not the channel itself. Thus, the provider of the person who recorded this one cut the channel off early, and the provider of the person who recorded the SpongeBob one didn't do that, so they let it fall off the air to the color bars directly. I could be wrong of course, but it is possible that both recordings are real.

The credits are from an very obscure show that Ant Blades (who also worked on the recent It's Pony on Nick) also did a show for Nick called Bull and Red. Don't know the premise or if we can watch any episodes. PixelAnimator says that some person got in touch with Blades and Blades confirmed the show is real.

They're both real, just this one cuts off early because Nick, for whatever reason, decided to end the channel on digital cable boxes first (hence the error message roughly translating to "This channel does not exist. P007". The SpongeBob one was likely recorded on OTA/analog TV.

Clearly, closing the channel was in the plans for some time as they were consistently getting lower viewers. This is not the actual closedown, the TV provider obviously shut the signal off here early, considering the fact that message is clearly from the EPG and not the channel itself.
@Lenny Cormick It's one that was shown on Nick Arabia. It has a girl with the nick logo by her, she falls up (?) and a chicken clucks and then all of these feathers are on-screen and the Nick jingle plays in a farmy tone. It's one of two fake shutdowns because it was on Nick Arabia.
