Pink Floyd's album ANIMALS is a critique of capitalism. It's their reaction to George Orwell's book "Animal Farm", that is a critique of communism.
The 3 main songs of the album are in order:
"Dogs" that represent corporations and business people, described as backstabbing sociopathic egoists.
"Pigs" who represent politicians and politics, described as complete fakes.
"Sheep" -> us, the common people, described as docile, compliant fools, meek and obedient.
Though in the end the sheep rebel against their overlords and kill them. (Happens in the song "Sheep".)
Those three songs are bookended by the two parts of the short ballad "Pigs on a Wing (Part 1 & 2)", which is about people should actually look out and care for each other, and thus works as the positive, optimistic counterpoint to the other 3 angry songs on the album.

Animal Farm isn't a critique of Communism, its a critique/allegory for Stalin's regime specifically. Orwell himself was a socialist who fought with Marxist rebels in Spain in the 1930's and saw firsthand how Stalin betrayed them.

Calling it just a critique of communism is rather superficial. However I just wanted to keep it short and not write an essay about the themes and motifs in Animal Farm under a reaction video to a PF song on youtube. :) But I appreciate your comment!

It's great to see you younger generation appreciate the great music that came out in the 60's,70's, the music I grew up on. It's probably the 2 best decades ever that rock songs were composed. Roger Waters was typically known for writing songs on the darker side and Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath. Somebody has to. Can't have all love songs.

Pink, this was a great reaction! Thank you. I'd like to address something you said. You stated that this wouldn't be a go to song for you. You're right on the mark, but you've got to understand something. Back in the day, it was albums, not singles. Except for the radio pop, and especially with prog rock bands, you listened to complete albums. Dogs is not a single to go on your mix playlist. It's only part of a 40 minute piece of work. 70s Floyd, Yes, Genesis, and the likes are albums meant to be enjoyed as a whole. Good exploration!

This tune is the essence of Pink Floyd. Taking the listener on a journey, or telling a story about the realities of life. And all the while as the listener is completely absorbed into trying grasp the meaning of what is being conveyed. One can almost lose track of the masterful music that helps paint the picture of what the listener is offered. Coupling the captivating material with the tremendous musical artistry is what puts Pink Floyd in their own class. Pigs, and Sheep should follow this number.

Roger wrote this pre-Reagan, pre-Thatcher (you want to know what he thought about Thatcher, listen to his albums in the 80's and the Final Cut), and he knew what it was about. He knew what that kind of selfish greed, that fetishization of success no matter the cost, would lead to.

Yay! My favorite PF song from my favorite PF album and both in my top 5 of everything. Roger's lyrics, though dark, have never been better and Dave's guitar was never more expressive. Every song on this album is tied in with the others though. Based on Animal Farm.

This album seems like it was written for exactly what is going on in this country today. Especially "Pigs". Another good one, Pink!

"Dogs" (originally composed as "You've Got to Be Crazy") is a song by English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released on the album Animals in 1977. This song was one of several to be considered for the band's "best of" album Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd.
Fitting into the album's Orwellian concept of comparing human behavior to various animals, "Dogs" concentrates on the aggressive, ruthlessly competitive world of business, describing a high-powered businessman. The first two verses detail his predatory nature - outwardly charming and respectable with his "club tie and a firm handshake, a certain look in the eye and an easy smile", while behind this facade he lies waiting "to pick out the easy meat...to strike when the moment is right", and to stab those who trust him in the back. Subsequent verses portray the emptiness of his existence catching up to him as he grows older, retiring to the south rich but unloved: "just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer", and drowning under the weight of a metaphorical stone.
The final verse explores a number of aspects of business life and how it compares to dogs, for example taking chances and being "trained not to spit in the fan", losing their individuality ("broken by trained personnel"), obeying their superiors ("fitted with collar and chain"), being rewarded for good behaviour ("given a pat on the back" [Incorrectly "given a seat in the stand" in original LP liner notes, corrected for CD liner notes!]), working harder than the other workers ("breaking away from the pack") and getting to know everyone but spending less time with family ("only a stranger at home"). Recommended by a friend of Roger Waters named Joel Eaves, this line was personal to him as he was split from his family at infancy, being "broken away", as he put it. He later joined the Air Force squadron known as "Wolfpack", which directly inspired the implementation of this line. Every line of this verse begins with the words "Who was", which prompted comparison to Allen Ginsberg's poem "Howl". However, Waters has denied the Ginsberg poem was any influence on his lyrics. Instead, these lines can be seen as subordinate clauses to the lyric line that precedes them ("And you believe at heart everyone's a killer/Who was born in a house full of pain/Who was [etc.]").

I've watched several "so and so reacts" channels, and yours is my fave. You put effort into your analysis, your voice is soothing, your reactions aren't over the top and carry the authenticity that goes way beyond small talk. You have such a genuineness about you, I hope this youtube channel thing turns out to be more rewarding than you ever thought it could be. By the depth of your reactions so far, it seems that way. Much love, and thanks.

YESSSSSSSSSS finally! - Now that you've done dogs, you HAVE to do the rest of the album.
Dark Side of the Moon is one of the greatest albums ever written, however, Animals is Pink Floyds greatest album. Always so overlooked due to the long songs.
Pigs, Dogs and Sheep are 3 categories of people in the world based on the novel Animal Farm.
In each one, they take you through what it feels like to be one of those people, and how the others see you.
In short, Pigs are the politicians, CEOs etc. Dogs are the salesmen who are trying to climb the endless ladder, and sheep are the people who are trodden upon.
