      Sorry, I love your Jin-vlogs, but no dog is gonna make me stop. Cycle @ 22+km/hr, the lazy fawkers won't bother chasing. But for everyday touring, mount a 1000ml plastic drink bottle on the handle bars, use it as a repository for an 0.5m long piece of bamboo/dowel etc. When a canine fawker challenges you, whip the baton out and wave it in fawk-face's direction. You don't have to hit the cur, just return the threat. Dogs don't own the road, some of the have a mongrel-opinion that needs correction... and I've been cycling past them for 30+ years.

    Ah, that is genius. The stop and stare down. Most of the time I just ride away. If they are really crazy dogs, 99% of the time a squirt from the water bottle is enough. There was this one rural farm dog that just would not give up. When I went to college, my assigned dorm roommate says, "I lived on that road, that was my dog! He hated bicycles!" gee thanks... :)

    • @BillynBertie
      @BillynBertie Před rokem +1

      It's the stopping that solves the problem. It is natural for a dog to pursue a fast moving 'object' and in the dog's mind, the bike is something like a running deer or wild boar. He really knows that it is just something that is likely to be 'fun'.

    Good advice! Its always best to stay calm, especially with a pack of dogs. I think the ones I encountered in Tibet were scariest. But Irish farm dogs are the smartest, they stalk and track cyclists as if you were a sheep and then jump out of hedges without warning.... I'd swear they just find it funny to see the cyclist wobble and curse.....

    • @Giannis_Sarafis
      @Giannis_Sarafis Před 3 lety

      Same problem in Greece. One time I couldn't pass through a dozen of sheepdogs. I usually stop for a moment, but this time, the only way was to pass through them following a passing by car, as near as possible.

  • @Ru556
    @Ru556 Před 3 lety +7

    Great video, as dogs can be a real problem. I have thought to do what you did here, but have always been going at a good speed, though I've changed one of my local routes because of dogs. I do think that the spokes 'twang' or 'ping' and us humans can't hear them. So, stop, and whatever it is that gets them going stops. Also, dogs do not know what to if you stop running away from them. They try to get you running and attack from the rear. For 95% of dogs, that's their only tactic. I saw an old man with a walking stick being threatened by a powerful dog. He stopped walking and just stood still. After 5 minutes or so, the just trotted off. Same tactic.

  • @CanadianSledDog
    @CanadianSledDog Před 3 lety +6

    Yes it really is that easy! Most people make the mistake of thinking the dogs actually want to catch them, but that is almost never true. Dogs are just compelled to chase things that run away. I travel with a dog so we have dogs running down the street to see us all the time. We often have to bring them back or they'll join us!

  • @bajaigo

    Good advice! Ha ha, a few years ago a big dog was chasing me, so I tried to outrun him and I crashed.. he caught up to me and just stood there - like he wanted to play.. lesson learned..

    • @aluisious
      @aluisious Před 4 měsíci

      Most of the times dogs are barking "why are you running away? I want to sniff you."
      Same way they bark behind fences. It frustrates them they can't interact with things on the other side. Open a door in the fence, most of the time they stop barking.

  • @kayasper6081

    That is a very interesting advice, thank you. Bikers and dogs not always go nicely together, I also have some stories about it. I mostly just try to ignore them and cycle on, but what you do - stop and stare calmly at them, might work better.

  • @albertbatfinder5240
    @albertbatfinder5240 Před 3 lety +2

    Very good advice. Once there is nothing to chase, most dogs just want to be your friend. Stop, keep bike between you and dog, stare, talk quietly, walk away.... don’t try to race them because they’re ALWAYS a lot faster than you think! Also, many farm dogs seem to have an invisible leash. They won’t go far from their home.

    Over the years I have come to believe that the dogs in my rural area are bored and want to play. What could be more fun than running with a human on a bicycle.
    There are two dogs on one of my evening ride routes that come up and run alongside without barking.
    On another route is a dog I dubbed "The gateway guardian" as beyond him is an expansive forest. He has a deep angry growl and I try to outrun him. The last time before I encountered him, I picked up a handful of gravel and managed to chase him away. I think next time I will try your approach but keep my water bottle handy.
    Years ago I did learn to bear my teeth at dogs and they would back away but never did that on a bicycle. I tried this when two huge mean dobermans chased me while doing photography on foot. Turning to bare my teeth stopped them cold but maybe it was the external display of fearlessness. Barring teeth is common in the animal world.
    I think most animals are opportunistic and will not risk a confrontation if you put up even a little push back. Except maybe for the psycho ones.
    One dark night while riding through Baltimore Maryland suburbs, I heard dogs barking, thinking nothing of it. But then they got closer meaning they were loose. I pedaled faster, they got closer and then I could hear their claws clacking on the pavement and.... and I could hear that they were dragging a chain behind them. I never saw them but wondered at what type of monster dog could break his chain just to chase down a human on a bicycle.
    My biggest danger is when they run in front of you and then you hit them. That happened once and I went over the handle bars and trashed my front wheel. I was a kid and the owner paid for a new wheel.
    I also thought about bringing dog treats, for the dogs that is. I myself prefer a mix of dry roasted peanuts and raisins :-)
    Edit Update:
    I just read your blog and has even better tips than the video. One commenter mentions just trying to make friends with the dog to calm it down.
    I need to try that with the Guardian of the Forest next time.

    한적한 시골길 아무생각없이
    타고가는데 갑짜기 짖으며 뛰쳐나올땐
    정말 깜짝놀랍니다ㅋ
    뒷모습보이는것보다 노려보면효과가
    있더군요ㅋ

    와우 저도 라이딩을 즐겨하는데 골목이나 생각치 못했던 장소에서 만나는 댕댕이들은 정말............................. ㅡㅡ;; 이런 방법들이 있었군요. 감사합니다 ㅎㅎ

      빨리 달리는 게 최고죠.ㅎ 시골에는 개를 풀어서 더 위험한 거 같아요. ㅎ

    어느분 자전거 여행기를 봤는데 개를 쫒는 초음파 기구가 있대요 미국 같은데는 큰 개도 많아서 위험할 때가 많았는데 아주 유용하게 썼대요

    if dogs are like these ones (sout asian ones I believe) then its not a big issue :) but if something like Greek Shepherd then...to stop is not enough:D anyway, funny video especially that stare! :D

    Oh dogs in S E Asia are the worst, I heard it was the leg movement on a bike that triggers them, some primeval memory about chasing wildebeest. Not many street dogs in Vietnam if you fed up of them elsewhere

    • @universewithme
      @universewithme  Před 3 lety

      There are lots of street dogs in Vietnam too and many other countries. I thought opposite that wheels is triggering, not legs cause a few times dogs were trying to bite my tires. haha
