As long as those hinges are INSIDE, it works well to leave them installed to finish.
Depends if hinges are hidden old style. Old style shows have take them off.

Very nice. Another idea would be to put up a couple of wood shelves where the coffee station is to break up the white and be functional as well as decorative.
I’m in the process of doing exactly this. I’m disabled so it’s taking me a long time but the difference is incredible! Your parents are lucky to have you! Blessings to you and your family!
The lowered counter may not have been a desk, but instead a baking counter. The lower counter height allows you to look down into the larger Kitchen Aid stand mixer bowl and also can be a better height for rolling out pastry in the home kitchen. And with no cabinet below you can stand closer to your work surface.
That railing is called plate rail, u put plates & decor behind those. Enjoying this video!

I love how your mom's kitchen came out. I have the exact kind of non-wood cabinets and painting them and not using that Valspar primer made my paint come off quickly especially around my cabinet hardware. I also have those railings up above that you removed. I may decide to do that too. Doing it under $100 is incredible. I'm always afraid of remodel or updating because of cost. You inspired me to do it without worry about money! Thank you!

You could paint the small trolley and add new doors so that it matches the room. Its just the right size.

That’s beautiful. I have the same kind of cabinets and didn’t know how I was going to paint my kitchen cabinets. Thank you so much my kitchen is black and white the white cabinets are going to make a big difference. You’re such a sweet daughter. ❤❤❤❤❤
What a great makeover! 2 suggestions- the coffee cart looks great, just needs to be painted- either white to be part of the cabinets or black. And the plant on top of the cabinets...keep in mind it will dry out fast..heat rises. To avoid having to climb up there so often.. put plant in pretty pot run a long length of yarn, cord or rope from the middle of the potting soil through the drain hole. then find a 9x13 cake pan with a lid.. cut 2 holes- set the pot on top of lid & run cord through a center hole.. then have a 2nd hole big enough for a watering can spout.. fill the cake pan with water..the plant will suck up water as needed. You will have to experiment how long it takes to use a whole pan of water. Should be at least a few weeks. Oh, another tip..lay wax paper across the whole top of the cabinets.. you'll be happy when you go to clean & just have to throw the paper away... because grease & dust rise too. Can't wait to see your next project.

The only thing I would do to this beautiful kitchen, is change out the "boob" light over the sink area. That is very dated. Loved seeing this transformation.

You can always chalk paint the little rolling cart to match the baskets or a terra cotta look. It fits the space so well.
The plate railing you removed above the stove is for storing decorative or seasonal plates. It's about $25 for a 4 foot piece. You might try to sell the pieces on marketplace.
A small green wreath (faux eucalyptus maybe), hanging from a ribbon, would look cute in that space you created above the stove!

I can watch this all day long …. 😊 I think I would have left that shelf open over the stove for some cute canisters or something. That coffee ☕️ station looks great. Love the picture, but I hate that plant. It reminds me of the 70’s, everyone had that same plant in the same basket.

Wondering a few things:
Did you pull off the wallpaper or prime & paint right over it?
How do you reach the plants so high up to water them regularly?
The metal stove hood: It gets greasy & dirty pretty easily, so how is the primer & paint for scrub-cleaning?
How many gallons of primer & paint did you use? 2 coats of paint would be needed.
A gallon of paint or primer is $70 + tax up here in Canada, so it would cost a few hundred on primer & paint alone but still worth it for such a transformation.

Absolutely beautiful!!!! I would love to do this in my kitchen! Were the walls wallpapered? If so, did you remove it or just prime & paint over top? I cringe removing wallpaper because it is so messy, and my downstairs bathroom is completely wallpapered … which I am procrastinating changing because of the mess. My husband feels it should be removed before painting but if that primer covers it…I may tackle that bathroom!!!! Ty so much for sharing!!!
I have painted over wallpaper several times. To me it's much easier. I ruined the walls in 2 rooms trying to get that glue backing paper over. I can't tell the difference. The most important thing is filling in the seams. There are several how to videos. And I just followed those & it came out great.

Great job! I love the print on the wall over the desk area.
I would remove the countertop and cut it back where it’s level with the rest of the countertop and then add a 3 drawer cabinet since there’s not many drawers in the kitchen and those drawers can hold whatever you want or you could add a wine fridge or a smaller fridge for soda/water/beer or whatever & it could be great for grand kids too for snacks to grab in go but if it were me I’d do the 3 drawer cabinet and level out the counter top so it’s all even but I’d definitely replace the countertop and get something more updated or redo them with a different color.

Hi Addy! An amazing redo from the 70's to current date! I think the coffee infill counter desk piece was where the old fridge would have been and the new fridge was too wide. I am seeing this more in old kitchens where the new fridge widths are an issue. I'm not really loving the new fridge placement as it is right where everyone walks through the kitchen but that can wait for the day there's a big tear down and new floor plan. It's such a brighter and inviting space now!

I'm new and so grateful to have found you! I'm facing a similar update in my kitchen and knowing about that primer is gold! My cabinets have a weird, southwestern medallion in the middle of each so painting is going to take massive amounts of patience. I can do it if I don't have to sand every nook and cranny! Cleaning is enough - with a little sanding.
One thing I can't help but mention - your parents refrigerator is really cutting into the room. It's beautiful and probably new - perhaps they could sell it and get a counter depth one? I had this problem in my old kitchen and the change made a world of difference. Plus, I didn't actually sacrifice any space in the fridge! I'd say it had at least as much impact on the look and feel of the kitchen as refacing and adding functionality did.

Everything looks great!! In the past, paint over wallpaper was too heavy and pulled the wallpaper away from the wall. Who knows now days with so many new items available! You inspired me!! Thanks for a wonderful step by step makeover!! Love it!!

In the coffee nook I would remove that piece of counter top and find a piece of furniture curio or build a piece for the coffee station. She could even add some Mexican terracotta tiles. But I love what you accomplished ❤❤❤❤
