- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. There are less than one thousand professional race car drivers in the world. Business student Dion Von Moltke shares what it takes to make it in the highly competitive racing industry.
Dion von Moltke is an American professional racecar driver and international business student at FIU. Moltke rounds a race track at speeds that reach almost 200 miles per hour, pulling 4 to 5 Gs at every turn. He started racing karts when he was 13 years old, turned professional at 17 and has since competed in some of the world’s most prestigious racing series. He has multiple wins in Skip Barber, Grand-Am and the American Le Mans series. In 2013, he took home two first-place trophies at the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring and the Daytona 24 Hour race. He is currently signed for the full Tudor United Sports Car season as lead driver in the No. 35 Flying Lizard Motorsports Audi R8 LMS. Von Moltke is also a highly popular driver instructor, focusing on all aspects of peak performance, and has developed a coaching program called “Perform 360.” Born in Texas to South African parents, he lived in Sydney and Los Angeles before moving to Miami.

This is directed to all the teens who've commented below: I first got interested in motorsports by reading the biography of Tazio Nuvolari when I was about 15...I am now 70 years old and own two excellent race cars in which I've renewed my participation in SCCA Prototype Racing and Vintage Racing. Do not give up on your dreams...you may not have the skill or money to compete in the Elite levels of racing but you can find a niche where you will have FUN.
Thomas Hewitt I just want to rally 😢
Amazing! All the best for your racing career and keep dreaming.
Lil Leslie I want to rally too
@@romp4664 then do it
I know you wrote this some years ago but the problem is that if you don't have money, you can't even go racing so no one will watch how you're driving. That's the saddest part, many people have talent to drive but don't have the money to race even if it's just for fun...
I have realised this and I'm only 16 years old. I think I will never become a racing driver for a small team and I drive very good (at least from my experience in rental go-karts)
To the kids asking if it's too late, Pedora De La Rosa started karting at 17 and Takuma Sato started at 19.
Fives but they both suck
J.D. Lamping Thats really subjective, but the point of my comment was that there's still time to get out there.
***** That im not too sure, I know Takuma got a fully paid scholarship for F3 after succeeding in karting. Getting into karts is something probably self-funded, unfortunately.
***** That's true, but alot of kids in the comment section kept asking if it was too late for them and they ranged from like 13-15 years old, so i gave a prime example of F1 drivers who started late for their careers, assuming they have the funds ofc. Money talks, its really unfortunate but that's the sad truth.
Sato won the Indy 500 and Pedro De La Rosa got a drive a Mclaren after Montoya left.
All i got from this is that you have to be born to the right kind of money to be a pro driver.
ryno pb nah you really need skill too. This is why this guy is always crashing.
Racing a race car is nowhere near driving a prius to the local grocery store
Tell that to Lewis Hamilton
pretty much
lewis hamilton arguably one of the best drivers of all time came from almost no money...
I know this comment is 5 years old, but you do not need to come from a family that has a lot of money has many people have shown that you can make a lot of money even when coming from a family that is middle or low class you just need to work for it like you need to do for basically everything in life
Making a small fortune in racing, start with a big one.
I'm 29 and..well, yeah, i'm 29.
AtrolinK lol
Your story, really inspired me. Thank you.
I’m 12 you think I have a chance?
Money can put you in a race seat, but only talent can get you a win. Yeah I'm a bit jealous too, cos I'd love to have his job/opportunity, but it doesn't mean I have to be a Knob about it.
Listen to Eurobeats, you'll be a pro racer in no time.
just crashed my car listening to eurobeat
You must deliver tofu before being a grand master behind the wheel
The slow stig yea figured that out.
Running in the fuckin 90s
Guys, it's never too late if you have the skill. But it is too late if you don't.
your right
(EDIT):Guys, its never too late if you have the money. But its too late if you dont.
Dude if you can't pull together a couple of thousand needed to race, you are either stupid or lazy.
Rockstar Matt but you need a lot of money tho
B K a very song which kind of racing you want to do for a living, if it's one the one then yes you're right
Doing what you love is enough. Every true racer knows this and to be humble, this sport is too deadly not to be humble ... with God on your side, let your fear hide 🙏🏻🇺🇸🌍
If you are not afraid nothing can stop you
People who aren't into racing rip on the scene like it's an easy thing to do. Which it isn't, if it was easy, everybody and their neighbor would be competitive on track and have mad sponsorships. How many of you can actually drive a manual or change your own oil? Random knowledge question: What does AF/R stand for and how does it affect the combustion efficiency of an engine? Personally, I would do some real shit to be in this guy's position. The other's are just jealous because instead of doing 100 MPH in a Porsche, their doing 0 MPH behind a desk.
+Kyle Hershey #keyboardracing
It's really A/F R but the air to fuel ratio is how much air is used in comparison to fuel in an engine. If it changes it can cause power loss, lower fuel economy, and afterfires. I want to be a racing driver too but why would a racecar driver need to know about this?
RSXEEaznPEELOUT
I like how he talked about AFR like it is hard to know. That's just common knowledge
+DNF and like driving a manual is difficult, where I'm from its you get looked at funny if you only have an automatic licence
This may be an old comment, but I had to say my part...
People saying racing is just "driving around in circles"... This is true... But there are more to racing than "driving around in circles"... You ask how many of you can drive a "stick"... Here's one for you... How many of you can "heel/toe" shift and "rev match"? If I asked you, when you are going through a corner, where is the "clipping" point of the Apex, would you even know what that means? Do you even know what an "Apex" is? What is the racing line? What am I referring to when I talk about braking points?
All these things I mentioned is what is known as "race craft"... And that ain't even *HALF* of what it takes to drive a race car... I could go on and on about this, but I don't want to end up writing a race driver's handbook in the comments here... But yeah, race car driving *IS* "driving around in circles", but with a lot of other factors to go with it...
its my dream to be a race car driver. Even though i'm 29 already, I am still working towards the same goal of becoming a race car driver
It's never to late just tell yourself that over and over again and keep working and don't miss a minute of training and becoming better, not the best but better than before. Also I hope you don't mind me asking you this but are you Christian?
@@juanpablocastano2192 well, I'm at sea now working to pay for my first gocart, I'm picking it up in 2 weeks now. At least it's a start for me and my brother. No I'm not a Christian, I left the church many years ago, I never believed in that stuff
Lesson: Have rich parents! Thanks TEDx
Your parents could be rich as all fuck and your dumb ass wouldn't get on the go cart podium...Stop whining and go do something worthwhile.
I did. I came from a poor family. I drive a new corvette, live in NYC and travel. Look at my videos. What did you accomplish?
Lmao a new corvette is the definite way to tell someone's a dick. you spent $80,000 on an American sports car? congratulations .
Thanks. I'm really happy with it =)
AcaRa Bombshell it's called working for succes
A ted talk about a guy explaining how he paid his way in
Excellent talk. Explains what most people do not know about the competitiveness of what arguably could be one of the toughest sports on the planet. No question, regardless of the opportunities one has, the door can be opened, but the individual has to work to get through and work even harder to stay in the game.
All you ripping this "rich kid" -- If you've never raced a car on a track, you have no idea what you're talking about. Yes, racing burns piles of cash, whether it's yours or someone else's, but you have to have skills, coordination, and physical and mental strength to be any good at all. He's lucky to be from a wealthy family, but I'm not the envious type, so I say good for him. If you think just anyone can do what he's done, you're wrong.
To be a race car driver you have to be able to train your brain to operate in 10 separate channels at the same time. That Daytona pit out is a dangerous place and you cannot win a race from there but you can lose it there.None of the losers who are trolling this guy have ANY idea what it takes to race a car ad just jealous losers who will never accomplish anything in their lives.
If 1000 of the trolls on here tried to drive a racecar on a track to earn a drive it's almost certain that no more than one of them would be anything like fast enough and unlikely that even that fastest one would make it.
Dion the great! Fantastic guy and champion!!
Dion! Fantastic talk man! I loved it! Can't believe we used to race together in the kart kingdom. Time sure flies uh. Keep progressing and never stop!
Just start in the simulator scene. Offers are being made by manufactureres to really good sim racers as well. I think that's the cheapest way.
Jann Mardenborough.
Benny C You're mad dumb LMAOOOO
Benny C Every single GT Academy driver
I play a *LOT* of Gran Turismo... And I'm good at it...
Been playing Gran Turismo sense the first one on PS I... Have played every Gran Turismo that ever came out up to Gran Turismo 6...
Don't usually like Tedx, but I like this one.
That was truly inspiration thank you
Yeah I'mma play Forza
Its funny how everyone here is bashing Dion for his accomplishments. I was friends with Dion in middle school in Miami, FL when he was still racing go karts and he was one of the nicest most humble people I knew there. I wanted to race just as bad and wish I had the opportunity like many others here but that doesn't make me jealous and sour about it. Few people understand the pressure and commitment that it takes to be at the level. He's a hard working dedicated driver and regardless of financial backing he's earned his way to the top. Far more privileged people have attempted and failed, so yes money is a factor but end of the day its easy to sit at a computer and try and diminish his effort by pointing blame at something which is really only a prerequisite to success in the industry these days, but by no means a guarantee.
I came here to find out if he was related to THE von Moltke. Apparently no one else cares ):
Racing will make you a millionaire, if you start as a billionaire.
It's my absolute passion to be a race car driver i just love cars so much
Respect.
I'm 18 watching this in 2020 and I love to race 🏁 I play racing simulator Gran Turismo Sport which is the latest of their simulators following this year with the Gran Turismo 7 release so it's going to be exciting. But I like how this guy is confident and has that success mentality and that part motivates me.

Answer
I'm gonna be a professional race car driver someday...
You already got a good name for one. Hope you make it, train hard, consistently and get tips from best you can.
I am sad how people mindlessly hate over this guy's success..
my sisters do that to me ha
So, essentially, "Be the best you can be and do the best you can do.".
there was a guy in my country who never did gokart racing, only played with simulators and when he was 24 he started racing in WTCC sponsored by a real motorsport team. Lesson learned: nothing is impossible
Good job young man, many blessings in accomplishing your dream!!! I've been loving race car driving since the last seven to eight years now, soooo cool, right on!!!!!😄😄😄😄😄😄😮😮😗😗😐😐🙋🙋🏎🏎👣👣💦💦💫💫💨💨
Thought this would motivate me but it just bummed me.
I'm 14, but poor. Do I even have any chances? Lol
+Seyas Son Anything is possible, it's sorta not that inspiring hearing a racing drivers story when he HAD money to back him, skill is a HUGE part of it, but to be honest to even get the chance money is probably well... worth more. Can't get good at driving if you dont have a car can't have a car if you don't have money. Don't mean to be negative if it's what you want to do go for it, never know if you don't try, just try to be realistic about it lol.
+Hellcat287287 I drive Go karts a lot but it really doesn't count as a real car
Attempt to get into the competitive kart scene if you can. that's where a lot of drivers start.
+Seyas Son what kind of karts? and if not indoor what class
+Seyas Son I say your best chance if you're broke is something like gran turismo academy just get a wheel and if ur good enough someone will give you a spot in a race
You’ll see me on Iracing . I’m the #777 ;) , see you out there and may the better racer win , Godspeed and never slow down
wow ive been into racing of all types and never heard of him.
My dream too! Got nothing to help me excel at race car driving.
Closest I get to my dream is through game consoles.
Long story short, your parents were rich and that's how you got into racing
the skills were a talent embedded into his genes tho. just cuz someone rich doesnt mean they will have dope skills Money can buy u gadgets and give one leverage , but cant buy u the skills
This is my dream! a Race Car Driver!
I always dreamed to, money say the opposite. I discovered at age of'5 or 6 , i did go to little race track with electric cars, qnd i was in transcendence. I just wanted go as fast i can and love to compete with others. It was an emotional memory, all i wanted is return to that... i tested remote control car at 11 , also go kart i was good. But i was bad in school and i drop all dream to drive cars on track... after motocycle comes. Now im' 25 i will go in nz to learn english and travel ... but i really dream to start some races, i just love it
Dion, so happy to see the dreams you had at 15 & 16 are now your reality. Congratulations and many more successes!!
I am going to try to get this dream as soon as possible
I want to become a racer but im afraid my parents wont have the money for me. Is there anyway you can get money from go karting?
How many big names started doing street racing? Were there any drivers who served in the military (British army, say) before turning professional?
But he won both races, the Rolex and Sebring, even you have money the team owner will not put on risk his team and sponsors for some cash, he did it, for that Congratulations, that's a real man world
Where can I sigh up?
DAD: Do you think you are good enough to make it ?
ME: Yes, definitely.
DAD: Well i dont have any money so good luck with that.
people talking about how you need money to do this, are the same people that wont ever do it. start small, look into grass roots, budget and save. build the car yourself, stop thinking about the money needed and start thinking of how to get the experience. theres more than one way to skin a cat and there more than one way to hit the track!
My first kart race at buckmore when I was about 12 I beat all the adults in my race.......I have been dominant in more or less every race I have done since, although being fast in the Rain was DEFINITELY a learning curve for me....although I got the hang of it after the dismal failure of my first try. I actually pay a gym to get myself as fit as the f1 boys.....for fun and have a passion for the engineering side behind the cars. I often as I'm sure many do if I could have made it to formula 3 and maybe tested for f1 if I'd started early............trouble is....my job, even with the support of my family would struggle to spend 10k on a season of karting........so perhaps I was always doomed. What do you guys think?
I'm 15, poor and have an over protective was who doesn't like fast cars. Do I have a chance, or is it too late?
Most important factor: A family that can spend a million dollars a year on your career…
My dad was the Barrett of Miller Barrett racing. He was pretty pissed at this guy.
This kids just a benefacted gentleman driver
Sooo... Not to be captain obvious here, but did I miss the part where we find out what it takes to be a professional racer? Was hoping for more of a play by play of the nitty gritty on becoming a racer (ie: which series to begin with, raising sponsorship/being independently wealthy, rubbing elbows with team owners, etc.). Regardless, nice job presenting! Enjoyed hearing your story!
Sir Daft1 Well i was hoping for that too but the moral is to be passionate and to do the best you can because all the stuff you are talking about will come if you are devoted to what you love
I'll be a professional racing driver
Omar Nabil you need money
Good luck man! I hope you get what you are looking for!
Phew, do you think you're up for it? You'll have to swear off the frat boy life, you know?
Omar Nabil :] Good luck
I think you guys should watch the kid who won the Gran Turismo Academy. He basically played video games and got chosen lol
Me: g27, eurobeats, and a dream
They should've got a real driver to make a speech, not a stereotypical pay driver.
He's won the Daytona 24h and Sebring 12h twice then won at a tight street circuit. Paydrivers don't win races like that without skill.
Tell us more about your pizza-delivery job. Do you have to lock the doors to the shop after you clock out? At least it's regular pay, eh.
I am 11 and since i live in Singapore its really overpriced here and im not poor but still cant afford its about 6000 usd for a new cart and half of that for a used one and then on top of that you have to pay for memberships and maintenance of the kart as well as join a team
Immma go kart after the outbreak then hit GT ACADEMY
I’m 16 I have no racing experience but I have experience on gravel and dirt and I want to rally and I don’t know where to ever start. I don’t know what car I would need and I don’t know how to find a race I’m thinking about just giving up
I don't question your commitment or courage, but there's no way on earth you were up against the best drivers in the world.
Race Drivin'
Not having money doesn't matter in racing is like saying not having legs doesn't matter in running. How are you suppose to start running with no legs? How are you suppose to drive without a car? Each practice session will cost you 3-5k in parts and maintenance, excluding the 100k plus race car.
I'm currently 16 my dream was to become a racer but have no chance to become because where I'm at today don't have enough money for it
same here man :(
Raptor King I feel ya
me tol but doesn't mean we cant go out n try, get a Miata or civic or anything and just go out n race n have fun isn't that why we are all in this sport cuz it's fun and we love it
"There are a lot of upgrades that mostly rely on reliability which are needed. Like i said, racing its not cheap. And most of the money doesn't come from GETTING the car as much as MAINTAINING the car"
Ryan Moore what point are you trying to get across?
Hi bro I am 22 years old and I love car race but I don't have chance and I thoughts my slaf one day will a racer
Appropriate Ted Talk title: “Stroking Ones Ego..........oh and something about racing.”
💗
Well I literally was playing racing games and got inspired to see what it would actually take to be a nascar driver 😂😂😂
Why nascar it's crap in comparison to almost everything else
Racing is driven by money, this guy's parents pay racing teams huge amounts of money (sponsorship dollars) for a seat.. I don't doubt this kid works hard to be the best driver he can be but he got there on someone else's dime.. he had someone paying for his mistakes for him.. paying to give him more chances to drive. His only sacrifice was what?.. giving up the frat boy life? Giving up girls? (cause race drivers don't get girls right?) This speech about "pushing through adversity" is hollow and probably the worst TED talk thus far. I'll say it again.. he had someone paying for his mistakes for him..
great saying
where is that shit please.
Y really dont know how the sponsors really are there , but here the enterprises people sponsorships their own sons, cousins , Friends or clients.
Ryan Moore the adversity your comment brings me.. it's almost unbearable. The struggle of reading it.. you know.. I'm gonna do a ted talk on it so you can hear all about it. When I'm done you'll be motivated to succeed... and if you find you're not motivated.. I'll buy you a seat in a Daytona prototype racecar to make you feel you've accomplished something.
Don't sit here talking about conquering adversity when you've had a silver spoon in your mouth from day 1. That's the point I'm making. And since it bears on the conversation, I started as a homeless teen...now I employ 15 people and make plenty of money, from a business I started in my basement. Don't tell me how hard it was to hit a triple when you were born on third base.. don't wanna listen to it.
as always, you present a compelling argument.
I'm 12 and I occasionally go karting with my dad who does autocross and yet everytime I beat him. Only problem is even though I have the money and talent, I unfortunaetly son't have parents that are supportive of a dream that I have.
Is there any age limit to become a racer
Fia regulations says you have to be atleast 18
There is a way. If dads make it then there kids race and are just as good there is no coincidence there is a way to the top.
What does it take to have an ironed shirt?
"My dad has been supporting me emotionally, and FINANCIALLY" There is a key element in that sentence which is the answer to what it takes xD
Money.....
Money, physical fitness, extremely good fine motor skills, a feeling of inertia, and the ability to keep a cool head.
There are quite a few people in the world who possess those skills.....but lack the money. Lack of money renders all the other talents useless. Especially if you can't even afford the 20 thousand pound KArting championship fees
coolkid123456100 how much is 20 thousand pounds and do you pay that amount for each race.
its 20 000 GBP and you generally pay that per year in the top level of karting
coolkid123456100 20,000 US?? That's not that bad but it would be difficult to start at the beginning.
16:30 - "I earned my teammate his first win"... that doesn't sound much like teamwork.
A driver and a rwd car.
My dream too. Im the best video car games in the world
So basically you have to win the lottery of life. Be born into money and be good enough to even make training worth your while. On top of that, you need more luck than your average person.
Lol this guy drove straight into the barrier….. no excuses
I started off racing rc cars lol
NASCAR is whole different story.
And boring
*exciting
Elaborate
Racing has nothing to do with talent anymore its about sponsorship dollars. If you are halfway decent and can bring in the money you will have a ride.
It's never been any different. Early motorsport was literally full of people with big money. There were kings racing because they had the money.
NEWS FLASH: Dear America, hard work pays off.....nerp.......derp derp.......
Why so much hate for this guy?
I understand his parents were rich, but that money won't win him races.
Many people here are clearly not racing fans. I am a huge sportscar racing fan, and even i... the talk was interesting, it was fun to hear his story but... let's be real, there are so many other drivers that had so much more to say than Dion.
“Every dog has his day lol”
Always rember if your not first your last lol
You will never get there if you never try.
I have a Race Kart and I don’t race it. :(
Hi im 13 live in Portugal and i love racing my family has possibiliteis and i wanna become a pilot suggestions? :)
Start racing in go-kart and see if you are good enough to make it :)
+Adrian Romanowski i go a lot to go karts near my house and the owner already tola me im preety good but what can i do now? :/
+Pedro Antunes buy a you own race kart, and go to races
+Adrian Romanowski damn how muco does one cost?
It's quite expensive
Nice surname.
money
People, he mentioned that they own a big property in a sanctuary in south Africa, just millionaire can afford that, cape Town, oooh my friends, I'll see you later, I'm going safari at my house in Africa
I'm 13 and street racing in my parents car, I think I have a chance guys.
only at 13?
Most start karting at 8 or 9. I started at 16
I was really struggling to try to take this guy seriously
This is what it takes to be a Professional Race Car Driver.
Cash, Confidence and Contacts. The Three C's. If you are missing ONE of those, you will not make it. Notice I did not mention Talent!!!
This is how to be an amateur driver.
