I have seen too many service guys not doing the right thing. Overcharging for parts or telling you there is more wrong than what really is, or that you can't do it yourself or you'll mess it up. You guys have proved them wrong many many many times over.
    Thanks for Watching!

Ice water to test the thermostat was a pro tip. Not having to wait for the freezer to get cold and you can test the part outside instead of making sure it’s cold enough in the freezer section when testing. Thanks a million!

Bill, your videos have been really helpful to a layman like me. I very much appreciate how you don't assume a high level of knowledge and know that many of your viewers are attempting these types of repairs for the first time. It was amazing how difficult it was to figure out the defrost timer clicking thing until I saw part 1 of your video. Everyone else explained how you turn the defrost timer (without explaining where it was located) until it clicks, but they didn't explain that a couple of clicks later it's out of defrost mode, so you have to be sure to stop turning right when you hear that click. That was a key piece of information that is representative of the level of detail you provide. Thank you very much!

Your going to have to remove the back panel of the freezer and check the coils. If the compressor is running, they should be covered in frost. If the compressor is running and there is not frost on the coils, you have a freon issue.

Well, either way the freon system would need cut into. Then pressure checked for leaks. Unless you have experience in this type of work, freon systems are not your average repair job. But really the only way to be sure is with a set of gauges hooked up to the compressor. 3 Things could be wrong, restricted sealed system, sealed system leak, or faulty compressor.
Sorry for all the bad news, I wish there was more I could help you out with this.

  • @BillNewberry
    @BillNewberry  Před 12 lety +1

Make sure the refrigerator is not running on an extension cord. The refrigerator should be on its own breaker. Check the cord for any damage around the prongs on the plug. The run time shouldn't affect the relays. If there is, let's say, an air conditioner running on the same line as the refrigerator is, the voltage drop could cause damage. Loose wires will also do the same.
Let me know what you find.

  • @Utility68

You just saved me ALL KINDS of aggravation. I have that exact fridge and I've been putting an electric space heater in the freezer once a week (for a month) to defrost it and get cold air back to the fridge (procrastination and fear of repair bill). I could have used a flathead screwdriver and 10 seconds of my time to turn the timer once a day (well, twice...to re-start the cooling cycle). Just now learned this from you... did it... and the defrost heater fired right up and started dripping lots of water through the vent down into the fridge. Now I know what needs fixed and it won't be that expensive, and I'm sure I can do it myself. And if I want to procrastinate further, the screwdriver method works! Haha. Thanks a bunch, man! Also, your reason for redundancy was spot-on. Nothing worse than a teacher who makes the mistake of thinking his students know more than they do.

+5 is ok for the freezer, if you have more in the freezer the temp will drop and couple more degrees. If it's an extra fridge, throw some bags of ice in there to take up and much air space as you can.
Put the fridge thermostat in a meat drawer or something. The temperature may be affected by the opening up of the door to check the thermometer. They always read high if you don't have them in a drawer. take up the airspace in the fridge with jugs of water if there's lots of room.

Video just talked me down off the edge!! Had freezer around 40 degrees F and refrigerator around 50 degrees F. With your guidance, turned on defrost cycle manually and noticed heater coil did not turn on. Checked for continuity of heater coil and got 36 ohms (35 was good on yours). Removed freezer thermostat (placed in a cup of ice for 5-10 minutes) and checked for continuity. If thermostat is good I will order a defrost timer. Replaced defrost timer and freezer thermostat about 1 year ago. Refrigerator is a Frigidaire Top Freezer (model FFTR2021TW5) manufactured in 2019. Unfortunately frig has never worked well. This will be my last attempt before I purchase something more reliable....and colder. Purchased a "garage kit" for it too.

If the return line is freezing up, you put too much freon in the system. That means there's enough freon in the system to freeze the evaporator and all the way down to the compressor. You should decrease the amount of freon in the system, so only the evap is froze over.
Let me know if you have anymore questions.

You addressed my issue to a T, same fridge even and I appreciate the info, usually when I try to find info on something I'm having an issue with I find info on everything except what I need to know. I had just finished defrosting my fridge (coils) with warm water, so I will try to manually turn defroster on in a few days when they have frosted back over and go from there. Thanks a million!

If you are seeing lots of moisture in the refrigerator area, you need to check the door gaskets. Moisture on the shelves usually indicates air getting in all the time. The moisture in the air condenses in your refrigerator compartment. This would cause it to run all the time also.
Let me know what you find.
