I have never participated in any of the challenges but I love watching the videos for them and suspect there may be many other people like me so don't be too discouraged about there success. Dont let Lack of participation hinder this channel. We're just lazy. I built my kiln after your mud kiln , and use every one of my skills learned here. Love this channel . Those smothered black insides seem to be more highly polished because of their colour which highlites the brightness, not so much because they were burnished more. I wouldn't have the time myself to do those pottery challenges as I am too busy recreating the pots I find in archaeology when I have time, but I find those challenges exciting and the main interest of the spectators remains seeing you making them.

    • @AncientPottery
      @AncientPottery  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Thanks for adding your perspective. The black, smudged surfaces are actually more highly polished than any other pottery in this area. Although, you are also right that the color does highlight the polish well.

    In all the years that I have peaked at Utube today is the only time that I have seen your channel. Pottery, I absolutely love what you create. When I was a kid we used to help my mother dig for clay, and she would make mostly Eagles or animals that held special symbolism for instance for the native peoples. She was an awesome artist, but she never knew about firing her work the way I have seen you show, and not being able to afford a kiln she just quit working with clay! I think your channel is great!

    I've been struggling to find somewhere to fire my pots so lost some enthusiasm with the challenges and pot-making in general but still really enjoyed the videos in the series. If you're looking for ideas for next season for something different, how about some design talks? I'd love to know more about what makes a design one culture and not another, the main features of each style, how to ID a cultural style, that kind of thing. Most books I've seen are either really expensive or really inaccessible for someone at my level. A monthly talk by someone as knowledgeable as you would be fascinating.

    We are working on Cibola White ware, and we were hoping that was the next challenge you did, so we challenge you to make 3 Cibola white ware styles with one being an olla! We are going to pitfire ours in reduction all at once! its a friendly challenge I am proposing right now!! Any potters that have an interest? Perhaps we could just hashtag them Andy Wards Ancient pottery challenge? We wanted to make all of your pots for both challenges, but we have orders, and shipments and garden and family, and work, so we could honestly say that we choose our pieces based on the time we have,... but we love the pottery challenges and hope it may be an option for anyone who reads this! Thank you Andy, glad to hear you’re on the mend. To be honest I love watching your challengers as I learn the history and your choices are unusual and so interesting to see you create them. I’m still learning, so not able to join in yet. Being of European descent, and living in New Zealand, we are never introduced to any of this kind of pottery. I’m interested personally on learning to make ancient Celtic or European work, but there’s no one really doing teaching like you do specifically on that subject that I can find. So your methods are the closest thing to learning how any of the ancients went about creating pottery. So your resources are very much appreciated. @@marythompson9952 Sort of - the Cincinnati (and southern Ohio) area is well known for its clay. That’s why Ohio potteries like Rookwood, Weller, Roseville, and McCoy dominated the art pottery industry. We are basically sitting on top of an Ordovician-age seabed with abundant clay deposits. The information you have for each pot in a challenge is flippin awesome. So the challenges are important. What you need is participation. Ok….what about a 1 pot challenge. You wouldn’t even need to make it a replica. Just a pot or bowl, maybe a size, needs to be at least 5 inches across. Send a pic. I bet many of the people watching….( like me, ) have never even tried to make a pot. Then when the challenge is over( give everyone a time limit j. announce the winner. Whether it’s from a drawing or pull the name from a hat. Because it’s about getting participation. Then send a small “prize” maybe a colored pigment or a few paint brushes. Something small. I am a new subscriber to your channel. I have always wanted to work with clay. I will be retiring in early 2025, I plan on making a pot. I love the history also and will participate. Love your channel cheers

I actually did the one coil challenge, and made the ladle, too. When you remake the masterclasses I hope to be among the first to enjoy their content. After watching a ton of your coil technique (and more) videos I put that skill to use. The excessive heat and blaring sun really effected the production of veg in my garden. So I decided to make ollas using the coil and scrap method you taught. So far I have 4 of the 10 completed. Now, I have to begin the surface firing.😅

    I hope you do continue with the challenges, otherwise I will have to try some of your previous ones! I subscribed several months back and believe I have watched every one of your videos so far. I am doing some of the steps to get started, testing the quality of the clay from my property etc. Initially I found it to be too gritty with a 7% shrink and poor plasticity. I am levigating the clay now hoping for less temper. I am happy that you are feeling better and look forward to your next videos!

    I just subscribed because I've been watching so many of your videos and realized I hadn't yet. I wonder how many viewers there are like me who don't create pottery but are interested in all sorts of art and craft work processes? I'm unlikely to join in on a challenge but enjoyed the challenge videos.

    We have had a fire ban all summer. Hope to fire some before the snow flies but I've never seen a fire ban in September before

    Glad to hear you are feeling better. I posit the past few years has created stress in many people around the world and this does tend to take its toll when the body relaxes. I think your channel is really great and as a newcomer I have just started collecting clay. I thought I hit paydirt after a few very sandy collections, when I got a red clay and made a simple first pot but as it dried it cracked apart so I am searching for the answers there.

    • @AncientPottery
      @AncientPottery  Před 8 měsíci

      Add more temper (sand) to your clay to prevent drying cracks, also help it to dry very slowly. Thanks!

    Congrats on 100K & 125k shortly! Ancient style pottery reminds me of decorating the Ukrainian eggs I make. I love and learned to do their art of drawing on egg shells with wax & then dying them. Some of the designs/patterns are kind of similar to those of ancient pottery, and sometimes some of the colors as well. I love drawing or painting on curved/ rounded surfaces. Hoping your health continues to improve!

      Thanks! Yes, I can see the similarity to egg decoration, that rounded surface takes getting used to painting on.

    Maybe a good beginner's challenge? With a growing channel, there's a lot of newbies here. I think i speak for all of us newbies that it's daunting to junp into a challenge as big as the previuos ones. Maybe making figurines?

  • @terryfinley7760
    @terryfinley7760 Před 8 měsíci

    I like the challenges. I think it’s not that people aren’t interested…they just don’t have the time to dedicate to such a huge undertaking.
    Maybe you could just make it a one pot challenge. Make a video on one pot you make. Then, people could make their version and you could amend your video to show their work.

    I am asking this question here in case you don't see it on one over 2 years old.
    When grinding clay and temper do you grind at the same setting or is one a finer grind? Also can you make temper by firing ground-up dry clay?

    • @AncientPottery
      @AncientPottery  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yes they can be ground the same fineness. Yes you can make temper from dry clay but you need to get it hot enough, it might take a long time to get a bucket of dry material up to temp.

    Do you always paint on a leather hard pot ? Or can you paint on pots that have already dried before firing. I am confused .. thanks for input .

    • @AncientPottery
      @AncientPottery  Před 8 měsíci

      I paint bone dry pottery, but I always slip when leather hard. The reasons are that when slipping you are adding a lot of moisture to the clay and if it is dry that can cause the pot to crack. Also if slipped while still slightly damp you can polish better. And since the slip is clay, they will do better if applied leather hard so the two clays can shrink together as they dry.
