And spoiler alert, it's not pretty. History proves humanity has a barbaric streak and we're just grateful that today this torture device can only be found in museums.

There was a punishment where they put you strapped on a bed which had holes in it. They would put bamboo under the holes. Since bamboo grows very fast and is very strong, it grows through the body of the person and kills them in a slow, painful death.
Sleep deprivation is the most underestimated method of torture.
