Learning to use my new pressure cooker (Bennett Read Super Chef 6) - Overcoming some of my fears!

  • I have been very hesitant to get a pressure cooker for two reasons. The first has always been that the safety concerns with the pressure cooker were and still are very real - working with high pressure steam can be a very scary proposition for anyone and especially someone of my age.
    The second is the understanding the technology hurdle and figuring out how everything works.
    My kids got a pressure cooker for mothers day and after almost a month I decided to give it a try. See how I did with my little show and tell video.

    Hi, does your pressure cooker have a cooking function if so please do a curry in it.

    • @GaithreeDeviLuckan
      @GaithreeDeviLuckan  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Katz. It does had a sauté function so we will be able to braise them curry and then let it cook under pressure. Maybe we can try it with some lamb or even Zulu culls but I must practice more!

    • @BeautifulAshes1965
      @BeautifulAshes1965 Před 2 lety

      Yes, you can cook curries in it. I have cooked a Cornish hen. Using the sauté function initially and then manual pressure for further cooking.
      It’s a lot of trial and error and then finding right cooking times for each dish.
      Also great for lamb shanks as well.

I’m extremely nervous about it but admire you guys for using it so freely. I’m alone now so I won’t even buy one but that’s the way to go these days. Especially for you guys in Joburg with your hard water. That was an awesome gift from your kids. I love to watch your videos. Have a blessed evening. Sending love ❤️ from East London ❤️❤️❤️

      Yes even me, if I didn't have Pranesh around I wouldn't try it by myself. However the pressure cooker can be used without venting the steam immediately - we did it because we were filming. You can always do your cooking and let it to cool down completely before opening it. That way may not save as much time but definitely will save some electricity.

      It was extremely scary I won't lie, not knowing whats going on in that cooker, you can't even smell anything. You just sit there staring at it with nothing to do. It goes against everything you know about cooking. But it's a life changer. JHB is a stew nightmare, 4hrs by the stove fighting a beef stew.

    Unbelievable Mrs Devi you got one,I followed instructions and I cooked half of a culls fresh live chicken, I first braised it on stove then added it to the cooker and my results were perfect that included my potatoes, I also did sugar beans, and I did a pot of soup, I'm using mainly for boiling beans tripe trotters, but I don't cook my food, I have not gone so far as yet, but always try half of recipe, mainly Curry if you add too much water your food drowns, I only found the chicken ok to use, tell pranash to buy you a slow cooker it's nice but takes 6 hours to cook stuff but that taste is better then pressure, the mug dhall is perfect in pressure cooker as well all beans, proud of you that you have the ability to try new upmarket stuff, there's alot you can do, by saving time and electricity bills,

    Congrats on your new addition to your cooking. You are going to love the the efficiency of cooking all those dry food that takes forever to cook on stovetop.
    Experiment on cooking times also using the manual pressure setting and allow to depressure for couple of minutes before releasing pressure manually.
    I have an Instant Pot and it has been the best thing I purchased.
    I had to get used to releasing pressure as well. I found using a wooden spoon worked well to turn the pressure valve on the lid.

      Hi Margi. I just had a look at my pressure cooker and I think I get what you are saying. The label I think was an after thought. So the engraved drawing showing the steam releasing I think is meant to indicate that the switch is the vent switch. Then I think someone realised they needed to show the open and closed position for the vent and the sticker showing sealed and exhaust was added afterwards to show which position was which. At the start of cooking you will need to have the vent in the sealed position.
